Take-Two calls Manhunt 2 "fine piece of art" |

Despite getting banned in some European countries and earning an "Adults Only" rating in the U.S., Take-Two Interactive chairman Strauss Zelnick stated that all that Rockstar Games did with Manhunt 2 was make a horror game that "fits squarely within the horror genre" as it was intended to, and added that "it brings a unique, formerly unheard of cinematic quality to interactive entertainment, and is also a fine piece of art."Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter wants to remind Strauss and Take-Two that "art" is not everything when it comes to making games.
This is one of the tasks ahead of new management, to rein in that creative talent and tell those guys we are in the business of making money and you should make games that will sell, not games that are artistically beautiful but not available at Wal-Mart.
Indeed, financial troubles may very well aggravate Take-Two's already precarious monetary standing. The company's revenue last year amounted to US$ 1 billion, and Manhunt 2 is expected to net about US$ 40 million, which will be cut in half should Manhunt 2 sustain its "Adults Only" rating. If it did get a "Mature" rating after they censor the game, then the revenue will be lessened to about US$ 35 billion.
An "Adults Only" rating will mean that most major retail stores will not have Manhunt 2 in their shelves, including Wal-Mart. ESRB said that the rating can be appealed or the game modified to earn a "Mature" rating. However, Rockstar did not release any statements whether it will do anything in regard to the rating the ESRB issued the game.
The speculation that video games cause violent behavior has not been proven, but the fact that it will hurt Manhunt 2's sales cannot be denied. Despite the supposed July 10 release date, both Sony and Nintendo have announced that they will not support the game if it will keep its newly-earned "AO" rating.

hmm
who gives a rats ass if some kid's parents won't buy it for him anyway. not me
plenty of people like me will buy it, just like plenty of people go watch the chainsaw masacre, jason, friday the thirteenth and other movies like that. if violent movies can make big bucks, whats so different about a violent game.

.....both Sony and Nintendo have announced that they will not support the game if it will keep its newly-earned "AO" rating.
Is it just that they wont give it there "seal of approval" or will it not be playable on the console?
Did Sony actually remove the ability to play AO stuff from the PS2/PS3 ??
Sorry I haven't tried any "porn" in mine yet

If rockstar decides to leave their "Art" as-is this game will become an xbox360 exclusive (microsoft has no such policy and reviews on a title-by-title basis). As Microsoft is attempting very strongly to make friends with the big boys at Take2 i'd expect that they'd welcome the title with open arms.
If anything it should be interesting to see how this unfolds.

lets hope rockstar release an uncut version in europe and tones it down if needed for Us, or releases 2 versions so adults who want to can enjoy it,,
It sooo easy to post a screen shot of blood, or whine to media "OMG you know what you can do in that game "..just like back in mortal kombat days,, Manhunt is great and suspenseful, the killings arnt the focus of the player after a while but the story is,,,

mk2,gta and manhunt are rare exeptions of games i think are great, SMB3 and the old arcade Toki is my favorite games , no violence there :)
but controversy sells :) so hopefullly manhunt 2 will sell lot if they release 2 US versions or a toned down one..
if you want to fight violence fight the warprofiters and arms dealers instead then you can actually make a difference

I'll take my whining to an anti-christian death metal band, which is a more appropriate and receptive forum of my criticism.

So killing in a video game is an art when countless people in real world are killed for nothing, massmurdered, for oil, for God, or any excuse man can come up with.
But Jack Thompson doesn't complaint about those. He doesn't complaint about children watching dead people on tv everyday who had nothing to do with games. May be his children don't, because he wants to keep them in blissful ignorance. But people still kill each other anyway.
Jack Thompson should get his a$$ off the moral high horse.
