Thompson includes Gawker Media, Kotaku in Florida suit

Jack Thompson - Image 1Hot off the heels of Jack Thompson's request to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to do something about Kotaku, Jack Thompson amended an earlier lawsuit filed against the Florida Bar and the Florida Supreme Court dated March 13th and April 11th respectively. The amendment seeks the inclusion of game blog Kotaku and parent company Gawker Media in the case.

The suit is in relation to an article published by the blog on its site which blasted away at Thompson for commenting on national television that the tragic events at Virginia Tech were related to violent video games.

Thompson also seems to have taken offense in one comment posted by a reader that accused the activist lawyer of using the Virginia Tech tragedy to feed off his cause and run his own agendas.

» Gotta Say

Jack Thompson seriously needs to STFU. You want crude, undeniable inhuman behavior, how about focus on low income areas? Maybe turn your view to improving those in poverty! Perhaps some focus into reforming people leaving our prison system. These individuals need the attention that you so irrefutably send to young adults who enjoy the few minutes of the day they have playing consoles.

Thompson attacks video games, arguing that the violence within them brings violence to the forefront of our minds. It simply isn't true. We are naturally inclined to be violent, look at our evolution. MOST OF US CHOOSE TO BE KIND. It's those of us with psychological problems who cause the worst problems. It's like attacking people in the 60's who took BB Guns and attacked squirrels in the neighborhood. Or singling out kids who put salt on slugs. Get over it, some people are naturally pre-disposed to be cruel, long before a kid could ever pick up a controller and run over Grandma...

Just because someone says something you don't agree with doesn't mean it's time to file a lawsuit. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution...read into it.

» Thompson's Acting Foolish

Thompson just needs to grow up. He's acting foolish and childish. "Oh wow, lookie me I'll sue Square because it's bringing gamers down the wrong path of videogame violence". Well, have news for you buddy SO FREAKIN WHAT?

Square loves the fans and they'll do anything to make the fans happy (be it Final Fantasy sequals, live game concerts y'name it). Both in Japan in the U.S. Same goes with the rest of the other game companies.

This is what's wrong with America. We get all of these Christians in the law/government who think we should run the country by the Bible, regardless of what the constitution says. » what a hypocrit (SP?)

he can go on national TV and call people "jackass and idiot" but heaven forbid some one actually catches him "spinning a situation to benefit his agenda . jack Thompson ... you may think you have a rightious agenda in your own mind ... but there are alot of us gamers who dissagree with the whole video game induced violence .

the person has to be mentally defected to think the result of shotting a person on a game is anywhere near shooting a person in life .....

you want to save a life ? go to compton or some other deprived area , and fight for the people being manipulated every day out of money they cant even afford to pay the cost of living in thier communities ....

I would normally wish harm upon people like you JT ... but in this case , I just hope you have a heart attack ... that way you cannot be a martyr

by Ludikhris - 2007-04-25 14:05
» Odd

First it's odd that QJ is letting us comment on JT. Normally they just let us digg the articles.

None the less, after reading what Jack Thompson is for over the last few months i've come to the conclusion that MOST of his ideas seem reasonable.

- Make it illegal to sell violent games to minors

This is kind of common sense seeing as how rated 'R' movies follow much of the same rules. But here is where he goes wrong.

Something inside this individual has gone wrong. It's kind of like someone with mental illness where rationality and logic are not present. His goals on the surface seem fine but his methods seem almost satirical. It's as if he just wants to sue everyone for everything knowing they won't fight back. The problem is companies and people are beginning to stand up and JT is now getting himself in trouble. Based on JT's logic it would be fine to hunt deer with a rocket launcher, or possibly butter bread with a samurai sword.

He is even going so far as to make lies about real world events. I personally watched JT on television emphasize repeatedly that Cho (VT shooter) was addicted to training on the game counter strike. Unfortunately this is not completely true. What is true is Cho was observed playing counter strike a few times in high school and never confirmed to play in College.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/wapo-writer-talks-vt-shooter-counter-strike-connection-removal/

This is where JT butters his bread with a samurai sword. Just because Cho was seen playing a game a few times, the game is to blame. Thats like saying I saw a couple horror movies and it made me desensitized enough to go on a killing spree. All the studies that are valid, ALL OF THEM, have shown that violence in media only works as a desensitizing and training tool when used repeatedly in mass quantities AND you must be predisposed to the behavior. The evidence in Cho's case does not show he was grossly addicted to CounterStrike as JT repeated frequently in his interview.

JT you have a valid point, but you have ruined it with your lies.

Calling him an idiot is accurate seeing as how he is foolish to lie to the public and assume people will never see it.

Don't just generalize us into one big group. I disagree with most of what Jack Thompson has said. He gives a lot of us a bad name. You can't blame violence on media, we were killing long before it existed. Maybe he should go read his Bible and read about Cain and Abel...

