Study Says Women Are More Into Games Than Men |
A study done by the Consumer
Electronics Association shows that there are more women gamers than
males in the 25-34 age bracket. The average age of gamers at present
is 30.
The results of this study points to
the popularity of casual games as one of the main reasons why male gamers are
outnumbered by female gamers. Casual games like puzzle games and card
games appeal mostly to women, who, compared to men, are less likely to
play traditional console games. In the 25 to 34 age
bracket, 65 per cent of women in the group play video games while
only 35 per cent of men do so.
The study conducted by the CEA did not
specifically ask women gamers why they preferred casual games over
the traditional console games, but assumed that women are
attracted more to casual games because these are not very
competitive. Most of the casual games available are on Web portals, like
Yahoo! and Pogo.com.
Console hardware makers are considering
developing and including downloadable casual games and simpler titles
for those interested. This would allow them to cater also to “non-gamers” and/or the big percentage of women gamers.
Nintendo's Brain Age and Nintendogs are examples of games targeted at “non-gamers”
that have already been made available.

umm yeah right, this "study" is BS, and we all know it considering the experieces we have had in life, like 1% of girls like games.
That study is insane. Just look at your friends who play video games. What percentage of them are girls?

lmfao, you know that is BS. I have a GF that is Asian surprisngly, she only like a handful of games. Nintendogs (Nintendo DS), Harvest Moon (GBA), & DDR Extreme 2 (PS2 with Pads & Eye Toy) are the only games she is intrested in at all. Have a large Libary of titles as well as currently 6 Xbox 360 titles. She shows no intrest in any of em. Just those 3 lol. They most of been on some seriously strong imported smoke to come up with that kind of conclusion for a study like that.
I would hazzard a guess a huge percentage of those women playing games are playing free to play bingo and card games on gambling sites.
When I used to work for a gambling company a large percentage of users were women playing the free to play version.

OK. go back and *****ing read. Now, think for five seconds about wot you said. In this scenario, both you and your girlfriend play videogames. The survey isnt about 'who purchases a greater amount of game related goods and services' it is 'who does/doesnt play games' period. no 'but they must play these types/this amount of games'

You seem to have failed to notice that the article refers to ALL kinds of games, not just videogames... In that respect, it makes a lot of sense.
My wife and a bunch of her friends are into games. Just because a girl doesn't like video games, it does not mean she doesn't like games. The study said all games. My wife likes to tabletop roleplay, she likes RPGs on the PS2 and the PC, she likes Scrabble, Clue and a bunch of other board games. Most of our mutual female friends are into them too. One girl I know gets the RE games before I do. Another is obsessed with her DS. I know when we play group games they are the ones that really want to play and initiate it. Hell my sister is more obsessed with MMORPGs than I am.
I can see that girls like games too. Just dismissing this and saying it's BS proves that you didn't read it, and that maybe you don't know women as well as you think.

from the sounds of the statistics they can add just about any kind of game into it like solitaire, minesweeper, and the aformentioned bejeweled. The statistic is not talking about video games just any game be it chess or solitaire so long as it's being played on a console, pc, or other gaming device. I personally think that means more women play stupid mind numbing games like solitaire where men have better things to do than waste their time. Personal opinion sorry if it offends.
I know girls play games, both my sisters play console games like shadow of the colossus and Crash Team Racing but my I know plenty of college girls who when they get bored turn on minesweeper to pass the time and would rather die than try to play Halo.
They consider MSN games to be real games when they are no such thing, they are distractions, real games are where you can drive a veicle at 600MPH and slam it into a wall, or tear off the heads of your enemies in battle to smite them. games with gameplay, and occasionally storylines.
Even if this study was right, though it isn't, it only says people in that certain age group.

Sorry, I'd like to be a bit more opening minded, but you have to realize, a game that you can log on to some no-name website with a few flash games that will waste your time for about ten seconds, sorry, thats not a video game.
"My god!" The statistics may squeal, "Yes they are!" No. No they aren't. A video game is a game you go out and rent/buy, and actually put in a good amount of time on.
I personally think the stat takers haven't played video games much in their life, and no jack crap about video game culture in general. Sorry, but 5 second flash diversions DO NOT COUNT AS VIDEO GAMES.

