Time Magazine names their pick for top 10 games for '06

#1It may look like the antithesis of what a Video game of the Year recipient should be. The graphics, as Time Magazine describes it, looks like Colecovision, and yet Wii Sports bagged the title.

Yep, that's right. Time Magazine has awarded the top Video Game award of 2006 to Nintendo's Wii Sports for the Wii. According to Time, what's so good about this mini-sports anthology is that it does bring you right into the game, making it more fun. The power of the motion-sensing Wiimote makes it all the more enticing.

And it ain't so hard to imagine why. After all, the game does bring sports fun right in your own living room. Well, it does look like Nintendo's innovative marketing strategy did work after all. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that you don't have to pay a cent for the game as well, since it comes free with the console.

Gears of War for the Xbox 360 comes in at second place, while the New Super Mario Bros. checks in at third. To find out the rest of the top 10 winners, head on over to their site by clicking on the Read link below. See if any of your bets made it.

This is the Magazine that Bashed The PS3 as Not-worth It...

With This Choice as Best Game......I,m not surprised...in the End....they Are Not Proffesionals in the Games Department....seems they Prefer [Easy Games] with [Back to Basic] Slogan...Just Like Kids and Elderly

I guess the PS3....as a Multi-Fuctional System with Excellent Hardware....is Simply Above their Standard

I guess since the ps3 has below average framerates that makes it not easy, but hard to play...right?

» wow time's up ninty's a$$

First the PS3 bashing and now Wii sports as the best title of the year? LMAO. F*ck, gears of war deserves it over wii sports anyday. Oh and then there's NSMB and LOZ:TP ... which IMO don't deserve to be that high on the latter.

Rockstar Table tennis at 7???? Even before guitar hero 2? WTF!

Man, on second thought, this list is so f|_|cked it can't be fixed. I agree with broken_hero saying that whom ever picked this list was looking for easy to pick up titles that didn't really require thought and was giddy when he/she say some pretty graphics. Again, I think GoW deserves praise but the only commented on was the heat ripple effect.

Your a total zombie Broken. Have you even played Wii Sports or Gears Of War or the New Super Mario Bros.?

No, you just assume they are trash.

» *ahem**fanboy Alert*

Why can you fanboys never accept that Nintendo and Microsoft made better games than Sony. Hats off to Sony, they have started making new franchises instead of ten year old sequels, but you have to accept they didnt win this time round. So Grow up!!!

Yeh they got Resistance in there but...

...NO FFXII, OR Okami!

WTF! Those are some of the greatest games ever. Retards.

Ok, I already know ALOT of hardcore gamers will completly thrash Time magazine for that one. I do own a Wii & think Wii sports is great, but lets get serious here. As good as it is, it holds nothing to games like Gears of War, Oblivion, GRAW, & thats just a few. I can, as many others can, name a huge list that will make Wii Sports not even be ranked in the top 10. That was a terrible selection & on top of that, who the hell reads Time magazine for games anyways. All those higher class buisness readers will end up saying "WTF is a Wii".

by DiabloTerrorGF - 2007-01-01 03:04

I was shocked when Okami didn't make that list.

So where would you put Gears on that list?

Wii Sports got the number one spot for innovation, for getting people out of their seats jumping around and having fun.

» overhype ps3

No one gives a ***** about $ony they suck and blu-ray sucks more. I'll take hd-dvd anyday over blu-ray

by Vietone - 2007-01-01 05:20
» Too bad

Because the way that its going now, having blue-ray in the PS3 has drastically increased the sales of blue-ray and they have almost reached the amount that HD DVD has sold so far.

HD DVD has alot less players in households now compared to Blue-ray. With the PS3, its now over 1 Million, and its highly doubtful HD DVD has reach 1 million yet, also the HD DVD addon was a poor seller.

Ok, although wii sports may be fun, how is this great? If I wanted to play Basketball or Football and actually "Feel" the game I'd get out there and actually play the damn game. Now, on the other hand, I can't get outside and just shoot random people like you can in Gears of War or Resistance, right?

» Good Lord.

For God's sake, I hope you were trying to be ironic.

Nintendo's been making sequels for most of it's life. Y'know, Pokemon? All those Mario games? Metroid?

And to be fair, if you knew what you were talking about, Sony hardly ever actually -makes- the games. The only one recently I can think of is God of War.

But if what you meant by that horrid post was "people don't make good games for Sony systems", well, you must've been living in Nintendo World for the past 6 years. I suppose the 7 or so MGS games, 3 Katamaris, 2 Guitar Heroes, 4 Gran Turismos, 4 Ratchets, 5 Jak + Daxters, etc. just didn't count, right?

