Tomb Raider

Last week we brought you news of a canceled Tomb Raider game previously under development at Core Design. The game was rumored to be an updated compilation of Tomb Raider's 1&2 completely redone with a new proprietary engine made by Core Design specifically for the PSP, rumor also has it the game was to be titled Tomb Raider: Anniversary Edition.

Today Core Design posted a message on their official homepage clarifying things, the message reads thus:

"Following speculation on the internet, we would like to offer the following clarification.

The video of Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition that appeared on certain sites was an unauthorised release of an internal presentation of a game that was being developed by Core Design until very recently. It was running on PSP and used a Core-developed engine. However, following a recent review this project has been officially cancelled by SCi.

Core is alive and well and working on some great new projects, and we are still planning to announce some exciting news very soon!"

Dang, shoot, poop and darn! That game looked good! Hopefully we'll be hearing more from Core on just what they're up to (thev're piqued our interest). Until then I guess we'll just have to snuggle our teddy bears close at night and hold on to what would have been.

Comment titles are superfluous

Maybe they're working on an original title for the PSP instead of a remake. I'm all for that.

Shucks

Too bad... I would have bought it. SCi, reconsider. The first two TR were the best, and by utilizing the PSP, many new demographics and audiences will be able to tap into the goodness that once was.

congratulations, core... you stupid idiots.

"Core is alive and well..." - who gives a crap, id rather have tr anniversary over core's existance any day... sci stopped the game most likely due to core's involvement... every decision they make turns into complete rubbish these days (especially in terms of the tr games), which is why the tr franchise was stripped from them, and given to crystal dynamics... sci knows that core will screw this up (questionable as to if they'll screw it up WORSE than the tr legends port got messed up, though...) so yeah... sucks that this game was cancelled, but lets all know that it was obviously all cores fault, and not sci, for their decision to save their franchise/characters from these idiots.

Core...

Firstly, these "idiots" created the Tomb Raider-franchise in the first place. Secondly, these games are already made and known to be good, they are just updating the gfx-engine (and probably adding bits here and there). This is SCi all the way, just thinking income. They probably figure (almost) nobody's gonna by it as these games are already out on all platforms under the sky, as stand-alone and various compilations... Just look at the video, how "messed up" do you think that game looks? Looks bloody brilliant to me...

PS1 Emulator

Hasn't this been cancelled because they can just release the originals on the PS1 emulator later in the year?
by - 2006-06-16 03:15:16
dont back them up.

Firstly, these "idiots" created the Tomb Raider-franchise in the first place. true, im not taking away that the first game was incredibly good. but EVERY tr game since then by them has grown steadily WORSE. all the GOOD creative elements within core that worked on the tr franchise have long since gone, leaving only the people who are ill equipt to handle the tomb raider games... unless your going to tell me angel of darkness was a classic... ___________ -- Secondly, these games are already made and known to be good, they are just updating the gfx-engine (and probably adding bits here and there). known to be good? what the hell are you on about... besides the original, they all stunk (tr2 was passable, but not a great game...) - the tr franchise only became good again when it was taken AWAY from core. ___________ -- This is SCi all the way, just thinking income. They probably figure (almost) nobody's gonna by it as these games are already out on all platforms under the sky, as stand-alone and various compilations... when companies think 'income', their general move is to flog a franchise for all its worth, releasing whatever they can... if money was their only goal, they'd release it. most likely they got cold feet because of core's current track record with tr games, and decided that after the brilliant come back of tr legends, they didnt want core to UNDO ALL THAT EFFORT. ___________ -- Just look at the video, how "messed up" do you think that game looks? Looks bloody brilliant to me... you can NEVER tell how a game is going to be from a developer produced demo! a demo is created to wow people, not give them an accurate idea of how the game will be, you should know that by now. start playing some games (especially tomb raider games) before you come in and try to back up the company that almost managed to completely destroy the tomb raider franchise. The core that is today, is NOT the creative force that gave us the original game. They are ill equiped to make this psp game. hopefully sci will shop around for another developer and give it to them, or even hand it over to crystal dynamics, unless the original game story is somehow tied up with core...

^ Let's be fair

Core Design weren't exactly given the freedom and the time to innvoate and improve the TR games were they? After TR1 was a massive success Eidos basically insisted on annual updates to the franchise which basically gave Core enough time to make some new levels each year. Lara's creator Toby Gard left because he was frustrated with the way Eidos were marketing the character. When Core were finally given the chance to make a new Tomb Raider engine for the next generation it took them a long time. And they weren't even allowed to finish it, Eidos basically rushed it to market because they needed to make their 1st quarter financials look good because they don't have any other decent franchises. When Angel Of Darkness flopped it was Core who got blamed and the game was given to a different dev house. Just shows you how much control Core ever really had over the franchise (i.e. none). While TR:Legend was excellent, it wasn't exactly long and it did basically steal Prince of Persia's design didn't it? It's not Core's fault they lost TR, it's Eidos'.

I bet

There is avery good chance they cancelled it ONLY because it failed to live up to the quality of LEGEND. And if that is the case then why bother release an inferior version of Tomb Raider after Legend just breathed life back into the franchise. There is a good chance that "Anniversary Edition" will still see the light of day with the Legend engine and not produced by CORE.

So why is this page saying it is NOT cancelled?

http://psp.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=3109 Tomb Raider 10th Anniversary Confirmed June 16, 2006 by: Matt Furtado Eidos has announced '10th Anniversary Edition' of Tomb Raider for the PSP. First details inside. Eidos confirmed today that they are developing a special 10th Anniversary Edition of Tomb Raider. The new game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, who recently launched Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend on Xbox 360, PS2, Xbox, PC and PSP, with versions on Nintendo DS, GBA and GameCube later in 2006. "10th Anniversary Edition of Tomb Raider, is a one-off title to celebrate both Lara and Tomb Raider, it will appeal not only to the loyal fans of the Tomb Raider series but will also attract a totally new audience." Said Larry Sparks, Head of Brands Management at Eidos. Tomb Raider originally launched in 1996 and is still one of the best selling videogame franchises of all time, with over 30 million copies sold. The special 10th Anniversary Edition of Tomb Raider will be available on PlayStation 2, PSP and PC.
