Thai official wants to prosecute game makers for copycat crimes

If this official's words are taken seriously, anyone who mimics Sub Zero and kills someone would get Ed Boon in trouble - Image 1Imagine this very unlikely scenario: You're playing Funcom's Age of Conan (or heck, even the Conan game on the 360 or PS3) and you perform a couple of fatalities.

Thinking these fatalities to be awesome, you grab a sharp tool and set out to see if you can pull it off in real life. You're caught after committing your first murder, and you confess that you were just trying to act out what you saw in AoC.

Alright, that's strange enough. Now, what would you say if we told you that a Thai government official said that he wants to prosecute game makers for instances of people performing crimes that mimic things they saw in a video game? Well, that's exactly what one Somchai Jaroen-amnuaysuk of the Welfare Promotion, Protection and Empowerment of Vulnerable Groups Office said recently.

To quote the official:

When a player copycats a crime he or she sees in the game, the game maker should be prosecuted. Prosecutions will automatically force game makers to act more responsibly.

We foresee quite a number of logistical problems (among other concerns) in implementing such a thing, should such an idea ever become a law. Thankfully, it's just one government official speaking his mind. Feel free to speak your mind as well in the comments.

Ugh....

Here we go......Sic em' boys...

by rollypoly - 2008-08-13 09:13:12
um

this is just retarded...

so does that mean i should prosecute the bush administration for inspiring peeping toms(wiretapping), kids shooting each other (friendly fire), and drug use (ey bush did it)?

imprison them all and dismember them at a rate of a piece per day (piece size may vary depending on how sadistic the guard is).

by TomClancy - 2008-08-13 09:15:21
Sue'em all...

I am gonna sue Warner Bros. Pictures 'cause the movie 300 made me fly down to the mid-east and kill Persians!

by chessboxer - 2008-08-13 09:18:42
Dumb,

stupid, ignorant, asinine, unintelligent, thickheaded, idiotic, worthless, imbecilic comments from another government moron who obviously believes that crime never existed before games were around.

If I killed this person by squashing him with a big rolling oil barrel or jumped on his head and squashed him, are they going to prosecute Nintendo?

Thai government official = epic fail.

by TheLastGuitarHero - 2008-08-13 09:34:09
...

Woooooooooooooooooow.

by akeemb - 2008-08-13 09:36:57
the games don't say....

To do what the characters do.
Its THEIR choice.
PLUS I could injure somebody and say I got it from GTA for example (even though I havent playd it) and still get rockstar sued.

I'm sure you get disclaimers at the start of every game nowadays

by BananaFish - 2008-08-13 10:08:17
Well

I just crashed my car, If it hadn't been for that damn Burnout game i never would have done so! Damn you Burnout developers, give me some monies!

by Xastabus - 2008-08-13 10:38:01
Right...

Because developers put some kind of mind control in their games that makes people think murder is a good idea. Politicians everywhere need to get a life, a real job, and stop making braindead statements.

In fact, I think a certain level of intelligence should be a prerequisite to holding any kind of public office. Say, perhaps, having better sense than the powers that be gave a turnip.

by 73N5H1 - 2008-08-13 11:12:27
how stupid can people be?

why do officials never look at the real problem.... Normal people don't emulate video games... People that copy violent acts in video games and movies HAVE *****ING PROBLEMS and would be doing something socially unacceptable anyways, regardless if its being copied from something or not... They need to address why these people are becoming mentally unstable rather than what they choose to copy after the fact.

by Dremth - 2008-08-13 11:21:01
uhh

ok, so wouldnt that mean that if i went and killed someone and said it was because a thai official made me mad, then the thai official should be prosecuted.
sounds pretty dumb, right? so does what the thai official said. stop blaming all your crime on video games. you should spend your time actually doing some research instead of just blaming the easy candidate you thai dumb*****.

by Auraomega - 2008-08-13 11:29:22
Pathetic

Truely pathetic, I refer to what I said in another post. Scapegoats. They are trying to push the blame over onto someone else all the time.

(I'm taking this from Tim Buckley's CAD), what would happen if someone killed someone and said it was because they heard someone did it on the news?

