Tanya Byron's video game review cost about USD 544,000 |
Ó
Now, let's get down to business. Get a hold of this. The total cost of the study she did was £275,000. That's around US$544,000.
This particular information was released by UK Minister of State for Culture, Creative Industries and Tourism, Margaret Hodge. This was a response from an inquiry from the Parliament.
Aside from this figure, Hodge actually wrote down additional remarks regarding this matter. In her statement, she wrote:
The review has just ended and while accounting procedures are still to be completed, we estimate that a total of around £275,000 has been spent on the review, not including salaries and expenses of the civil servants on the Review’s secretariat.
This included expenditure on consultation with parents and other stakeholders, and a comprehensive literature review.
Now, this is certainly a big amount of money that was used. What do you guys think about this information? If you've got something to share, feel free to do so with the space below.

The byron report was pretty fair and balanced it was also a quality bit of research.
Its also rather cheap when compared to most of the things that they waste money on and i don't think that you could say this was a waste.
That sum is really very small in government and reasearch terms.
They could have used that money to help feed a lot of hungry people or used it to educate poor children who need a stable life.
precisely why i hate these stupid researchers and analyst's they dont contribute at all to society and have the worst most pointless job in the world
also they like to spend money so it adds some strength to there result, even though the result was common sense and was known by everyone without a mental illness
also the iraq war, the amount the usa spent couldve solved world hunger, give free medical and educational care to everyone and so much more
this is why the usa should be brought down england too, theyre bloody dictators the lot of them.
I remember posting in the April 16th article about her statement regarding games being like heroin, that Bryon was one of those who like "to sensationalize things and make a name for themselves (ahem, ..Ms Byron) by trotting out the "It's an addiction!!!" ....And, it's more than that here: it's making money out of quakery. This isn't 'medicine' or 'psychology'; it's MAKING MONEY. I remember also posting in a similar article topic recently that these useless type of "Doctors" are just doing their best to try to get something like "video game addiction" recognized as a 'disease', so that then insurers will be obligated to pay their exorbitant fees. .....I think this article proves that it's all about the Benjamins' for Byron and her ilk.
All they want is a ratings system like the ESRB. The ESRB convinced the game companies that they would rather rate themselves, than have the US govt. do it for them.
I saw a comment on the article about her report and one of the comments asked "How can a kid prove he's over 12, bring in his parent?" Yeah. You can be 8 and your mom can take you in to buy GTA4 on 4/29 no problem. But you can't sell an 8 year old (or 14 for that matter) GTA4 if he's by his self. That's not a bad thing.
I'd rather see my tax dollars gone towards fair and balanced research than to feed people who sit on ass and leech of the government all day. Get to work if you want to eat, start earning a living like everyone else.
Research is funded like this. Surprised? To have the kind of data and interviewing necessary for this kind of a publication, you need to pay a staff. To pay a staff you need money. It's no different than any other research-based publication. Whether or not you agree on whether this is worthwhile research is a whole other matter.
