Straight PSP Ports can work, says Sony

Ironman PSP - Image 1The idea of porting games from the console into a handheld like the PSP is not really a very popular one. Sony itself admits that this notion was a failed one when they first started trying it with early PSPs.

However, given the relative successes of the ported version of games like "Transformers (DS, PC, PSP, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360) and Iron Man (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, DS, and PSP)," John Koller, the head of hardware marketing at SCEA, says that conventional wisdom on direct ports doesn't seem to hold if the franchise is big enough.

The NPD Group reported that the PSP version of Transformers and Iron Man sold 442,000 and 242,000 copies respectively. Sony felt this counts as a success given the games' failed console counterparts.

So what does this all mean? According to Koller, we should expect a lot more big franchise games for the PSP coming in 2009. The announcements will be coming soon.

dude, all i got from this was that yes it failed, it still fails, but sony realized(or already knew) that people are so stupid that they will still buy something just for the name even though the actually product is total garbage.thanks to people like those big companies dont bother on making GOOD games, cause they know they can make *****, and people will still buy it. retards. i played transformers for the psp and the ps2 and ps3. 1. they are not the same game at all. 2.the ps2 and ps3 versions were the best, actually kinda fun, even though overall the game was meh. 3. not only did the graphics(if they wanna call it that, i'd call it lines on paper) totally SUCK, but the gameplay sucked and the story sucked, for the psp version. i know someone who beat it in one day and he didnt even paly it that long.

in conclusion(lmao ), I hate you sony :)

I understand straight ports as having more awesome PS2 games on my psp. And that would be unbelievable awesome cause that's kinda what I want.

But mentioning iron man and transformers, those are awful movie games. I hope they aren't thinking on just porting that kind of games.

Give us Devil may cry, Resident Evil, BLACK, a Killzone FPS, Burnout Revenge, Shadow of the Colossus, Tekken 6, etc.

You hate sony for making money of people who are stupid that will eventually buy anything with a label on it? Sounds to me like they're smart at doing it. And is it their fault that you buy it?

When Sony says "ports." These games were all multiconsole releases and all came out at the same time. They use port since the higher quality games are obviously those of the console games.

Anyways. I really don't see a problem with multiconsole games. I'd rather not get anymore ports. When I say ports, I don't mean something that came out half a year ago and is going to the PSP. I'm talking about games that came out 5 years ago and that I most likely own and comes out on the PSP(which is the case with just about every PSP or remake that has came out aside from a small few.)

Enough with the *****ty games. I mean, come on, you know if your game sucks when your developing it...

Just port the old goddamn games!

God of War 1

God of War 2

Burnout 3, Revenge

Shadow of the Colossus

Also they should re-make all the successful games in 333MHz quality.

Tekken DR

Killzone Liberation

They really should just port the entire MGS series, from 1 to 4.

That would be a nice back to back marathon on the go!

Ironman and Transformers were successes?

That's sad. Really sad.

There are so great games on the PSP that sell *****ty because they are not made from Uber-sucky movies or not overhyped.

And then bad games sell because of that reasons.

Another proof that people buy every piece of ***** as long it has a good name on it. It pisses me of how stupid mankind can be....

# Movie Gamesicypsp 2008-12-02 02:43
Everyone knows that now-a-days if you make a game based off of a movie it will automatically suck! I mean seriously ironman and transformesrs those crappy Disney movie games Drake and Josh??? All those games SUCK. Mann those dont even count as games!!! Its a discrace!!! Sadly the people who make those games act like they dont know they suck.

But like back in tha day when they made games based off of moveies they were pretty good. Seriously i sometimes play them, for example Toy Story for sega genesis and Lion King and Aladdin. Classics.

Seriously tho todays kids do not know what they are missing.

i agree, back in the day i used to play toy story for the PC and it was great, and i still think it is. But now it is a guarantee that if the game is based off of a movie it is terrible.

Only problem are those games' sizes. Shadow of the Colossus is 3.64GB, and I'm pretty sure GoW2 won't fit on a DVD5 (so over 4.7GB), the first one is probably around the same size.

If PSP ever got PS2 games working on it, the best emualted game is Final Fantasy X, which is 4.10GB (ouch!).
