When you're talking about Square Enix in a global scale, there's no doubting that they've managed to rake in huge amounts of sales for all their franchises. Final Fantasy? Kingdom Hearts? And of course, the more recently acquired Tomb Raider? How do they all stack up against each other?

The video game giant has revealed figures of their lifetime sales for each of their franchises. Unsurprisingly, Final Fantasy is right on top with a staggering lead. Their report also includes some big franchises they've acquired from Eidos Interactive, namely Tomb Raider and Hitman.

Here's the top five in order of copies sold:
  • Final Fantasy: 85 million
  • Dragon Quest: 47 million
  • Tomb Raider: 30 million
  • Kingdom Hearts: 12 million
  • Hitman: 8 million
From various releases and remakes of the same game (across different platforms and across console generations, even), to handheld spinoffs and downloadable titles for the iPhone, it's not a surprise that Square Enix is one to milk their franchises with so many iterations. Hence the numbers by the millions.

Seeing this list makes me wonder... how many copies has the Metal Gear franchise sold in its lifetime? What about the Grand Theft Auto series? And Call of Duty?

» Yup

That would definitely be interesting to see. Unfortunately, if you check the source of the article, you'll see that Square Enix's report only shows the breakdown for Tomb Raider games and the other Eidos franchises.

» LMAO!

I love how they JUST bought the rights to the TR/HM games and now they list them as if they created the series and sold all of those copies.

SE = tars.

» I think they just want people to see how popular each series is

Meaning that if Square-Enix makes another Tomb Raider, then other people would buy into it because how many sales they have.

I can guarantee with the "Square" logo, everything Eidos will now sell a ton. It's stupid how biased most of the video game fanbase, atleast in the US, is. When Squaresoft and Enix weren't merged, hardly anyone knew about Dragon Warrior and alot of those that did would end up bashing the series. After the Square-Enix merger though, it's like everyone had a change of heart and praises the entire series just because it has the Square logo on it.

I've been a Dragon Warrior fan since the NES, but damn. What a bunch of *****ing hypocrites everyone else is. Most of them.

» yea your right

i did the same thing with killzone 2 i got into all the hype and was oh cool guerilla made it so it must be good. Gameplay wise it was ok for a shooter but the graphics were amazing but not better than MGS4 that took my breath away. Ended up selling killzone 2 to buy a resident evil 5 and it was worth it.

Interesting Fact: The franchise that has sold the most videogames is the Pokemon franchise, selling over 200 million videogames.

To be honest I don't like any of the franchises on that list. I have a lil fondness for Final Fantasy VI (or III as it was on the US version I owned) but more so for the charming characters than anything else.

» yeah..

but remember there has been around 30 pokemon games released. At least I know I own like 10 of them (red, blue, yellow, gold, silver, diamond, ruby, pokemon stadium 1, 2, and a pikachu game with a microphone for the n64) and this are the older games (none after 2000 except ruby, and the franchise started in 1995). Also, pokemon red and blue are 2 of the most sold games in history, I mean, which gamer who had a GBC doesn't have them?
