Thai official wants to prosecute game makers for copycat crimes |

Imagine this very unlikely scenario: You're playing Funcom's Age of Conan (or heck, even the Conan game on the 360 or PS3) and you perform a couple of fatalities. Thinking these fatalities to be awesome, you grab a sharp tool and set out to see if you can pull it off in real life. You're caught after committing your first murder, and you confess that you were just trying to act out what you saw in AoC.
Alright, that's strange enough. Now, what would you say if we told you that a Thai government official said that he wants to prosecute game makers for instances of people performing crimes that mimic things they saw in a video game? Well, that's exactly what one Somchai Jaroen-amnuaysuk of the Welfare Promotion, Protection and Empowerment of Vulnerable Groups Office said recently.
To quote the official:
When a player copycats a crime he or she sees in the game, the game maker should be prosecuted. Prosecutions will automatically force game makers to act more responsibly.
We foresee quite a number of logistical problems (among other concerns) in implementing such a thing, should such an idea ever become a law. Thankfully, it's just one government official speaking his mind. Feel free to speak your mind as well in the comments.

so does that mean i should prosecute the bush administration for inspiring peeping toms(wiretappin g), kids shooting each other (friendly fire), and drug use (ey bush did it)?
imprison them all and dismember them at a rate of a piece per day (piece size may vary depending on how sadistic the guard is).

If I killed this person by squashing him with a big rolling oil barrel or jumped on his head and squashed him, are they going to prosecute Nintendo?
Thai government official = epic fail.

Its THEIR choice.
PLUS I could injure somebody and say I got it from GTA for example (even though I havent playd it) and still get rockstar sued.
I'm sure you get disclaimers at the start of every game nowadays

In fact, I think a certain level of intelligence should be a prerequisite to holding any kind of public office. Say, perhaps, having better sense than the powers that be gave a turnip.

sounds pretty dumb, right? so does what the thai official said. stop blaming all your crime on video games. you should spend your time actually doing some research instead of just blaming the easy candidate you thai dumb*****.

(I'm taking this from Tim Buckley's CAD), what would happen if someone killed someone and said it was because they heard someone did it on the news?
(Again taken from CAD) what if someone jumps out of a tree onto someone like in Mario, are they going to sue Nintendo and stop that? Or how about street racing? Band Need For Speed? How about shooting someone? Ban all shooting games? How about hitting someone with a stick? Ban all RPGs and anything containing a sword...?
Ok, maybe my above point was a little extreame, but if that is the case, then we'd be fast running out of games to play, lets face it, every game out there has SOME amount of violence...
And what next? When they ban games and violence still prevails in society, ban movies, books, TV, radio, music and every form of media, popular or not? Even then, I'm sure violence would still be around, if I remember rightly, at the dawn of man we didn't have games and yet there was still no doubt murder.
Small mercy then that this won't ever reach the major countries, they are generating too much revenue from games and, as pointed out before, its a scapegoat, they can give all the bad publicity to games and shift it away from their lack of attempts at sorting the root of the problem.

...but Mario made me do it.

I used to be a law student - this type of prosecution would never work. The logic behind it doesn't take 'reason' into account.
This world never ceases to amaze me.

Lawyer 1 - "Your honour, the defendent killed a taxi driver, he must have got the idea from GTA"
Lawyer 2 - "You do realise that taxi drivers were murdered before GTA was produced"
Lawyer 1 - "Yes, but we are refering to a time AFTER GTA was made, so it MUST be due to playing said game, theres no other way a person in this day and age could have thought this one up himself"

This was before GTA3, and the kids blamed it on the Matrix. Now that video games are so popular and something new, the government places the blame on them instead. Most movies are far worse than any video game will ever be(Goodfellas, Hostel, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc.)
I don't see why. People can make their own decisions. Usually it goes off in your head. "Hey, this is bad, don't do it." They only have themselves to blame for going through with it.

Now they are trying to put me in jail.
it's completely unfair, I don't deserve to be arrested I was just trying to copycat the crimes in Super Mario Bros.
It's the games fault.

If you really break a law ...
And someone else does it too ...
Then you get charged for their crime ...
And it should domino ...
So if there are 2 copy cats ...
The first copy cat gets in trouble for the second one ...
And so does the initial offender ...
QED ...

Look at all the apple eaters in the world ...
Adam's never getting out of trouble.

In conclusion blame a video game for their own wrong doing.
We should Blame movie makers like batman the dark knight lol tooo than if, its going this way. somebody just might dress up as a clown who stabs a few people lol is that a game or your own wrong doing. or even blame the fact that your crazy.

Or better yet NBA Live inspired me to get off my butt and play basketball Im technically copycatting the game EA Sports owes me some money. This has got to be the worst example of legislation I have ever seen thank god it hasn't been passed or I'd really feel sorry for developers marketing in Thailand

Sue the copycat for copyright. Way to go. Good thought mouse01
But the copycat doesnt kill for fun, they kill for stupidity. You would have to be really stupid to do it in real life.

Kinda rediculous I think.
Wait...did one of the killers at least try to run on walls...or something?
