Sony works on PSP deals and new image

Sony Computer Entertainment hopes to boost PSP sales. Analysts are expecting a package of new PSP online services to be revealed in the middle of March of this year. Also, analysts are expecting a tie-up with a major ISP like Yahoo!.

Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony's chief financial officer, told the Financial Times that the games division has to get its act together if it wants to meet the goals set by Sir Howard Stringer. If you'll remember, Stringer is Sony Corporation of America's Chairman and CEO, and he said that Sony plans to have a profit margin of 5% by the end of this fiscal year. This means the PS3 has to break even by the end of the year and the PSP has to start making lots of money.

Analysts think Sony's action plan is this:

To promote the PSP as a more user-friendly device capable of downloading films, television shows, and back-catalogue PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. The changes could allow users to download games and other content anywhere the PSP can be connected to a WiFi network.

Now you see why Sony might tie up with a company like Yahoo!. Sony needs to get more mainstream users interested in buying PSPs and downloading games and other content.

However, the source did not say how much PSP owners will have to pay in order to have access to the new online services (i.e., will the new online services they'll reveal in March be free?). As homebrew fans, that's one thing we really want to hear more about because PSP homebrew already gives us content at a low price (i.e., fun for free, PSP tools and apps for free), so Sony's downloadable content will have to be high-quality content at reasonably low prices.

Finally, we'd like to add that we think the "Find Me" TV spots (also at Sony's official site) are a good step in getting mainstream non-hardcore-gamers interested in the PSP.

But it can't do anything like that, except maybe the PS1 part. Everything else either is false or doesn't work like advertised.

Did anyone else find it a bit misleading that in the ad they show someone apparently watching a movie in full screen resolution when Sony has made that impossible to do on the device? The only way is with homebrew, which Sony is fighting tooth and nail to keep up from using.

Umm.. yes, yes you can. it's called a UMD format movie.

besides... can you actually count the pixels on the screen (in the tv spot)? Using the stock player, I can play any size video ay a lower resolution in fullscreen. it's called stretch.

I understand what you're getting at, but on a technicality, you, sir, are incorrect.

Wow!! If the PSP can play PS2 games it would be amazing!! Is it possible? It must be. My question is who actually said the quote on the PS2 games? In the article it says "analysts" not a Sony rep. They could be way off. By the way, where is that N64 emulator!!

The "Find Me" CMs were terrible. It's a gaming system with additional functionalities , not a multimedia device with optional gaming capabilities. It needs to sell games, not just the handhelds so that it can hold free photos.

Sony needs to sign more deals with publishers to release some killer games on the PSP. Include more support for infrastructure online games. Open up the PlayStation Store to PSP owners without the need of a PS3. They could also release a PSP2 next year with an improved battery, UMD reader, 512MB~1GB internal flash, slightly smaller screen to shrink the system, etc.

The psp is more powerful than a PS1 but its stretching to come close to PS2 graphics. Can it come close, yes, is it hardware capable of exact emualtion, no. If it were ports would not take that long, they have to be reworked to try and look as good as the original (see teken, impressive). However many of the original PS2 games didnt take advantage of the power as most of todays top games do, so some of the earlier hits will probably was ashore as the psp could match those graphics.

But as many of you have arleady stated, the PSP is first and formost a gaming system. I bought mine because i liked the launch line up, not for movies or music. I use those functions quite a bit now, but i still play tons of games on it(i do a lot of importing, our market is always dry or lame). They need to stop dinking around, put out a better battery, make the sony online store avalibale to all PSP owners not just PS3, and make sure we can get any damn game we want from it. The japanese store looks a 100x better than ours, i want R-type leo damn it.

Better battery, Full resolution, Sony store full access, More great games(dual analog is a remake, im thinking about right now). Take notes people there will be a quiz later

It can't be done full-speed. The PSP doesn't have a large enough RAM to hold the cart rom, and thusly can't emulate the N64 properly. Now, someone could: a. add more RAM to a PSP through some modification, or b. wait for the PSP2. Otherwise, it's not going to happen.

The original psp could not run ps2 games but if you email me i will give you a link to my psp1.5.

specs are:

384 mb ram

4 gb add on hard drive

twice as powerful processor

4x3 inch screen

this will be able to play older ps2 games. I can play most isos but newer games like rockstar's bully dont work.

PSP cpu is too weak to emulate the PS2, ever.

Those ads are rediculous. Whenever I see one, Im left wondering what the hell sony is thinking right now. I mean who is actually going to buy a psp to store photos on, when you can get a standalone media device (with built in storage) of better quality for cheaper.

The playstation tag is synonymous with games, and that's what most people are going to buy one for. Theres some good ones out there, IMO they should really focus more on that aspect, and get off this multimedia kick.

just because its not there yet doesnt mean its never going to happen. the n64 emulator was unheard of back in the day and yet it was released. ps1 emulation was speculation not too long ago...

Don't underestimate the cpu potential of the PSP ;)

sorry i forgot to mention in my last post: ps2 titles can be ported to the psp instead of being emulated. i think that is what sony is aiming at...

Yeah that would be cool, but I will confidently say, EMULATING the PS2 on psp (where it's actually playable) is impossible. Even sony couldn't do such a thing. It makes me laugh that people think it's possible. I mean, even the PC has enough trouble emulating the PS2. You need to have high specs for it work well. The psp is just not powerful enough. So let it rest everyone.

I'll give you props on the RAM upgrade (if it's true) but even a 666MHz CPU wouldn't come close to supporting a playable PS2 emulator.

Jeez, take it easy! They weren't worshipping the commercials, just saying that they are a "good step"! Which I agree with; it's a great improvement over the talking rats & dustballs...or those thumb puppets...*shudder*

I don't understand why the fk this sony *****s don't use their fking head. it is extremely simple for sony to have the psp with tv output like a s-video out but no this fking idiots dont want the psp to be the most sell out device.

gay gay gay gay gay gay

why the fk didnt they add a more powerful cpu to the psp and more ram???? is cheap chit the price diff would be none

since a 800mhz and a 300mhz cpu is the same price.

and more ram sht sony ppl are so fking gay.

and what the hell are they waiting with the fking gps?

alot of ppl would buy the psp just for the gps.

plus wtf why are psp owner not allow to access the playstation online sht?????? god sony is gay. think about how many psp sony would have bee selling if they added all the things the psp is made for. psp would be sold out all over the world but noooo sony has to be gay and make us wait like if they were the only company in the world.

ps1 games for psp thats alot of games to add more to the psp.

Another problem would be the size of the PS2 discs. Disc images can be upwards to 4-8GB per disc (single to dual layer). They'd have to impliment some uber compression and decompression techniques to get them to play on even 4-8GB memory sticks... unless they do happen to come out with PSPs with gigantic in size, but small and compact HDDs built in. I'd image that'd be a bit pricy.
