We would like to start this article with a sincere apology and by admitting that yesterday's article claiming that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories required PSP firmware 2.81 was incorrect. We based this information on data we had obtained from what we thought was a trustworthy news source, but it appears we were wrong. The fact of the matter is that you can play Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories without updating to 2.81, using Booster's amazing DevHook. All you have to do is emulate firmware 2.71 and select the 2.xx to 2.00 UMD option and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories will work fine. The 2.81 update is on the UMD disc, but you do not have to use it.
Discussion has been rife on this subject both in the comments section and in our forums, with many PSP owners confused on whether to buy Vice City Stories or not because of this. We have had it confirmed by many of our forum users that it works with 2.xx to 2.00 UMD option in DevHook and firmware 2.71 emulation. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you, but it was a mistake that we highly regret. Most of you will have probably discovered that VCS works on 2.71 with DevHook, but this post is an informative article and is an apology from us to you. How will we repay you? By giving you the best news 24/7 of course!
An 11-page discussion in our forums has been going on since yesterday, so if you want to get in on the action, all you have to do is head over to our forums. This may be an apology, but it is clear now that you can have Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories playable with homebrew on 1.5 and with Dark_Alex's 2.71 SE-B custom firmware using the miracles of DevHook. 2.81 did not change the encryption / decryption keys so I do not see why 2.71 would not be able to play it. I wonder if 2.82 can be decrypted or if Sony changed the scheme once again to throw off Dark_Alex.
I feel bad for all those kids yesterday who kept insisting this 2.82 rumour was correct when everyone else kept trying to tell them that they were wrong. That we were in fact playing the game on our devhook 2.71's. Oh well, they must be so ashamed now.

It works on Devhook 2.71, not a PSP updated to 2.71.
I have Devhook .46 and the 2.71 firmware files for emulation. When I attempt to run the game from the UMD via emulated 2.71 I am told that the game cannot run without firmare version 2.81.
The game DOES work if I launch it from an unmodified ISO ripped directly from the UMD disc.
It would appear that people are making assumptions about what works and about what does not work without actually confirming any reports.
Don't worry 'bout it QJ, you're still the best PSP news site by far.
Now all I've gotta do is find some money to go and buy it.

If you care about homebrew that much, then you WOULD NOT update to 2.81 ....but since you CHOOSE to leave the homebrew for GTA.

Well I've just bought Ace Combat X: Skies Of Deception and say what? I saw that damn update icon under the umd icon telling that it's the 2.81 update... I felt worried and so angry at the same time and I was saying f- sony and their worthless updates, I immediately rushed for devhook and tested it even if it's limited to 2.71, and it DID work!... I really dunno how it's possible in technocal terms but the settings I've made are the same as the ones that QJ are recommending for GTA VCS

If it doesn't work for you now, you can just wait until Booster releases 2.81 emulation for Devhook. It's probably in its final stages now. I would expect it in the next 2 weeks. But what do I know? I'm just an unregistered user posting on a PSP news site. If that doesn't reek of nerd, I don't know what does.

As I stated in my previous posting, I have not been able to launch the UMD disc via Devhook. I was only able to launch the game after ripping an ISO file and launching that unmodified ISO in Devhook.
As the ISO works without any patching, it is possible that Devhook can be modified to run from the UMD without too much difficulty, but at present I know of no means for launching the UMD directly via Devhook, unless a 'swap' trick works.
logicbonb.de is an inbred retard who doesn't know how to read. THIS GAME WORKS ON 2.71 DEVHOOK. You have to use the 2.xx>>2.00 option (which you should be using on all games anyhow), and it WILL LOAD. The game does NOT work on untouched 2.71 so you have to run DevHook to do it (which CAN be done even on TA-082 mobos).

I can run the ISO straight from the game menu of SE-B, no DevHook. It works perfectly.
And the ISO doesn't have to be unmodified. I ripped the Update, boot.bin, and some padding, and got the size to 1GB, and I didn't CSO it because I didn't want the game to lag.

