Troubled times for PS3 and PSP: Sony cuts earnings forecast by 57%

Sony Slashes 2008 Fiscal Forecast by 57 Percent - Image 1Sony pulled down its earnings forecasts for the fiscal year of 2009 by 57%.

If that sentence didn't catch your attention, how about this: Sony's in deep doodoo, which does not stand well with the future of the PlayStation 3 and the PSP.

Pachter might think that the video game industry won't be affected much by the recession, but he probably forgot to consider that not all of the titans of the industry have their investments in gaming.

Aside from the PS3 and PSP, Sony's empire also includes digital cams, LCD TVs, and other electronics. Because of troubled times in the economy, it's not surprising people aren't interested in these things as much.

Sony's previous earning estimate was JPÂ¥ 470 billion, but the cut brought it down to JPÂ¥ 200 billion. One analyst believes that Sony's earnings per share could drop as much as 90%, and that a more realistic number for their earnings should be JPÂ¥ 50 billion. I never liked overly pessimistic analysts.

Anyway what does this all mean? It means we'll likely see Sony tighten its belt soon, and we'll see the effects soon enough.

» i hope you stay

what other company do i have to buy stuff from if you leave??

***** samsung, LG, panasonic nad especially Phillips!!

well, samsung i could go with if it actually happened, but i always prefered SONY-products.

by ineedfiles - 2008-10-23 06:43
» tjat what they get

F*ck sony. those *$$holes are always trying to get somebody to buy $*it they don't need. do i NEED a blueray? nope. do i need a memory stick pro duo? not really. but if you buy sony stuff, then all of a sudden you NEED all this extra stuff. minidisk? nope.

sony actually stole the idea of the walkman from a german guy.

SONY CAN KISS MY ENTIRE @$$.

AND thats what they get for trying to MAKE people buy a blueray player.

by martin447 - 2008-10-23 06:45
» lol, btw

by "you" i mean SONY, i just wanted it to sound a bit dramatic (though someones gonna flame me saying, "THAT WASN'T FUNNY/DRAMATIC YOU MORON/*****, something like that,, *sigh* LOL)

and you probalby noticed i wrote "nad" somewhere, well, thats was a mistake, i meant to type "AND" :)

by StingBlah - 2008-10-23 06:51
» okay...

THAT WASN'T FUNNY/DRAMATIC YOU MORON!!!

lol jk. Yea i ALWAYS buy my stuff from sony. In my house the TVs, home theatre audio system, blu-ray player, CD player--EVERYTHING is sony (except the camera--cannon wins that one)! And, of course, the ps3 and psp. :)

One Sony TV is over 10 years old--works PERFECTly. The CD player is 7 years old--also works great.

Sure, some may say sony overprices, but here's what i think: you get what you pay for.

by martin447 - 2008-10-23 06:54
» what?? wow :)

you DO know that companies have to try and sell their product right?

and EVERY company is trying to give to sell it to everyone, also to the ones not in need of whatever product being talked about...

and yeah, you DO need a blu-ray player, not now of course, but if blu-ray continue to succeed, then DVD will be removed, and you'll be movie-less! so theoraticly yes, in order to be up to date, you need a blu-ray player :)

and memory stick dou is a SONY product, and is used with other SONY product, such as phones and PSP, and by making their own portable, digital storage-media device they earn more money on each sold unit (duh! :))

well if people buy it that is :)

minidisk by the way was great, but like betamax, it lost the fight, sadly.

are you a MS-fan? becourse i can't see the purpose of this anger, it's how the world works, sadly, and every company does it even microsoft (they're even worse in MY oppinion)

ohh, and you can't actually say walkman was a stolen idea, companies has to get inspiration!

by StingBlah - 2008-10-23 06:55
» wtf?

wow ur ignorant. You dont technically NEED anything except food and shelter--if you want to live in the stone ages that is...

Do you need a blu-ray player? Yes, if you want to watch incredibly hi-def content to make the most of you HDTV. If not, go back to 2004--or just stop whining!

