Study - one in every 12 young gamers show video game addiction

Kids playing video games - Image 1Dr. Douglas Gentile has released the findings for his latest study, which sought to observe and determine the presence of video game addiction in gamers aged 8-18 years. The result? One in every 12 young gamers show unmistakable signs of gaming addiction.

The study, entitled, "Pathological video game use among youth 8 to 18: A national study" made use of a sample of 1,178 American youngsters from the said age group. Dr. Gentile preferred not to use the word "addiction" since it's not even a proper medical term. But he did verify that pathological game use shows the same symptoms as that of "addiction" such as:
  • Lying to family and friends about video game usage
  • Using video games to escape from problems or bad feelings
  • Becoming restless or irritable when attempting to stop playing video games
  • Skipping homework in order to play video games
  • Doing poorly on a school assignment or test because they spent too much time on games.
So says Dr. Gentile in his study's abstract:

Pathological status significantly predicted poorer school performance even after controlling for sex, age, and weekly amount of video game play. These results confirm that pathological gaming can be measured reliably, that the construct demonstrates validity, and that it is not simply isomorphic with a high amount of play.

One in 12, huh? I personally thought that the number would be greater, but it's great news that the number isn't as big as I thought. How about you guys? Any of those symptoms sound familiar?

Here's an easier, less-scientific way to find out if you're hooked:

» 1 in 3..

Elementary aged children show signs of addiction to physical activities such as sports. Symptoms include...

Lying to family and friends about how often they engage in sports

Using sports and other physical activities to escape from problems or bad feelings

Becoming restless or irritable when not engaged in sports of physical activities

Skipping homework in order to play sports or practice their sport of choice

Doing poorly on a school assignment or test because they spent too much time playing or practicing their sport.

SHUT UP. You have no point, you're making up whatever suits your view about something you personally dislike.

That gave me a good chuckle. But hmm 1 in 12? Not a big number really. But wait does this study include Sexy Beach 3? Because I know plenty who are addicted to that game including myself.

» ya what a pointless study...That said...

» Cigar Games?

What the hell is wrong with them, it's like they are labelling Video Games alongside the other (supposed) bad things in life like drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. 20, no less than 10 years ago gaming was a sought after past time that people enjoyed together, now in 2009 they try and label it damaging to your health, and people can become "addicted". What real difference is there between them now?

» Gamers anonymous.

Imagine that lol. Have mandatory meetings to discuss gaming addiction. Half of them will probably need anger management. Put a few raging fanboys in there. One dude starts talking about how Zelda helped him relax when his parents starting fighting. Another busts out with "how could you play that crap?!" Dude is like ***** you and your Queerzone 2. *fight breaks out*

» I always skipped homework..

I always skipped homework but then I could tell you some other non-gamers would too. I suppose they got eye drops to hide evidence of their well hidden addiiction to games. So next time you see somebody in class say they lost their homework, harass them and tell everyone about their obvious game addiction.

@*****bandit

Maybe it's cuz I dled a gamesave with all the characters cleared, I don't spend too much time on that game. I only spend about 30-40 minutes and then I'm 'done' with it. Good game though

» ...

Replace Zelda with Halo in that story and you'll know one of them will die.

by Digitus - 2009-04-20 12:09
» Wow

You can apply that list to just about anything people do for recreation and make it seem like someone is addicted. I guess I'm addicted to reading novels aside from the lie to people part you can apply all of that to how much I read, but is reading a bad thing? This kind of thing only flies because video games are always in the public eye so if you attach the words "study on" and "video games" you get instant media success/coverage. I guess I'm addicted to video games, reading, movies, drawing, friends, and television then because I love to engage in all of those to escape a bad mood (as opposed to sitting and sulking about it?)

» As a kid I was an addict

From the time I got home from school to the time I went to bed I played video games.

Now I'm in my 20's and I'm not as interested in gaming anymore. Still love collecting games and talking about them, but I don't play them as much as I did before.

Since I was so addicted to video games, I don't really don't have any other interests, so kindof sucks.

» the number of gaming addicts increases

as we grow up, with a peak time during college (yes, i'm one of them addicts) and drops-off when starting work (sort-of a sigmoid curve, or S-curve).

although i do know a few of my mates that still gets addicted to gaming even when working and still have time for social meetings and stuffs, so it's not all bad for gaming addicts.

by yoshi314 - 2009-04-20 18:50
» only 1 out of 12?

1/12 is around 8%, so it seems pretty high.

but i thought that it would be as high as ~20-30%

by PsychoSonic - 2009-04-21 01:51
» hmm

» addiction not a proper medical term???? wtf....get a clue man!

is he even a proper doctor? addiction is a proper medical term....lol, get a clue dude!

» The word addict

Is thrown around way too loosely among the ill informed or ignorant. Doing something in excess does not make someone an addict. Needing to and sometimes having withdrawal symptoms if you don't, does. If someone doesn't play a game and that then makes them physically ill or causes them extreme discomfort then they are an addict. If someone just does something often it makes them an enthusiast, if anything. But nowadays it doesn't matter, right now video games are the big controversy and we wont see an end to these "studies" until the next big thing comes around. Remember when the news was all over scooters when the Razor got really popular? I bet once we get...hoverboards...or something new for kids to love, video games will take a back seat if only for a while.
