PSP

A lot of you may have forgotten, but today is a very important one for the homebrew community. Exactly a year ago, a Spanish group carrying the name PSP-DEV provided a light to the many who were blinded in the dark; paved the way for those who were lost; and guided them to find the light.

I may be getting a little too dramatic, but let's just say that it's a carryover of the joy I, and I'm sure all of you, had when CybBlade, Pawstick and Killer-X brought to us the very first exploit for FW 1.50 - Swaploit. June 15, 2005 marked the date when the said method first serve American PSP users the very good taste of homebrew for their PSP.

It must be taken into note that right after the Hello World exploit for FW 1.0, before PSPs were launched outside of Japan, Sony released their FW update thus blocking homebrew for gamers around the world who just bought theis handhelds. Swaploit, a method that may be considered medieval in terms of modern technology, answered the prayers of many to have emulators and homebrew for their newly blocked PSPs.

Crude yet very effective, Swaploit worked by swapping Memory Sticks while starting the application. It may not have basked long in terms of popularity among homebrew users (a week later the same guys released KXploit), but it still holds a very special place in most PSPanatics' hearts because it was the very first tool that gave us the power to go up against the updates, giving us the power to use our PSP the way we want.

It has given us the hope that if an exploit could have been made in the very first update, it'll only take time before other FWs are hacked as well. That very same achievement is the very thing that makes other users hold on to the dream of having another tool to use against the latest update. We already have the Devhook, and pretty soon we'll have the modchip, things are indeed very looking bright for us - no small thanks to Swaploit.

Whenever I think of this, I always remember the line "The darkest hour of the night is right before the Sun comes out". Indeed the days before Swaploit were very sad and dark, right now, I'd like to think we're all basking under the heat of midday sun.

Amidst reminiscing those good old days, I sincerely ask for everyone to offer a few seconds of silence for CybBlade whom we lost to cancer last year...

» HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Damn, one year already? I remember sitting in the school Comp Labs refreshing the download page just before it was released.. remember everyone calling BS over the whole thing? And reports of people ****ing up their MS's just before kxploit got released? and wasn't this place still called psphacker.net aswell? They were good times for the PSP (maybe not the MS thing =p).

It always makes me laugh when I see noobs posting in stuff like the Daed.R5 release that 10-12 fps isn't good enough, we need a 200% increase blah blah, who remembers the first SNES emulators? they had about 29 rc's iirc before TTYL got released, and most people would be happy with just a 1-2fps increase. I sure most of the PSP vet's are fine with thhow r5 is going, maybe if some of the noobs had gone thru the earlier homebrew developments then they would be much more grateful...

» Sorry about that...

This one was actually written hours before the time it was posted (check time 12:42 am), but it got lost with the tons of other news we're having. I not for that, it would have made the July 15 date. I know it's no excuse, but still...

I remembering staying up that night until 1 am then finally trying to sleep. I couldnt sleep. I ended up waking up at 7am with no alarm. I instantly got into the IRC channel (#ps2info? - was that it?) and found that it had been leaked a few hours early. At that time i only had me 32mb card, thank god for walmart bc i ran up there to grab another 32mb to take advantage of the swap exploit.

» THANKS PSP-DEV, RIP CYBLADE

I pratically broke my memory stick door in the first week using this expolit and I loved it! Thanks for shocking the PSP into excitement and laying the groundwork for what it is today.

As it has been and so it shall be, your names are released to the records of PSP GODS.

And I agree with loser, the Wikipedia article doesn't nearly do the "history" of PSP homebrew justice.

» HELLO!!

Some of you guys are assuming that Cyblade is the one who found the exploit when in fact it was Killer X. OK!! Hence KXploit.

Just because cyblade died does not mean he found the exploit.

by ACiD - 2006-06-16 11:04
» Thank you.

I still use kxploit to this day! When I first bought my 1.5 PSP, it was cause of this.

What kind of cancer did CybBlade die from? i hope it wasn't lung cancer :(

Thankyou for this exploit.

» AHH THE DAYS...

The days of using a memory stick, starting up Nester J and then quickly switching memory sticks while on the loading screne. I'll never forget my surprise when I saw that it actually worked. I'll admit it, I hopped on the net like a crackhead trying to score a fix downloading all the Nester and SNES roms I could find, and I found quite a bit. To play games like Contra and Kung Fu again as well as TMNT,NBA Jam and Desert Strike was such a rush. I am forever grateful to the devs of these major homebrews for giving me back a piece of my childhood that I can forever carry with me wherever I might go. THANK YOU!!!!

I remember the day I couldnt get the swap methoid to work. To be honest I allmost forgot. Cyblade because of you we diddnt have to use that swap methoid. It was because of you that there was hope. We give everyone who did this just as equal rights as you however you are the one who died.

I am going to have a moment of silance in my room to moarn your death. Heros are not forgoten, but legends never die.

Rest In Peace Cyblade.
