Thanks to tipster zygimantux, we got hold of information that Namco Bandai's Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny will indeed be requiring OFW 5.55. Still hoping this is just fake news? Check out the screenshot below. That should be as good as absolute confirmation.

Why am I not surprised?
by sage3k - 2009-08-27 23:01:43
yea...

I saw this coming, but maybe we'll get lucky and see a release soon enough!
by dinkelstefan - 2009-08-28 00:16:12
what

so how am i suposed to play this game as an iso/cso now?
by papajag - 2009-08-28 00:47:40
I have a question...

Will erasing the update folder bypass the requirement?
by TalesXIII - 2009-08-28 00:57:50
even dark_alex has left theres always hope...

update to 5.50 GEN-B and u should be fine... i tested it on 5.50 GEN-B and it works!
by Boner_Ville - 2009-08-28 01:35:38
???

so this wont run on a 5.00m33-6?? sucks...dont lose hope yet =]
by rathalos - 2009-08-28 02:05:26
No

m33 bypasses the version check stuff but if you updated create a backup of your saves cuz they will go corrupt
by shanky887614 - 2009-08-28 03:23:09
dont forget

dont forget that there is a plugin that can fake your firmware version and you could just change the file in the flah to get arround it and with custom firmware you can either bypass it ir remove the check alltogether think of the update lock where you hold a button if your battery is below a certain amount to do it when on ofw it wont let you do that we can simply do something similar with this game or just emulate the firmware through homebrew
by nate443556 - 2009-08-28 04:18:08
Also,

I am running 5.03 MHU on my PSP 3000 and I'm playing Dissidia right now. It wouldn't let me play the demo though haha.
by NGUYEN - 2009-08-28 05:15:57
help!!!

i am running 5.50 gen-b but nothing works do you need to do something in recovery mode to let it work?
by WiiRolled - 2009-08-28 06:25:10
Uhm

It's easy. Mount your Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny UMD, dump it onto your memory stick (there are several tools capable of doing this), then use the "NP Decryptor" and you'll be able to play the game on all CFWs, even on 5.00 M33
by redx350 - 2009-08-28 07:24:01
what

NP decrypter can't read .iso dumps only PBP
by Hoshizora - 2009-08-28 08:36:15
software used?

Anybody can advice what software was used in the screenshot?
by WiiRolled - 2009-08-28 08:36:34
True

True
by hush404 - 2009-08-28 08:38:07
lol

maybe soon tars will have to go buy the games instead of downloading :P
by Rolen47 - 2009-08-28 09:12:14
Wrong

5.55 games are special. They're EBOOT.BIN (main game executable) is encrypted differently. It doesn't work on ANY CFW.
by Rolen47 - 2009-08-28 09:14:55
Re:

No. The problem is EBOOT.BIN cannot be decrypted and loaded by any firmware lower than 5.55.
by Rolen47 - 2009-08-28 09:33:45
Re:

That's UMDGEN 4.00
by SonicTH - 2009-08-28 09:41:58
Not like it matters

Custom Firmware lockouts are still a problem. Buying the UMD won't help. Playing one game is fine but sacrificing all my emulated systems is not worth it.
by SonicTH - 2009-08-28 09:47:07
Show me something more

"update to 5.50 GEN-B and u should be fine... i tested it on 5.50 GEN-B and it works!" Sorry, I'm not convinced. I'm going to need more proof to the point.
by Elric - 2009-08-28 10:19:10
This sucks

I'm basically never going to be able to buy another new game again for my PSP since I am not ditching CFW any time soon. I've really been looking forward to getting LBP and the new MGS among others so this is kind of heartbreaking... And before the holier than thou guys chime in, i BUY my games but I like ripping them to CSO and putting 10 or 11 on a memory stick, plus PS1 games (which I also already own and do not want to rebuy on PS Store) and the Genesis and SNES stuff! And the utilities and the freeware ports, etc. The PSP is amazing with CFW.

to TalesXIII

"update to 5.50 GEN-B and u should be fine... i tested it on 5.50 GEN-B and it works! " :| GEN fanboy trying to get people to use GEN, I switched to 5.50 GEN-B and it does not work.
by Brendan_McCoy - 2009-08-28 12:12:56
nope

That doesn't work. Please know what you're talking about before you post :|
by DCJoeDog - 2009-08-28 13:40:38
Just a suggestion

Couldn't you just change your version.txt file to 5.55, and then turn on the version option int he recovery menu? I don't have this game so I can't test it, but the thought popped into my head while reading this story.
by Brendan_McCoy - 2009-08-28 20:06:51
nope