Holy *****, are you serious? Final Fantasy?? That game wasn't good 25 versions ago, that is the most pointless waste of time ever created by SE. If you ever decide you've the balls to say any FF game is better then Gears, I swear I will rip them off your tiny crotch and shove them down your jizz filled throat

by Deranged Hippo Master - 2007-01-01 07:25
» Blue Ray

Wow Vietone, those were some really well informed statistics you have there, you stats on sales of the HD DVD player are really specific. Seriously though, mocking aside, please know what your talking about before you make stupid comments again.

"It's better to be thought an idiot then open your mouth and remove all doubt"

by Romp - 2007-01-01 07:48
» Blue Ray...so what?

Sony had better hope that Blue Ray wins the format war. If they lose (like Mini-Disc, Betmax, etc) alot of people with PS3s will be peeved. Of course those with XBOXs didn't have to pay for BlueRay player they didn't need. If Blue Ray does win, guess what will come out? "Blue Ray" for XBOX 360.

We will see which one will win. With either one, XBOX is fine. The PS3 better hope they win.

» games from Sony:

Gran Turismo

Ratchet and Clank

Jak and Daxter

Sly Cooper

Ico

Shadow of the Colossus

Ape Escape 1 and 3

God of War

Primal

Siren

The Mark of Kri

Rise of the Kasai

Warhawk.

those are just the few off of the top of my head (and that i happen to own).

let's see, what games are made from Microsoft studios?

Halo

Fable

*insert crickets*

Games from Nintendo?

Mario

Metroid

Zelda

Nintendogs

Pikmin

Animal Crossing

i'm not even going to include the exclusive 3rd party games for the PS1 and PS2, as that would just be unfair, but you get the point.

Sony's first and second party development studios are all very talented and capable, and have brought Playstation owners quite a bit of quality entertainment these past 11 years (and in particular, the past 6, as with the PS2, Sony ramped up it's 1st and 2nd party studios significantly).

how can you say they didn't "win this round," when their new console has only been out a month and a half?

in about 2 to 3 years, we'll have a clearer picture of who's really leading, not 1 and half months after the competition shows up. sheesh, fangdevil.

by Figboy - 2007-01-01 08:54
» hmm

we have a PS3 and 360, and our buddy repeatedly brings over his Wii (no pun intended), to have us play it in a vain attempt to make us think it's worth the money.

having played the three killer titles on each platform (Resistance for PS3, Gears of War for 360, and Zelda for Wii), i could easily put Resistance on top, followed by Zelda, then Gears of War.

i know, i know, Gears is supposed to be the most amazingly spectactular and sensational game of all time. but i'm sorry, it's just a glorified "Killswitch."

if you were to strip away the visuals of Gears of War, you'd have an average 3PS with clunky controls.

i'm not a hater (obviously, since we have the 360), but Gears of War, while good, just isn't living up to the ridiculous hype i've had to endure all last year from 360 fans, based solely on the screenshots that were released throughout the year, as not a single one of them had touched the game until it released in November.

Resistance has a few things going for it, and this is why i'd put it at number one:

1.) Wii Sports sucks. i'm sorry, it does. Bowling and Golf are fun, everything else is pretty lame. also, subtract a few fun points when your friends or family aren't around, because playing it alone is like drinking alone; sad and lame.

2.) Resistance controls like butter. Halo set the bar for excellent controls in an FPS on a console, Resistance raises that bar. The little tweaks Sony made to the PS3 controller help Resistance (and i'm assuming future FPSes) to control just as excellently, if not better, than on the X Box and 360.

3.) Resistance's characters actually look like humans, and not like Rob Leifield drawings, circa 1992. sure, some people like that look, but if i wanted to see bodybuilders, i'd watch World's Strongest Man competitions. everything else visually in Gears looks great (ie, backgrounds), but they should, when there's little to no interactivity with the environment (for the record, Resistance has a lot of destructable and interactive scenery). In short, i love the backgrounds in Gears, but the character models look ridiculous (and sound even moreso). and i can also tell the difference between my enemy and my ally in Resistance (how many times i've shot an ally and got killed by an enemy i thought was an ally in Gears is too many to count).

4.) The weapons in Resistance are great, and a lot of fun to use. from the Bullseye's alt fire (which fires an orb that attaches to a bad guy, and all regular fire travels right to that orb, killing the enemy), to weapons that shoot through walls, grenades that burst into tiny spines, a gun that creates it's own turret that fires in all directions, killing any who get in it's way, Resistance's weapon selection is second to none and trumps Gears' anyday.

