Square Enix President talks about remakes |
Ó
We've been seeing a lot of remakes lately, and they're actually quite welcome. For publishers, it's a gold mine - they're low risk, but have high returns. For veteran gamers, playing a classic in souped up engines is a great experience. For new gamers, they get to appreciate the old games in their remade glory. With the current situation of the gaming industry - lay-offs and realignments here and there - Square Enix president Yoichi Wada explains how there came to be a remake boom. "The price of games is high, and consumers tend to be wary of buying games they are unfamiliar with," he points out. With unfamiliarity, gamers would be inclined to buying remakes of successful, tried-and-tested titles, as opposed to taking a gamble at a new one.
Square-Enix and remakes, huh? Everyone's been talking about one particular remake from them for years. But I'm not gonna say it! I'm not getting my (or anyone else's for that matter) hopes up! Your thoughts?

For seven years it's been my fantasy to play a remake of a SquareSoft er..Square-Enix classic. Finally my fantasy appears to soon become a reality!
I too will not mention the title I long for! LOL
Bring it on Yoichi!!!!!
To be honest I'm looking more forward to the remake of "insert franchise title here" "(insert sequel # here) - 1". I think the jump from 2D to HD-3D(or even normal 3D on ds or something) beats the jump from crap 3D to HD any day.
That, and I enjoyed the story more.
FFVII
We do not speak of it.
Meh, give us a 3D port of FFVI for the DS and maybe port FFX for the PSP (never had a PS2) and I'll be happy.
Let 7 die. It still is an amazing game, first played it myself on PSP a year ago. But if you were to remake it I'm sure you'd put that *****ty slot-machine style random battle system from Crisis Core and likely break the feel of the original.
While I can appreciate the PSP...I have 2 of them. I played the ported versions of FF1 & FF2 as well as crisis core on them. I think that games like FFVII are diminished when played on a PSP. The games were meant to be played on a TV sized screen and a remake of any of those classics would look great on a large screen with souped up graphics and sound.
Maybe people like me who are old enough to have played all of these classics when they first came out are a little biased. I loved those games then and still do. For younger folks these games are the past, have little appeal and mostly are a curiosity, so I understand why there may be limited excitement about a remake. For old guys like me though it's a totally different story. We want them and trust me when you get old you'll want remakes of the games you played in your youth.
The current remakes have really made the idea of porting a classic a successful idea. With the upcoming remake of Chrono Trigger for the DS.. I can't help but think that they aren't really doing much to make it a TRUE remake. Just a Port. Bionic Commando Rearmed would have been a perfect fit for handhelds.. but we haven't and most likely NOT see it. The same goes or Megaman 9. It's awesome to see it on XBL and PSN.. but I still believe that if it were released on handhelds it would have been as if not more successful. There is one game that I would love to see remade ... [Who's name should not me mentioned] But maybe just maybe we'll see or hear something in the near future. Either way.. it's great to see the new gen getting a fix for the old skool! But Seriously.. what's next?
I think you forgot an extra "I"
Square-Enix should better be done it or started it else. I don't know if I'm gonna lived when that day comes. The day when [that which should not be mentioned] be remade cause it would just be simply fantabuloustic awesome. haha
So better be started remaking it cuz most of us won't live that long you know. Also, the original developers. haha. j/k To make the story simple, life is short and so are yours. haha. Remake on the next-gen or even the next-next-gen would be beyond awesomeness. imagine that!
Square Enix should do a Remake of FF7 for all 3 platforms PC PS3 and 360 since they teamed up with MS grr But still seeing it on the PC would be FREAKING AWSOME!
FF7 was originally released for PC and PSX. Whenever I feel like playing FF7, I just play the original. Playing it on the PC through an emulator or on the PS3 gives you "next-genish" graphics.
The problem with a remake for me is that Square-Enix may add some things here and there that weren't in the original at all. God forbid that they were to change up the story.
If they do change anything I would hope only things like minigames, vehicles, summons, and maybe chocobos.
OP is a *****. kthx bai.
I liked both FFVII and FFVIII. They are both great games with great stories that I played the ***** out of. I would buy both again if the were in a worthy remake.