1 out of 12 of the previous girlfriends that I had in the past approoved of my video games & comic books, and even played em...those days were bliss! The other 9 (my wife included) were totally against them...they would say that it made me look childish to be reading and playing those things, that it was time wasted, etc. etc. but hey, I never, ever put video games first, or for that matter, ANYTHING first before some good loving, so I don't understand what all the complaining was all about....I'm 27, and this basically sez women in my age range like to play video games more than us men...Were do they hide? Are they all married? Are they ugly? I'd really like to share my gaming with a young MILF...we really don't have to take higher than LEVEL 1 if you know what I mean, after all I am married... For all of you who don't know, statisticians work in the field of statistics. One basic principle of statistics is that you can manipulate the results easily. I very highly doubt more women play games than men, even in that age group. In fact, if I could have the sample data, I could probably disprove that this sample is only left to chance. The fact of the matter is, the general demographic of gamers IS, in fact, male. This is why you see these cases of "Girl gamer pride." in a predominantly male world of gamers. Absolutely unfounded, and left only to chance of their random sample (assuming it IS random.)

So to re-frase myself...my wife does enjoy her share of games, but she won't play the ones I really like (more mature titles like Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Syphon Filter, GTA, Street Fighter, etc...) because she see's those games as a waste of my time & hers too.
thing is, i manage to get even my mum to play videogames sometimes... that's eyetoy or dancing stage. simple, this study simply proves that games you can play for 5 mins and get nothing but plain 'yay i did it' out of it are more popular than hardcore ones.
mind you i'm happiest playing killer7, res4, ffx, mgs1/2/3... etc.

Its simple everyone...this study asked girls if they liked solitare/hearts/other stupid small games that come with computers and flash games on the internet, then marked them as a game player.

I'd say there's some faulty reporting. Though I would coneed that certain types of games appeal to women more than men, for sure.

RPGs like the homoerotic Kingdom hearts, 90% of the gamers playing that game have to be women in my opinion.
Part of the problem is how they define 'gamer' and 'video game'. I would not define Solitaire as a 'video game', nor an avid Solitaire player as a 'gamer'. For me, being a 'gamer' has a big connotation to it as more of a hardcore player. Playing CS:S once a month doesn't really constitute a gamer in my book. I also don't think that you can be a 'gamer' off of a 'casual game', especially in games like neopets or hearts.

I do not believe that. Most men do not vote that is why they think more women are into games than men and I do not agreed with them. Women and Men are the same equal civil rights and both are into games, that's it.

Wake up guys, it was bound to happen. We guys like games! That’s not going to change. And the only way women can hang with us is to learn to play themselves.
I know at least 5 women in there late 20's that play on a regular basis. Halo 2, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Oblivion, Sims, 2. They especially like the online gaming. Women love to talk. I've sat and watched my Girlfriend, gather gaming groupies like they were trading cards.
Xbox live has broke this gender barrier wide open. And a lot of them are hot. Don’t believe me! I bet there are more than a few women in your friends’ lists. The problem is Prick guys who try and scare women from playing, so they create a male avatar so they won’t get verbally assaulted. Men will prob. always dominate the ratio but women are just as into these games as we are. And it may not seem appropriate for women to play now but give it one more generation. And you’ll be fighting with your wife over who gets to use the HD TV with your 360, or P3 or whatever you all play.
You'll be surprised about how many girls you see/know that say they want nothing to do with video games. Yet about 80% of them play them like crazy. Its the truth. Ask some of those girls, go to their house, and I'll bet they have at least one system or some type of video game in their house and its not their brother's.
this is the biggest crock I've ever read! I've met like 100 girls in my 19 years of existence that have ever touched a video game. I guess if they're counting online popcap-esque games than it'll quadruple the amount of girls included. But I have never in my life heard any refer to themselves as a "gamer" as the article said if all they play is those dumb things. Even still more guys play games then girls.

to 44, I've met a lot of women that plays games, some of em are married too. My sister and her friends play games. Even the lan center I go to have women playing counter-strike and world of warcraft. But I do live in an asian community, and they're all asian so it might be different in a place with different demographics.
Face it, games aren't a fad anymore, its a trend.
Just one more study that shows men mature faster than females. At least it only takes them 30 years before they start to enjoy video games, as apposed to sex which usually happens when they are 40-45. Men apparently know where it's at around 8-12. :-P
Loves singstar, eyetoy puzzle games, mascot games (mario, sonic, crash, ect.) and other simple, non violent, happy fun games. They are still games, just with less adult themes.
One issue this raises is that the mature games that 'true games' enjoy are really not the kinds of games to expand the market. The videogame industry has not really grown over the years because hardcore games are all that are made. Perhaps the revolution really will expand the market.