Sony doesnt MAKE you buy any ***** you dont need, you buy them yourself cuz you see that its an amazing piece of tech.

by martin447 - 2008-10-23 07:03
» continueation :)

companies (such as SONY, Samsung, MicroSoft etc.) has to get ideas from somewhere..

just to give an example on why your so called walkman-idea-theft isn't a theft; if I came up with a great idea for something, then EVERY company could take all the credit and say that they made it, BECOURSE I DIDN'T COPYRIGHT IT!!! (LOL, not actually yelling), so if an idea is floating in the air, all company working with products of that type will try to be the 1st ones to copyright and utilize/(ab)use it!

so you see, in reality (i hate reality) you should hate the world :)

don't worry though i wasn't flamming as im way too nice to do so :) (or so people believe)

anyway have a nice day, full with anger becourse i got you down from your throne of "hatred agianst SONY" (SONY IS written in all capitals!)

please don't flame me though, that takes away a good nights sleep, since i thinking aboput what to answer constantly :)

in other words "im exposed to burdens"

by martin447 - 2008-10-23 07:10
» not fair STINGBLAH

LOL, here i wrote two huge messages (using my PS3, though with USB-keyboard) just to explain what YOU wrote in 6 lines :)

it's just me i guess :( (which is of course a bad thing)

by fearlubu - 2008-10-23 07:11
» ohhh also

our douchebag friend ineedfiles over here states that sony is making us buy what we need...

huh, anyways, MS makes u buy hella ISH for the 360, knowing that he is a xbot..

just throwing that it, sorry for the language, but he is a douchebag

by Cactuar Knight - 2008-10-23 07:34
» ?

err...what?

I'm sorry I couldnt understand 1 thing from your comment..

Things look bad for Sony, I cant believe they lowered their earning forecast - are things that bad for the PS3 and PSP at the moment?

I thought the PSP 3000 sold 14,000+ pieces in 4 days, wouldnt that mean the opposite of loss?

Hope Sony doesnt suffer too much from this, and redeem themselves after this slump.

PSP and PS3 pwn.

by fearlubu - 2008-10-23 07:46
» ok.....

alright... ineedfiles, the 4th post said that sony makes us buy a crap load of things that we dont need, and to F them.

I merely responded that the 360 makes you buy quite a few things in order do stuff for one example: the little internet cord thing....amongst other things

and taht was all i was saying

But SONY does need to step it up

"Hope Sony doesnt suffer too much from this, and redeem themselves after this slump.

PSP and PS3 pwn"

indeed

by Hekynn - 2008-10-23 07:55
» hmm

They need a Pirce cut on the PS3 they really do need one just chop off a $150 and make it $250 then it should be selling like crazy :)

by GTO_VR4 - 2008-10-23 08:17
» I know how to fix this problem

Get all the japanese developers back from nintendo (talking about the DS) and get them back to creating games for Sony.

First person shooters can only be so much fun.

by 73N5H1 - 2008-10-23 08:17
» ...

wow, you talk too much...

by fortune99999 - 2008-10-23 08:35
» Well..

they still made a hefty profit.. the thing is, is that they are losing money on each ps3 they sell but psp is doing fine except for software..

by Miclowgunman - 2008-10-23 09:54
» hopes!

sad days!

For Microsoft, the loss of money is pocket change. And for nintendo, they are only in the video game buisness (but owning a Nintendo brand TV would be pretty funny). Because sony has it's hands spread out all over the Tech market, a little drop in every market makes one big one for them. Hopefully we won't see a huge drop in video games, though. Because of how well it is doing despite the resession.

by ShadeyProphet - 2008-10-23 10:16
» i normally don't rant. but

who was the dumb ***** that thinks this is "just" sonys problem!?

why point fingers and make it seem like this is "just" a sony problem?

to tarnish the ps3/psp? anyone with an iq above 60 could see this problem will effect every console developer equally.

but no.. they have to take this story and twist it, then wipe there asses with it, to make it somehow seem like sony is the only company this economic crisis will effect!

WTF! i call 360 fanboy *****up, on this entire article!!!!

I had some major problems with old Sony hardware. Our PS1 broke, so did the minidisc player (R91, or some model). Our Sony speakers went kaput.

But they seem better now. We just got some giant Bravia TV and the picture (even though we don't have a HD source) is stunning. But PAL resolution is 576. Also got some Sony HDD/DVD player and upscaler that is a fantastic piece of kit.