(Again taken from CAD) what if someone jumps out of a tree onto someone like in Mario, are they going to sue Nintendo and stop that? Or how about street racing? Band Need For Speed? How about shooting someone? Ban all shooting games? How about hitting someone with a stick? Ban all RPGs and anything containing a sword...?

Ok, maybe my above point was a little extreame, but if that is the case, then we'd be fast running out of games to play, lets face it, every game out there has SOME amount of violence...

And what next? When they ban games and violence still prevails in society, ban movies, books, TV, radio, music and every form of media, popular or not? Even then, I'm sure violence would still be around, if I remember rightly, at the dawn of man we didn't have games and yet there was still no doubt murder.

Small mercy then that this won't ever reach the major countries, they are generating too much revenue from games and, as pointed out before, its a scapegoat, they can give all the bad publicity to games and shift it away from their lack of attempts at sorting the root of the problem.

My friends kikt the crap outta me

for stomping on their special mushrooms... so I kickt their turtles across the floor.

...but Mario made me do it.

by Matt-N - 2008-08-13 11:44:34
** I AGREE WITH IT!!! **

I bet that got your attention lol!

I used to be a law student - this type of prosecution would never work. The logic behind it doesn't take 'reason' into account.

This world never ceases to amaze me.

by Matt-N - 2008-08-13 11:47:50
Kikt

That's the best spelling of Kicked I've ever seen *adopts*

Another for the funniest courtroom hearings

I have to agree, I'd love to see them try and uphold that in court, would be rather funny I think:

Lawyer 1 - "Your honour, the defendent killed a taxi driver, he must have got the idea from GTA"

Lawyer 2 - "You do realise that taxi drivers were murdered before GTA was produced"

Lawyer 1 - "Yes, but we are refering to a time AFTER GTA was made, so it MUST be due to playing said game, theres no other way a person in this day and age could have thought this one up himself"

by logicbomb.de - 2008-08-13 11:59:17
kikt

Yup,

its official

by kraft - 2008-08-13 12:19:15
..

Reading about people who think games are the cause of murders and crimes make me wana kill more much more than a video game ever could

by kupomogli - 2008-08-13 13:21:45
The government is retarded.

Anyone remember the Columbine incident? In 1999, two teens went to school dressed in trench coats with guns, killed a bunch of students and teachers.

This was before GTA3, and the kids blamed it on the Matrix. Now that video games are so popular and something new, the government places the blame on them instead. Most movies are far worse than any video game will ever be(Goodfellas, Hostel, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc.)

I don't see why. People can make their own decisions. Usually it goes off in your head. "Hey, this is bad, don't do it." They only have themselves to blame for going through with it.

-andrew- -kupomogli-

by mohaas05 - 2008-08-13 13:21:50
omg...

now this is just too far. its obvious that the government is trying to shift the blame to the game makers for increased public support.

by GW2 - 2008-08-13 13:38:02
try it

thats all i have to say

by Brant - 2008-08-13 14:05:15
Oh man..

So I was eating mushrooms today and punch floating bricks, and some cops was all like, Mamma mia what the hell are you doing? So I just shot a fireball at him.
Now they are trying to put me in jail.
it's completely unfair, I don't deserve to be arrested I was just trying to copycat the crimes in Super Mario Bros.
It's the games fault.

by rollypoly - 2008-08-13 14:35:41
actually

they did blame doom as well.

both of the killers played, one of em was a level designer...

by Nevers - 2008-08-13 15:00:53
I thank you

by Doom_master1122 - 2008-08-13 17:37:35
Sorry nintendo

I jumped on a turtle and killed it (not really).
Looks like you are in trouble.

I wish people would keep their freaking siblings, friends, cities, etc under control. If they arent healthy or mentally right to play them, then dontt let them play them.
UGH!!!!!!
I'm going to be raging now for the rest of the day.

by failtorespond - 2008-08-13 17:58:21
lol

According to this, if Bush were Thai he would be put on trial for playing too much command and conquer and acting it out. lol

by JediKnightJace - 2008-08-13 21:02:54
....right.

.........Alrighty then... Look, I hate undue violence in videogames (or any medium really), but this is just STUPID.

by blinxRED - 2008-08-13 21:10:44
@#&^#$@%&

Thats just stupid

by pissteeth - 2008-08-13 22:10:57
OH NO!!!