That's not how it works at all. The EBOOT.BIN on the newer games (such as Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny) can only be launched by the more recent OFW, it's not any sort of check that is preventing it.
by SonicTH - 2009-08-29 05:53:30
Sorry

Doesn't work that way. We need a custom Firmware 5.55, it's just that simple. Once we have it we don't even know if we'll need a patch to circumvent any custom Firmware RAM checks inside the game either.
by DCJoeDog - 2009-08-30 09:30:35
ok

gotcha, I didn't know the protection was so severe. Oh well. Just wait for DAX to hack a new CFW, I can wait until then, not some rabid pirate that can't wait for his fix. LOL
by SonicTH - 2009-08-30 09:50:37
They aren't wrong!

Let me say this: anyone who said GEN-B works is NOT LYING. The game will actually work inside Firmware 5.50 GEN-B if you enable "Use Boot.BIN" in the Recovery Menu. Here's the catch: it ONLY will work on a PSP-1000. If you have a PSP-2000, enabling this option does nothing for some reason. So I retract any statement I said about anyone lying, it's just only partly true.
by Mikagami-sempai - 2009-08-30 11:05:52
Awesome !!

Wow that's some seriously good news !! But could you please tell me a bit more about the advanced config (or any other parameters for that matter) in the Recovery Menu ? Because right now now I'm like this: PSP-1000 CFW 5.50 GEN-B Use BOOT.BIN "enabled" And I still get the very heartbreaking message "Game cannot be launched" :'-( Anything you could tell me (and probably some others on this vast internet) to make it work would be fantastic ! Thanks in advance
by SonicTH - 2009-08-30 15:31:08
Another option

Toggle the "Plain Modules" option under Advanced as well. I didn't include that because I wasn't sure. If that doesn't work, I may have gotten some bum info but as you can see in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v+lrbYi1Ewzxc There is some way to make it work. It could even be the version you're running (supposedly the European version is different somehow).
by Mikagami-sempai - 2009-08-30 17:55:31
It DOES work :-)

Thanks a bunch !! Works perfectly but as you said only the EUR version of the game does, well as long as it features the original JAP voices I'm happy ! Well then, I shall now go kick Kratos all the way down to hell if you will excuse me.
by oxfordsdon - 2009-08-30 20:46:49
yay it does as well!

Thx for lettin us know, hopefully enabling BOOT.bin will work with the over games that need 5.55 fw btw the new character is even worse than voldo!
by irwintorres727 - 2009-08-31 21:57:00
dammit

now i HAVE to get a 3k. how else am i gonna play GT? my 1k is 5.00 m33-6, and now that dark alex is gone its gonna stay that way.
by Taigon - 2009-09-01 02:34:39
Actually

Dark_Alex hasn't left the PSP scene, the forums were just shut down due to them being expensive. And Soul Caibur does work, but you'll need the following: PSP-1000 CFW 5.50 GEN-B From Recovery Mode: Advanced -> Advanced configuration -> Plain modules enabled and Execute BOOT.BIN enabled Now I know SonicTH said this already, but I just wanted to make things clear. Also, I don't know about the US version, since I tested this using the EU version.
by SonicTH - 2009-09-01 08:18:19
Full fix

There is a ripkit available now to make the European version work with no problems on any PSP. Get to it. Don't want to incur any trouble by posting a link but a Google search should be productive.
by markjc1979 - 2009-09-01 09:14:18
full fix

Hey Sonic if i upgrade to CFW 5.50 gen-B will i lose any of my emus. im running on 5.00 m33-6 rite now, i have the Euro ver of Soul Calibur and i have the jumping numbers. i would really like to play this game but not at the expense of my other emu games. please let me kno. thanx.
by SonicTH - 2009-09-01 10:26:13
No

You don't. I updated mine and everything still seems to work. But you don't have to update to 5.50 to run this game. The PARAM.SFO inside the ISO says that the European version specifically is designed to be run on 5.00, meaning even 5.00 M33-6 users can play the game.
by markjc1979 - 2009-09-02 06:38:01
jumping numbers

so how do i get around the jumping numbers when i go to play it. is there a setting i need to change in the recovery menu? i'm confused.
by pissteeth - 2009-09-02 10:00:08
it's working on my M33-6

you just need to download the ripkit to fix the iso. Works on any model PSP.
by markjc1979 - 2009-09-02 12:27:24
where can i go to get it?

can u send me a link?
by zackfair_13 - 2009-09-02 17:55:16
why..

can i play this on my psp, even still running 5.00m33-6?
