It's no secret that publisher THQ is having some financial troubles, especially with the US$ 192 million loss that they reported last month. It looks like things haven't really picked up yet, too, and now the company is planning to close down one of its studios and turning another two into independent studios.

The one facing a shutdown order is strategy game specialist Big Huge Games. It's just been a bit over a year since THQ acquired Big Huge Games but it's now on the brink of closure - unless a buyer is found, that is. Meanwhile, THQ has also notified staff at Heavy Iron Studios and Incinerator Studios that they will be spun out as independent development companies.

These actions are all part of THQ's plans to achieve its targeted cost reductions of US$ 220 million. The company noted that the decisions are "unfortunate but were necessitated by the difficult economic environment."
