Tales of VS officially announced; details, screenshots revealed |
Ó
If you're still thinking that the Dissidia-like Tales of VS game from Namco Bandai was a late April Fools joke, stop. Stop right now. The company's finally gotten around to releasing an official announcement for the game along with some details about the gameplay.
Tales of VS will feature a roster of 35 characters coming from 13 different Tales games. These characters will fight it out against one another in 2D stages, some with walls that have different heights to add more action. The walls also serve another purpose: you can perform new combos on your opponent when their back is against the wall via the new "Bounding" system.
The franchise's Linear Motion Battle System will also be used in the fights so fans won't have to learn new controls outright. Grade Points are also still in, but this time they're earned by winning battles. You can then use them to increase your character's parameters. Depending on how you distribute the points, you can end up with a character that has a totally different fighting style from what you started out with.
There's also an obligatory story mode called Yggdrasil Battle Mode thrown in. This mode is about fighters from four different kingdoms. Kinda sounds like a rather thin excuse to bring some four-player brawls to the screen, but I'm not complaining.
Tales of VS will also feature full voice acting in the main scenario. Mini-games and cross-platform support with mobiles are also planned, although the latter would probably be dropped if the game ever makes it outside Japan (keep your fingers crossed, guys!).
Animation studio Production I.G. has been tapped to create the opening animation while Girls Next Door will be doing the theme song. Haven't heard Girls Next Door yet but I.G. has yet to disappoint me when it comes to animation so it should be good.

This is godsend! I just hope they don't skimp out on the battle system and make it as balanced as possible. (tear grants better be in
Namco Bandai, let's have an English version please! Make it work! ;-) Good job in keeping the LMBS. I always thought it would be fun in a fighting game!