Studio computers are Apple, hifi and speakers are B+O and the rest also isn't sony. but they do make a spiffing TV.

Shame that my first PSP was loaded with so many dead pixels and it bricked itself (wasn't even modded).

I completely agree, to a degree.

Some hardware is pioneering and useful (though not for me), like BluRay. But some is absolute needless. Memory Sticks are such a pointless product, when you have SD cards that are double the capacity and half the price then why do we need MS?! Especially since SD cards support DRM too! Ridiculous.

And Minidisc was good at the time. The quality of a CD player but size and versatility of a cassette player, plus the ability to record in full quality... in the late 90's that was incredible tech. I only replaced my last minidisc player when the iPod 3G came out.

No, you see the thing is the Xbox comes with the bare minimal needed to do what a games console is supposed to do - play games. It's why you can buy a 360 for £130 whilst the PS3 is £300. Plus... Doesn't the PS3 lack a HD lead in the box? And if you wanted to play PS2 games you had to purchase some extras for the memory card?

Interestingly a 360 Pro+wifi dongle is still cheaper than a PS3. And costs less to run.

BTW I'm not faulting either system. Love them both. I'm just saying how it is.

by Setan - 2008-10-23 11:18
» Exactly!

This man is exactly right.

by 93pauott - 2008-10-23 11:33
» @ "raggedjimmi" or whatever

in order to play ps2 games in your ps3 you have to do this:

1) put in the ps2 game.

2) play.

i dont know what "extras" you have to buy for the memory card, as the ps3 easily emulates ps2 memory card slots, by creating virtual ones.

by jobei - 2008-10-23 12:18
» Sony Sony Sony lol

I guess this is goodbye old friend lol it was nice knowing you lmao.

by lavino - 2008-10-23 12:28

by truk - 2008-10-23 14:34
» recession duh

enough said.

by papajag - 2008-10-23 16:14
» EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

If Sony leaves the gaming business because of this then many game developers will go down with them because as everyone should already know making a next generation game costs money. The reason why many games are becoming multiplatform is because of $$$ needed to develop. Of course the future will probably be PC gaming. Many Dev Companies will probably merge with each other. Think about how long it takes to make games and with Devs merging games might take longer.

by teh not so 1337 g@m3r - 2008-10-23 17:10
» @93pauott -

Moron sony cut PS2 compatibility in the 40GB and new 80GB.

by Xis - 2008-10-23 17:49
» If they prove again success in years to come

I'm considering naming my daugher Sony or her middle name I love it either Sony or Samsung Sony's little sister even though most of their ***** is made form samsung like mem sticks and such but anyway get a hold on things SOny we need you to get it together!!!

by houaruto - 2008-10-23 18:30
» This article is very VAGUE

SONY IS A HUGE CORPORATION AND MAKES LOTS OF STUFF LIKE 3M..............LAST TIME I CHECK THE PS3 WAS ABOVE FORCAST BY NOT MUCH BUT 1%.................WHILE THE PSP BRIGHT JUST HAD A 700% INCREASE IN SALES AND EVEN BEFORE THAT IT WAS THE HARDWARE DOMINATING THE TOP SPOT IN JAPAN FOR MANY MONTHS..............I BELIEVE THE GAMING AND THE OTHER HUNDREDS OF STUFF THEY SELL ARE IN SEPARATE BUDGETS...........BECAUSE OF THE RECESSION THE OTHER SONY STUFF WILL SLOW DOWN IN PRODUCTION ...................BUT ONE THING IS FOR SURE THE RECESSION AND THE XBOX 360 PRICE CUT DIDN'T AFFECT THE PS3 SALES AT ALL................JUST A FEW DAYS AGO THERE WAS AN ARTICLE BOUT THAT.................SO GAMING WISE SONY IS ON TOP OF THEIR GAME WITH DOZENS OF TITLES FROM TOKOYO GAME SHOW SPEAR HEADING THE COMPETITION.............INCLUDING LITTLE BIG PLANET THAT EVERYONE WENT APES ABOUT AND KNOCK DOWN SITES LEFT AND RIGHT FOR THE BETA..............THERE'S NOTHING TO FEAR

by dazmo - 2008-10-23 22:20
» Dont worry!
