Survey says: 93% of Dutch youth download illegally |
Ó
EenVandaag, a Dutch current affairs TV program, recently conducted a
survey on their youth's downloading habits. What the survey found was
that a whopping 93% of the youngsters download content in a manner that
most laws would consider illegal, citing the use of BitTorrent among
other popular download programs. With a sample of 3,500 youngsters aged 12-24, EenVandaag found that only 5% of the group actually use paid download services like iTunes and Steam, while the last 2%, I presume, do not have "downloading habits" that the survey asks for.
But before you go judge the Dutch, you have to understand that downloading copyrighted material off the Internet for personal use is NOT illegal in The Netherlands - uploading is. This is a country that legalized marijuana and found that pot-smoking was actually reduced after.
Of course, there are many flaws to the accuracy of the survey. For one, the survey was packaged as a "download survey," so the data gathering most likely attracted respondents who are experienced on the subject, instead of a sampling method that would more accurately represent the population in general.
We gotta remember that casual surveys like this one can be misleading. But fact remains, that 93% or not, Dutch youngsters are definitely into the use of illegal download services.

well... Its GOOD!
Respect to Dutch people!
and... uploading prohibited - that's sad, very sad.
I wouldn't be suprised if it said 95% of the (computer owners with internet access ) world download illegally.
anyway studies are always wrong. you cant get an accurate result from 3.500 people. This is the sort of thing tabloids use to force their veiw on their readers.
I thought that was the law here too, you can download but just not upload.
The Netherlands has a population of 16,500,156 people ( 2009 estimate). 'Youngsters' 12-24 comprise 17.84% of the total population or ~2,943,628 people. This is our magic number.
For such a population, assuming you need a confidence level of 95% and even response distribution, a sample of 3320 respondents would yield a margin of error of only 1.7%.
So, yeah, thanks for playing.
This survey is a way of this dutch 'public' broadcaster to make a topic during the 'cumcumber-time'. In other words. In Holland the laws are very clear on what is allowed and not. However the survey was a kind of 'Maurice de Hond' (The .com-gate in Holland) survey: don't you think it is bad that stupid idiots don't download? er...yes...er...no...I don't think their are idiots, wait...er...I think it is okay to download, but just not illegal stuff....*****....can't answer this....Oh, but I want the iPhone!
Besides the above example, the survey has been modified due to overwelming comments on the survey by Tweakers.net users (one of the major groups targetted), which meant that people who did the survey early gave different answers.

I think that most people in the thread were right on the spot when saying the outcome would be that it was all downhill with youth, but the biggest issue is, that it is adults that give an example and they do read the law and they know if something is accepted or not.
the pot smokers went down after they made it legal.I wonder if it would in the us lol I don't want 2 smoke if no ones going 2 bust me lol what are ppl thinking. I think more ppl would download legally if there were better solutions like cheaper prices.or something. i mean tv is free. 4 the most part.
I thought that 93% of Dutchy's just wanted a Shmoke and a Pancake.
yeah !!!!!!
95% i thought it whas even higher :P
Television is not free, friendo.
Who pays the actors? The engineers, the lighting guys, the writers, the sound guys, set builders, the cameramen? Who pays the rent or property taxes on the buildings that shows are filmed in? Who pays for the electricity that runs the towers to broadcast the signals.
You do through one or a combination of these:
taxes
buying products advertised on television
subscription fees
Why does Photoshop cost as much as it does? Why does it cost anything at all?
Perhaps if they could go out and BUY the stuff without being discriminated against, then they would. But due to the absolutely 100% useless age restrictions that exist around the world, kids are forced to pirate games and movies in order to get them. I can only offer one bit of advice to those kids, PIRATE ON!
Any a$$hole who goes and passes any kind of judgement because someone is doing something he doesn't agree with, should be shot dead.
Let the dutch youth and the inaccurate numbers be, its not killing anyone. And if you ask me they deserve to be able to, a lot of countries have ridiculous rules in place over game sales and even games that come in to countries. Not to mention the delayed release dates for places outside of NA and Japan. If someone is waiting for a game for ages and finds out they have to wait for a release a whole year later than everyone else they deserve to "pirate" their games.
bias in so many different ways....
Damn you freaking PIRATES!! Get a job and buy your stuffs!
actually if everyone did a job and worked that job regular for free in theory everything could be free. but there are too many lazy *****s sitting on welfare living off the system and our hard earned taxes!!!
WE RULE :D
We got legal weed + legal downloads xD
I
When you say "here" where exactly are you talking about?
the dutch are even higher
"Any a$$hole who goes and passes any kind of judgement because someone is doing something he doesn't agree with, should be shot dead."
by that rationale, that is "any a$$hole" you would be shot dead as well.
but, you can't play favorites, now can you?
What? I said you (?) should be shot dead. Thats not passing judgement thats just wishing ill will upon folk. Read what I said carefully and wait for the wheel to blink and the light bulbs to turn.
from what i understand its legal to download pirated software in Netherlands so how can it be that they are doing it illegally if it is legal? I might be wrong but that was my interpretation from what I have read it is legal to download pirated software in Netherlands.
Its not illegal for them so don't judge!
I would definitely smoke waay more pot if it was legal here...
ooops I i mean less,
I mean I don't smoke! :P
The sample methode is used in this case. All people who are subscribet to the panel have got an invitation to join the servey.
Television ( VIA AIR TRANSMISSION) in the United States is free.
Yes, taxation goes toward the FCC governing the content, but that is as far as it goes. Having worked in the industry for 20+ years in the industry you would have known this. Everything you are commenting on is what it takes to get the programming aired.
Last time I looked (when I was working on the set) I got paid. I don't ever remember an option to take my paycheck and 're-invest' in the show so I could watch the damn thing.
Redundantly, other than taxes; subscriptions and products advertised are a "CHOICE". You must be a mush brain that the HULU commercials talk about because I have yet to be swayed to buy a product for the mere mentioning of it. And don't play the law of averages either. I don't drink an advertised soda just because some idiot twisted his ass in a knot off a snow covered mountain top.
So in reply, Why does Photoshop cost so much? Because they started the whole digital image editing movement and old bastards like me have been using it since it's inception. It was expensive then, why the hell should they change now? Not to mention, they have ominously LITTLE to do with the cost of motion medium expenses, once all the other garbage is added in.
So, stay in school and RESEARCH before you open the word processor...
theres allways one