Yeah,i have it running from the XMB just fine. Just remember that if you compress the game, you will want to download the new overclocking module. I love VCS :) :) :) :)

There was a little confusion over the whole ISO V UMD issue, (which looks like it has cleared up.)
Apparently, with SE-B, the ISO can load from the XMB (the whole point of this article)
also apparently, if you are using SE-B, you can insert a game of 2.71 firmware, begin the game, then eject, and insert VCS and it will work (sounds crazy to me, but people have commented saying it is fine)
hope I got all of that right, and I hope this has cleared it up for some of you.

I have the same setting and the UMD does not work either. Edison Carter came to the same conclusion in a different forum.

The video is pretty much self explanitory. I made three different videos just to prove to people that it wasn't fake or a joke of an kind. My Bait & Switch method has werked each time for me, except when I used the game Infected. Socom FTB and the DEMO UMD work great in my method to get VCS werking on 2.71(SE-B) go check it out and see for yourselves!!!! THAT IS ALL!!!!

Umm...it was your decision to upgrade, and you should know by now that you should always wait a couple of days before making any big decisions. There was (as still is) always a hope that at new devhook will come out and run it off a UMD, but obviously you just couldn't wait to upgrade. Its still a PSP, so get over it.

yep, you need an iso... umd dont work. i just picked my copy up from eb games, when you try to run umd, it says, "this game requires 2.81, you currently have system 2.71" it says that even with that option of changing whatever 2.xx to 2.00. so yea, you need an iso

the .cso is still a lil bit laggy in 333, but if you leave it uncompressed iso, no lag even at 222.
it will take up a lot of space on your memstick, but you can rip out the dumm and update files to get it down about 1GB uncompressed.

The game is fun also, but i'm not going to buy it, because Rockstar is not taking us serious. There is no technical reason to make/force us update to 2.81 when it can be played on 2.71. But they (and that is Sony) are trying to force us so we cannot use our beloved homebrew anymore.
(I, for myself, love al the emulators available for the PSP and I am waiting for a good PS1 emulator so I can play some original bought games that I own on it and don't have to pay again (!!) to Sony for a game I already own when FW 3.0 with PS1 emulation comes out.)
And that is the reason nobody should buy this game and other games which do the same. Maybe producers will say to Sony "sorry no forced updates, nobody will buy our games if we do that" in the future.

IS it just me or does this game lag like a champ? When played at 222Mhz on DevHook its lags with every movement and even at 333Mhz its deff way better but I think there is more lag then there should be. Anyone else agree?

Works for me too - clean dump ISO, compressed to CSO (around 915mb), running on 2.71 SE-B. Worked just like any other ISO/CSO. no tricks! +D

I figured out how to use custom tracks on vice city stories... i tried telling Qj but my email adress keeps on getting rejected by them... =\
well here's a copy of what i said:
Alright I figured out how to get custom music tracks working on vice city stories. When I was looking online, I noticed that rockstar didn't make a custom tracks maker for vice city stories yet. I ended up looking at my other custom tracks for liberty city stories and noticed that the file name on it was ULUS10041CUSTOMTRACKS. The ULUS10041 part happened to be the first part of ULUS10041S3 which is the save data for Liberty City Stories. I looked at the save data for Vice City Stories and it was ULUS10160S92F0. I copied everything before the S in the file name and I renamed ULUS10041CUSTOMTRACKS to ULUS10160CUSTOMTRACKS and it worked in Vice City Stories.
All you really need is to download the Rockstar Custom Track v1.0 maker and have a LCS save data on the memorystick (which can be obtained online from sites) in order to rip cds into custom tracks. Then you just rename the folders like I did above and it should work.

HEY HE DIDNT MENTION THAT YOU COULD USE A SWAP METHOD...
You stick in a regular umd first... and then when u execute the game from the xmb menu, switch the umd really fast with the vice city stories one...
worked for me =]..
they should fix up that post to clear up things cuz it says so in the fourms

Translation: In the Devhook setup in a second menu there will be an option called "UMD SFO version" or something along those lines (in the second menu). By default it's set to No Change, but if you set it to --->"2.xx to 2.00 UMD"