EVERYONE THAT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE CREATION OF GTA4 IS GOING TO GET THROWN IN THAI PRISON!!!!!!!!!

by NakedFaerie - 2008-08-14 01:44:38
bullcrap!

I want to sue the creators of pacman coz i ate a heap of white pills then saw ghosts after eating the big yellow one.

by NakedFaerie - 2008-08-14 01:53:30
sue them

I also want to sue the movie studios coz I saw a movie with someone getting shot and I want to see if that happens the same in real life....

wow, america should sue itself as thats where most of the movies are made and most of the murders happen.

by du.der.icio.us - 2008-08-14 04:16:11
How about going after actual criminals?

Like ...
If you really break a law ...
And someone else does it too ...
Then you get charged for their crime ...
And it should domino ...
So if there are 2 copy cats ...
The first copy cat gets in trouble for the second one ...
And so does the initial offender ...
QED ...
Adam ate an apple ...
Look at all the apple eaters in the world ...
Adam's never getting out of trouble.

-- dude

by Dougie321 - 2008-08-14 05:34:40
well then

They might as well prosecute every film with the slightest bit of violence while their at it cause if its a "copycat" crime they want to prosecute video game develepors on then theres lots of people copying fight scene's from movies, shooting guns just like in the movies and loads of crimes from movies aswell...

by Xastabus - 2008-08-14 06:43:29
Lawyer 2

"For the benefit of the jury, can you demonstrate any mission or activity in GTA where you are required to murder a Taxi driver?"

by Xastabus - 2008-08-14 06:47:57
Um...

If you ate a heap of white pills, shouldn't you be dead?

This just in, creators of PacMan sued for accidental overdose death. The victim's family said he had played the game.

by mouse01 - 2008-08-14 07:21:18
The Bigger Picture

you guys are missing the bigger picture here. if they can sue the game makers for people who commit copy cat crimes, then the game makers could sue the copy cat for copyright infringment. after all, killing people for fun is their intellectual property.

by akmalisthepimp - 2008-08-14 14:25:18
ALirght this is the truth

the truth is video games are called VIDEOOOOO GGAAAMMEE
not real that was the first thing my mom told me when she bought me a PlayStation 1 back in the day, now for somebody to say that video game makers should responsible how the fu## are they going to control Everyone u know, their are a lot of sick FU##s out there who just wanna die and take some life's at the same time. In conclusion blame a video game for their own wrong doing.
We should Blame movie makers like batman the dark knight lol tooo than if, its going this way. somebody just might dress up as a clown who stabs a few people lol is that a game or your own wrong doing. or even blame the fact that your crazy.

by Jmak01 - 2008-08-14 15:19:40
insane

hmm, what crime shall i commit next? oh yeah ill just kill a random guy and steal his car, but first i need to act it out on gta4 so that I don't get the blame... they'll blame it on rockstar instead! genius!

by ra1n - 2008-08-14 22:30:50
hmm

how about not being stupid and copy a video game? there not reset button in life. you killed a guy because it looks cool in game then go to jail for the rest of your life, sounds even a life for another life.

by org3rulz - 2008-08-15 07:28:25
...hmmmm.....

Counter Strike inspired me to join the Army better sue Valve.
Or better yet NBA Live inspired me to get off my butt and play basketball Im technically copycatting the game EA Sports owes me some money. This has got to be the worst example of legislation I have ever seen thank god it hasn't been passed or I'd really feel sorry for developers marketing in Thailand

by dark420bishop - 2008-08-17 10:50:58
what a retard

they tried this with movies already and it failed miserably. good luck, dip*****.

by NakedFaerie - 2008-08-25 05:35:51
You got a point.

You got a point. I never thought of it that way.
Sue the copycat for copyright. Way to go. Good thought mouse01 :D

But the copycat doesnt kill for fun, they kill for stupidity. You would have to be really stupid to do it in real life.

by jacobian91 - 2008-09-04 11:41:15
also

They blamed Marilyn Manson music.
Kinda rediculous I think.

Wait...did one of the killers at least try to run on walls...or something?

by jacobian91 - 2008-09-04 11:45:37
I recall

that something similar to this happened when that one dude made an assassination attempt on Raegun (spelling?).

They made fun of that on Code Monkeys!
