The Greenpeace Greener Electronics Ranking revisited |
Ó
These days, nurturing the environment is the way to go. In line with that Greenpeace has released the latest results of the Greener Electronics Ranking. This scale was apparently designed to hold companies accountable for their action (or inaction) with regard to the environment. The results? The rankings have changed somewhat since the last time.
Greenpeace bases its company ranking on the policies and practices of these companies with regard to toxic chemicals and takeback. According to Greenpeace, this is how the following companies have fared on the latest report:
- Samsung and Toshiba both occupy the top spot at 7.7/10 due to good policies on toxic chemicals, e-waste and recycling.
- Nokia is at 7.3. Greenpeace testers reportedly ran into problems with the company's recycling system in India and Russia.
- Microsoft has improved its score to 4.7 due to an "improved timeline for toxic chemicals elimination."
- Nintendo remains at the bottom of the list with 0.3. It's reportedly the only company without known policies on toxic elimination or recycling, unlike the others.
- Apple steadily continues to improve, with its MacBook Air containing less toxic chemicals. It's current rank is 6.7.
- Sony scored a 7.3, but Greenpeace has admitted that it has yet to "introduce any green innovation on the PlayStation."
- Motorola stands at 6.3 as its recycling service has reportedly improved.

Wow Nintendo just doesn't care about the environment.
screw the environment. i want faster inefficient chips NOW.
i'm tired of the all the low wattage sub par performing crap thats being release in all departments last year (gpu, cpu).
Wow, well if you had any common sense you'd know that these scores are collated from discussions with the companies. Nintendo's score is so low because they don't openly discuss their envionmental issues and have continuously refused to meet with Greenpeace.
Now their number could still be anywhere from 0-10, but going off their whole card packaging for the Wii and DS here, user replacable batteries, small packaging and low powered gaming systems they would likely score very high.
You see some people might think you're joking. But when you take into account that the chips are getting much faster and effecient and aren't losing any speed over it. Wait I shouldn't have posted and let some people shoot a barrage of insults shot at you!
Why would Nintendo refuse to give information to Greenpeace? Are they hiding something?
I don't want to defend Mister No Common Sense (Everybody should know by now that he's a stupid Nintendo-basher), but there's a reason why Nintendo just don't give out information about their environment policies. The first thing what I noticed for example is, that the Wiimotes still use normal batteries. Rechargeable batteries would be much better and better for the environment.
Microsoft's wireless controllers can use regular batteries as well, yet they scored much higher than Nintendo.
the wii motes dont use any official rechargables so no that still doesnt count Mister no sense Nintendo doesnt want to let them know there real scores but nintendo has always been fairly private and unless they are doing something terribly wrong (which i really hope not i like nintendo alot) its theyre own business.
The batteries they use has a very small effect if at all on their score. It is mainly how they manufacture their products and the waste produced in doing so.
They arent losing speed, but they could have performed better by consuming more resources.
someone was gonna catch on to that. It's not the damage the consoles cause in the hands of the consumer GP rates it's the production issues. In this day and age this information should be public and companies who oppose releasing their information are incriminating themselves in their silence.
What nintendos real score would be and yeah your right but i wonder why they havent released official info. what ever the real score would be it would obviously be higher than this and the wii is a small system so i doubt it takes alot of waste to make them (compared to the other two of course)
dammit qj this has nothing to do with the systems this is the companys good job!!! the one about the systems is clash of the consoles
http://www.greenpeace.org/international/clashoftheconsoles/sony
if the link gets removed google it worth a read PS3 is THE greenest console
I\'m not saying QJ bloggers don\'t screw up once in awhile but the linked article is the most recent news on the Greenpeace site (March 18th is old? huh?) and QJ listed this as off-topic. I feel like removing your link just to give you something valid to whine about.
This is the first incidence of a QJ staff member actually retaliating to a flame.
Good Job. I cannot understand how you guys have kept your patience for so long!
thanks for \"defending\" the post, dude. but unless there's just a bug on our comments ID section, you really should stop using 'QJ. NET staff' -- unless of course you actually DO join us. :)
I used my publisher login so get informed before you accuse me of something. If you don't believe then check the comments from the back end and you'll notice the edit I made is real.
I might not work out of the office but that doesn\'t mean I\'m not part of QJ. I guess you don\'t pay much attention to who administers the forums. lol
NeilR IS QJ.net staff. He's one of our forum administrators (as well as myself). It is not a bug in the system. It'll be nice if you visit the forums more often to acknowledge who helps run this place.
NeilR, Abe Froeman, Mysticales (all usernames on the forums) are Administrators of the Forums along with myself. If you see anyone with the following usernames post with QJ.net Staff it is not a bug (I believe some of our moderators also have access).
Now that is cleared up, glad to see Wii is so far behind - I think Greenpeace has something against the Nintendo company since that is an extremely low rating even after they have changed since the first Greenpeace announcement.
Frankly, I am sick and tired of this alarmist, jump on the bandwagon, tree-hugging crap. Greenpeace and Al Gore are a bunch of blowhards.
We all care about the environment, but when is the last time discarded waste sludge from Wii or PS3 production caused the death of some little old lady washing her clothes on the edge of the river. The most danger a console can do these days is crack someone's skull if they toss it out the window.
I am not about destroying the environment, but frankly, I don't see Global warming as man made anymore than I see us as responsible for volcanos, sunrises or rain. The cycles the plant goes through over millions of years are natural... as most of the Al Gore and Greenpeace freaks seem to forget... most of our land was covered with ice at one point, so what happened to it all? Did the caveman drive his car around too much and pollute the air?
These ratings are a bunch of crap and I can not even believe you all are giving it so much attention. Greenpeace needs to get a life.
were a bunch of fanboys
this proves it "Now that is cleared up, glad to see Wii is so far behind"
qj home of the brainless monkeys
You can't equate what one person states or does to any one group of people. That kind of mentality is what racism and ignorance is based on.
The only thing you've proven is that your conclusion is based on absolutely nothing.
well you are
you say "Comments containing excessive profanity, spam, flames, or promotion will be deleted. Users who continue to make these kinds of comments will have their comment posting privileges revoked."
i know a bunch of people who do that but do qj do there job nope
thats why i consider you and the rest of qj brianless becuase qj say something but does not do it
