Sony's game division loses money, but not as much as last year - Image 1

Last year, Sony's gaming division saw a huge operating loss that cost them JPÂ¥ 232 billion (US$ 2.2 billion). This year, Sony's overall profit increased but they're posting another loss with their gaming division, although the amount is considerably better than last year's.

Reuters reports that Sony saw its operating loss shrink by about JPÂ¥ 100 billion (US$ 948,000). This still leaves them with a JPÂ¥ 132 billion loss (US$ 1.52 billion), but that's still a big jump from last year.  It's likely only a matter of time before we see that amount turn around. Sony's had a good start to 2008, having outsold the Xbox 360 for both January and February.

Sony on the whole saw an operating profit of US$ 3.6 billion. Although they missed their own forecast, their profit still increased fivefold. The increase is attributed to strong sales of digital cameras.

» Why should we?

I, like most gamers, don't work for Sony. I just play games. Let Sony deal with their own problems. I've got enough to deal with without keeping track of Sony's funds.

Frankly, unless their going out of business, I see no reason why I should care.

» Hmm

I for one care, being a big fan of sonys previous consoles and now the ps3. I think this will be the year that turns things round for Sony. Especially once MGS4 comes out, and later Gran Turismo 5.

Its like Sega, When they shut down with making no hardware does not make me stop playing games so why should I care?

I still love sega even if they are done. Its not going to stop our games from not playing.

» so?

Did sony make their target of selling 11 million ps3 by March or what?

by Mister Common Sense - 2008-05-05 03:53
» How about that?

Sony's gaming division loses $1,500,000,000 a year, mostly due to selling PS3s for a loss. Nice of them to go into debt to give consumers a great deal on a powerful console. The PS3 also has plenty of quality third party software to back it up.

Nintendo makes $2,500,000,000 a year selling overpriced obsolete hardware and developing 3-5 mediocre games per year.

It should be obvious which company is screwing over its customers.

» Mr. Common Douche Bag

It's amazing how you always LOVE to bring your douche bag Nintendo comments on articles that have nothing to do with Nintendo. Is this how you get your pee-pee hard?