5.) Multiplayer; 40 players. online. lag free. enough said about that. just take what you will from the short weapon description i posted before, now imagine 40 actual people duking it out with said weapons, with no slowdown or framerate whatsoever.

5.) The story is great. it's well paced, well acted, and well presented. you actually care about, and are intrigued by what happens to these people, and it's the driving force behind continuing forward. the game is hard to put down, as you're constantly saying, "just one more level, then i'll quit." Gears has one of the most cliched stories i've ever seen, with characters straight out of an 80's Schwarzenegger movie (i was thinking, "Predator," actually). that would have been cool back when i was 8, but now, it's just silly.

6.) It just keeps getting better. each level of Resistance ratchets up the action and difficulty, and it is always better than the previous level. from storming a town infested with Chimera with your troop, to running down the bastards in your jeep, with your buddy manning the gun, the game never gets tiring or repetitive. Gears, while having a nice bit of tension (mainly due to the dark, dark shadows cast everywhere), the game kind of plateaus early on, and stays the sam

Hey Figboy! bad news every one of your complaints about Gears of War is either an absolute lie, or something only N00bs complain about. You remind me of someone I know, he pretends like he's an impartial observer of all the consoles, but when it comes down to it he's just a Sony fanboy sitting at home wanking to his Ps3 and crying that Nintendo is kicking Sony's a$$. you'd did do a good job of quoting the user manual to resistance though, so, good job on that. There is no nice way to say this, your wrong. Online, Gears trumps resistance without breaking a sweat. I'm not going to make the stupid mistake of saying that Gears will never ever be topped because of it's perfection. but right now, it is the best game out there. Resistance is good, don't get me wrong. It has solid game play, and almost feels as good as Halo in your hands. ( if only Sony could fix their controllers) but, it's just not THAT good.

Yeah buddy, 1st thing, Metal Gear started on the NES or SNES, I forget, and has been on dozens of other consoles so its not technically a Sony game. 2nd Katamari sucks its just rolling around a big ball, I can do that with my 3 year old nephew, and Guitar Hero...so-so...might as well buy a real guitar.

So what're you're telling me is that Starfox, Kirby, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, SSB, Custom Robo, Baten Kaitos, All the old NES games(Kid Icarus, Earthbound, Ice Climbers...etc, Battalion Wars(Advance Wars), and the dozens of other first-party games that I dont have time to list dont exist right?

by GameX - 2007-01-01 11:59
» Completely Wrong Vietone (as usual)

"Every review site gave FFXII a better score then GoW."

Did you bother to do any research before making that statement?

http://www.gamerankings.com

Final Fantasy XII - Average 93.4 out of 56 review scores.

Gears of War - Average 94.1 out of 113 review scores.

And from a quick look at various websites, a few give FXII a *slightly* higher score, but more give the games either the same score, or Gears of War a slightly higher score.

So to conclude, by your logic, Gears of War is a better shooter than FXII is an RPG.

by AppleSauce-Device - 2007-01-01 13:41
» To GameX

don't worry about it X, arguing with Vietone is like arguing with a gay guy ( and it probably is arguing with a gay guy) sure your right, everyone knows your right, but chances are he's already drugged your drink and is planning on raping you.

In conclusion Gears is so much better then that second rate excuse for a game that some retard KEEPS naming FINAL fantasy, despite the fact that it has the longest (and least impressive) line of crap games ever.

saying FFXII is the best RPG ever is like saying Vietone is the best retard ever, sure he is, but he's still a retard.

» Take a step back...

Time Magazine isn't a gaming magazine. It's not an enthusiast writing these articles.

That said, it makes absolute sense that Wii Sports nabs it. Time Magazine represents more what the average person thinks. And as someone who has a Wii, I can say that Wii Sports has single-handedly won over the 10+ people I've shown it to. The relatives of mine who played it -- adults who never play video games -- now really really want a Wii. These are people who scoff at video games as wastes of time.

I think for this one fact alone, Wii Sports deserves #1 or at least a place in the top 5. While it may have made no impact in your gaming circles, take a step back and look at all of the people who it has affected within just 1 and a half months.

Face it, its done what few games (Guitar Hero and Nintendogs come to mind) have done since Pong and Pac-man... its captured the hearts of the non-gamers and made them actually want to play a video game. I know I've had more fun playing Wii Sports with family and many of my non-gamers friends than I have had with any other game this year.

» Naive....

Humans.....are so Naive

Vietone.....FFXII is a Better Revolution for the Genre...But you Didnt Know How to Defend it Well..