If the new gen gamers out there haven't played the old classic Final Fantasy games then I hope they read what we are posting and go out and get them. At the time a lot of what was done was revolutionary although the graphics are dated now but the stories still hold up very well. If people are not into the old FF games because of the graphics I urge them to play them because the stories are so awesome and gripping! The stories in these games rival many stories in the best movies and novels and if the new generation of gamers were able to play them, they would be greater hits that would be all over the news do popularity because they are so addicting. I hope Square gets serious and remake these with the best technology they deserve just like companies do today with many old movies they release on Blu-ray. These games need to be well planned on the remakes for the proper execution of all the fine points that make these games awesome. Please Square-Enix, if you are reading these posts, PLEASE REMAKE THE CLASSIC FINAL FANTASY GAMES IN WORTHY HD GLORY!!! It's been awhile and their time has come.
i can rant on and on about the things said above all have there own preferences. To me the remake(s) square must make begin with c,f,v and x. keeping a genera alive is amongst the deluge of technology can at times seem fruitless and futile. there probably is demand for remakes and calls to venture into a new franchise. squeenix needs to do only one thing to advance in the industry and that is simply to put the play back in the Game. cg ewwy gooy eye candy can cause seizures. though good plot twists may always cause the heart strings to get tugged.
Hey Sage3k as long as you have a wifi connection you can play Bionic Commando on the PSP through remote play. Not sure if Megaman 9 has that feature.
I think it's a smart thing to say, but honestly I don't believe this is the main reason for the constant trend of remakes recently. To me it's just laziness. Why put forth time and money to come up with an actual new idea, something well designed and original when you can just remake something that already exists with current technology. It's the easy way out, and don't get me wrong, I love seeing some great classics remade, but its getting too redundant.
New game ideas are too far and few between these days. All of a sudden we live in a world of sequels and remakes, and most of them are mediocre at best. Companies need to learn how to develop new titles and stories rather than recycling old ones with some new graphics and an extra dungeon, or worse just a port that turns your favorite classic game into a 40 dollar piece of plastic that makes it compatible in a new system.
One of the things that gets me most is the greed of companies like square that throw out cease and desist letters to fans with heart remaking a game they loved, just so they can come out with a direct port later on. Chrono Trigger is the best example of this. I mean, I could load a modded rom of CT onto an R4 with an added dungeon and call it a 40 dollar game. This is basically what their doing.
I'm just kind of fed up with the gaming industry lately, so I'm letting off a bit of steam here. It's just annoying seeing once great companies collapse into themselves with greed and unimaginative ideas. Go back to the days of games like Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger, or Xenogears and Brave Fencer Musashi. All amazing original games that when on to spore some of the worst sequels to date. Also, stop using graphics for the canon of a good RPG, story should be the strongest element. Hell, just make a new 2d rpg for ds, it would be better than a port/remake/sequel or some new game with recycled ideas and crazy 3d battle systems.
Lol, "let 7 die"? I mean yeah, it's KINDA tiring seeing games made from the FFVII characters. But look how good they did with Zack's story! Though Vincent's DOC game story mode was not really to my liking I DID enjoy playing it to see the movie cg scenes. ANY MONEY BET that Square Enix will try to make games for ALL of the FF7 characters before they "let 7 die". I want them to work on reviving FFFVI (FFIII in japan) so that everyone can be introduced to characters like Locke, Terra, Celes, Sabin and finally know who the "Funny looking clown", Kefka in the back cover of Final Fantasy Dissisia really came from!
Changing the subject, it's GREAT they they're making REMAKES! Hironobu Sakaguchi made TONS of games that never made it overseas. Yeah, games like Secret of mana + Chrono Trigger were GREAT but we were only introduced to those great classics.
I hope that we finally get the chance to play them as they remake them!
Xenogears really needs to be remade especially after being screwed over with half of the second disc being cut out.
Even it were just released PSN/XBLA/WiiWare I'd be happy.
And don't say it'd be too big for Wii, the only reason it was on 3 discs was because of the .wav audio on CD's, and the uncompressed FMV's...size could be lowered significantly.
Would also be a good way for gamers young and old of all consoles to play it.
It'd be cool if they redid FF7 with Crisis Core gameplay.
For the time being, i just hope they do a new sequel for Chrono series.. i happy that they did port the chrono trigger to ds, at least they doesnt leave out the franchise.. i hope they will consider releasing sequel for chrono cross..
And id love to see the FF6 remake, the storyline is marvellous, with the updated graphic and release it on PSP, the game would be very successful.
Now that they make the dissidia game, i dont think its impossible to "3D" the characters from classic FF titles