Why aren't we surprised how quickly Jack Thompson leeched on to this sad story. Here is a question... how many people play counter strike on the xbox published by microsoft?????? Ok.. I see 3 hands.... now how many people play it on the pc (published by Valve)....

Now why did JT attack MS instead of Valve..... oh thats right.. MS has more money.. and possibly a larger settlement for him......

He's not being to smart about what he's doing. Filing suite, settling out of court by way of dropping charges. Must of been dropped on his head repeatedly as a baby. Fell down the stupid tree hitting every retarded branch on the way down. In compton they have a name for his kind... GOLD DIGGIN PIGEON HEAD! Cuddo's to the guy that said "his own family would probably leave him if they weren't afrade to lose every thing in the devorce." Money lusting, lieing, untrustworthy, A-tipical lawyer but with a twist, his takes it alot further than anybody with half a brain would do and thats precisely why people will soon stop listening to his nonsensical rantings.

I really LOATH this guy and am really starting to have a craving to see him splashed across TV again just so he further permeates the truth about him self in the public eye.

It's all about the "wording" you'll notice and the freedom of speech that protects us all but you can't be dumb about your speech. I word my self very boldly yet make sure I'm not suggesting to much out of the scope of legal rights.

» well we could thank him.....

We could look at the bright side of this. Weather we are Xbox fanboys PS3 fanboys or Nintendo fanboys we can all agree on one thing Jackass Thompson is a complete waste of air and should not have a liscense to practice law, for the plan and simple fact that he will use any tradgedy to get his own personal agenda across. I think SNAKE best describes him.

Well, the 1st Amendment isn't the get-away-with-saying-whatever-I-want free pass everyone thinks it is (standing on a street corner screaming A-hole at the top of your lungs WILL get you arrested after a while), but even so there is nothing JT can do about it since the poster didn't attack him personally.

"Thompson also seems to have taken offense in one comment posted by a reader that accused the activist lawyer of using the Virginia Tech tragedy to feed off his cause and run his own agendas." Because it's too close to the truth, Jack?

by Neuromancer - 2007-04-25 22:08
» Letting us talk about Thompson

It's not odd, it's great. Why should anyone have to fear bagging on Thompson? He is a public figure. If we can speak publically on Keanu Reeves' crack being a dirty jet black in Matrix 3, or on Kate Moss having a cocaine photo-op, then we can talk about Thompson lol.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-04-25 23:37
» Petition the bar association to take away his license because he's the public nusiance!

The thing Jackass Tohmpson likes to do (at least in Flordia) is ban certan videogames by declaring violent videogames a public nusiance. A product that nobody is forced to view or buy and that people enjoy (hence why people pay money for it) is a public nusiance? How many states paid hundreds of thousands of dollars enacting laws that are later deemed unconstitutiona l?

It is obvious what his motivations are after appearing on fox news and blaming videogames for the Virginia Tech shooting WHEN NOTHING WAS KNOWN ABOUT THE SHOOTER. This was further driven home when the shooter had no videogames at all!

Jack Tohmpson IS the biggest public nusiance since that law was enacted and his right to practice law needs to be taken away!

Now when he has sharp criticism (which is totally deserved) he calls people names and sues them. How can any judge not immediately throw his "lawsuits" out the door? They aren't even real lawsuits, more like "I'm a big baby and these people are being mean to me." What's with suing a web site that hosts forums anyway?

I think he's just pissed he gets so much hate mail and people send his wife sex aids. I heard that and laughed my ass off! That poor woman.... The guy must have the smallest d*ck on the planet.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-04-25 23:51
» .

More and more news organizations and web sites are coming out about how he exploits violent tragedies for his own profit. It's ruining his plan so it's a desperate last ditch plan to stop the criticism. When he goes down as a disgrace, it will be an ugly affair with lawsuits everywhere.

He appeared on fox news (not that it's a real news program) immediately after the Virginia Tech tragedy blaming his self labeled "murder simulators" to set the stage for lawsuits from the victims, plain and simple. Jack, you truly are a worthless peice of sh*t, and I will enjoy seing you go down as the most desperate ambulance chaser "lawyer" ever. I really think you look forward to the next violent act performed by some psychopath to exploit your cash cow.

Jack, it's time to realise, your stereotyping video games.

Violence have already existed in mankind for years, most notably in the form of war. Remember Nanking Massacre? No video games existed at those times, yet tthis event is way bigger than the VT shooting. But probably the Jack is so ignorant that he doesn't know anything about the other side of the world. Then what about Adolf Hilter? Leader of the Nazi Party. No video games can possibly exist, yet he is racial and violent.

Games nor Guns don't create violence, only man's heart do.

» Who are the parents

Jack wants to blame the gaming industry for the perils that have fallen upon society. I blame lazy parents that park their kids in front of a playstation or TV for hours upon hours because they don't want to be bothered. I grew up playing games and haven't killed anyone yet, you know why? Because my parents taught me that it was just a game. When i hit the reset button the person on the game lives again. Real life has no such buttons.