FFXII is a Far superior revolution than GOW....the level of technical Graphical acheivment is Outstanding...Just when we thought that the weak, aged hard to develop for PS2 Has reached its Limitation.....FFXII arrives...to change all that...Incredible Vast Areas...Complete attention to Details Down To NPC,s.....Virtualy [NO Loading-times]....[Character Animations] that Completly Surpasses Any Next-Gen title...And Over 100 Hours of Content...

That which was said Above...is just the Technical Acheivement from a Graphical Standpoint....Which Far Exceeeds what GOW Had Acheived....Unless you are saying that Gow is the Best that the 360 Can do....as long as there is A space for Improvement in the 360...then GOW Cannot technically match FFXII....the Game Exceeded what We thought the PS2 can Acheive....and turned Launch Games into a Joke...GOW was Beutifull....but it that it is thanks to the UE3...[which is an Engine designed for Multi-Platforms] from PC to PS3...meaning it is not designed for the 360...thus it is not a true technical acheivement for the System..

But that is NOT why Final Fantasy is the Greatest RPG genre...and why GOW cannot even rech it..

You must understand that Not everyone likes a game....where you carry a chainsaw...and kill others with Very Weak Story....GOW was simply loved for its graphics...meaning once another superior Graphically game appears...it will be forgetten for the Next game....this is a game that is loved for its graphics...once technology develops and better Games arrive.....GOW will be ignored.....just like how the Original Doom was forgeten....Doom started it all....but no one knows Doom1 now...

FF was Loved for its Story and Involving Emotional character Development....It Has been 10 Years....but no one will Forget Cloud+sephiroth of FFVII...they will remain in the memory of who ever played FFVII...even when FFX and FFXII arrived....people still remebered and Loved FFVII...because there was something More than graphics...There was a story that is Beuty...Imagination...A game Ending that will be remebered and never forgoten...this is a story and stories...unlike Graphics...are always beutifull and never Age...

Gow will be ignored when a better game with better graphics arrives....no one will Forget FFVII

Even now....people are still willing to play FFVII...ten years after the game....because it has a story.....beutiful music...and character development...that cannot be forgotten

This is why...FF...is the most-respected RPG franchise in the world....Not Just for Graphics...But For the Incredible story of FFVII...the Adult-Quotes in FFXII...the Beutifull Music Of FFVIII....this is a game far Beyond Graphics...

My Apologies....But GOW....doesnt stand a chance......FFVII will be played after another 6 years.......GOW will Ignored When GOW2 arrives......just like the original Halo.

If you people Love Graphics so much.....Wait for FFXIII [Versus]...the game aims to reincarnate FFVII:Advent children.....You can forget GOW then...

No, he was just wrong. It's as simple as that. :)

Besides, I think it rather dumb to compare games in different genres and try to prove one game is better than another.

"GOW was simply loved for its graphics"

And you see, you lose all credibility with such comments, because whilst the game IS loved for the graphics, it's clear from the reviews and podcasts from various websites that even when the graphics has worn off, Gears of War is still being enjoyed for the GAMEPLAY, which is what really counts.

by sunny - 2007-01-07 11:19
» GoW is nice but...

this comment probably belongs when the article came out but being and ps3 owner with mabye 4 others at my school, i think its safe to say that resistance and gears are dead even.

1. gears introduced something to games that you could only get in tom clancy games: tactical shooting. sure in halo and even resistance you can use cover, but not as effectively as in gears.

2. the humans in gears are roided and grotesque. someone made a comment about bodybuilders and they couldnt be more correct. i will admit, however, that in resistance, the detail in the humans (such as hair, the ears, and clothing) could have been better, but thats what u pay for in a first-gen game.

3. the texture rendering in gears is unlike anything i have ever seen before. resistance doesnt touch gears in graphics (although in some parts, the blood in gears just looks retarded). speaking of blood, gears made a landmark step into physics, allowing for you to actually take someones head off and destroy their body with a shotgun or chainsaw, which is more than i can say for the blood splatter in resistance.

4. however, the myriad of guns in resistance are untouchable (if youve beat the game once or more and unlocked the splitter and reaper, you will know wat im talking about). the vehicles (such as the stalker) are incredible.

5. i havent beat gears so i have not encountered all of the enemies but i can tell you that no matter how tough they might be, due to the processing power of the ps3, you will never encounter more cunning AI's at once than in resistance. also resistance as a whole is much more interactive. although the buildings you cant enter in gears look gorgeous, i believe that the environment interaction in resistance makes up for it.

6. resistance has 40player servers with no lag on wifi and most of them arent that bad.

i think i had more to say but i forgot so i think (especially) for a first gen game, resistance matches up nicely with gears of war.
