Sony wants you to know: more than 50 million PSP units sold worldwide |

Sony just sent out a press release to let everyone know: since the first ever PSP was sold in December of 2004 in Japan, there have been more than 50 million PSP units sold worldwide (that includes all three systems, mind you) since January of 2009.
On the software side of things, there's currently more 2,000 UMD games released in the market, and more than 200 million sell-in units sold worldwide.
If numbers don't impress you, then let's just say that's a lot of frakkin PSPs out there. Let's hope devs pay attention and make more games for the handheld.
Thanks to Anthony Severino for the tip!

Now if only the PS3 sales were so good....

Ever notice that the majority of PSP owners you see are little kids? Little kids who have modded systems, yeah, and guess what, they're graphic whores.
The main selling point of the DS back in 2005 was that the PSP was way too *****ing expensive. Who wants to pay $250 for a handheld? Especially one that had ***** for a launch library.

They're called game cards. Nintendo picked up on this a long time ago.

No. I've never seen a kid with a PSP. It's ALWAYS adults.

PSP had the best launch of any system ever. 25 games? No console ever had that many. It was even the first system ever to have online multiplayer at launch. Fricken amazing. PSP was so awesome even at launch I'd have bought one if it had no games.
DS does not appeal to everyone. Most people see it as too kiddy

Sony should never drop UMD, it's the most innovative thing to happen to a handheld in decades

The overwhelming majority of PS2 games were cack, yet it had more highly rated games than the other systems. Low rated games DO NOT AFFECT how good the better games are.
And the DS has more higher rated games. Go look at how many DS/PSP games are above 75% on Metacritic, and then have a look at how many DS/PSP games are above 90%. You'll find the PSP has 1.
But WTF why are people so caught up on this? I pretty much play the PSP now as my main system, the DS gets a play when awesome games are released, so about twice a year. I'm 23 and enjoy the DS a hell of a lot when the time comes.
And no. The DS and PSP were out at roughly the same time (the PS3 was out 3 days before the Wii too, release dates mean little when they're so close) apart from the 9 month wait in Europe.
But what a terrible launch. All them dead pixels, all them poor games. It took me 2 years to get a few games for it that I classed as "must haves".

Basically there is no happy medium at the moment. Flash costs a lot (look at the stock price for a 32gb chip, yeouch!) but it's infinitely quicker at loading, uses less power, much more storage per inch. It's perfect - just the price holds it back.
UMD is terrible but serves as a good intermediate format until Flash is cheaper.

So what if they would have to spend about $2-4 AUS for a memory stick? It would bring so many benefits that the slight cost is well worth it.

The DS is a clear example of how effective marketing can be on a product's sale and reception.

It costs Microsoft 95 cents to stamp a disk with Windows on it, while Dell, Compaq, Gateway, etc. spend all the money on producing the hardware. Microsoft makes a large profit.
Apple, on the other hand, makes both their hardware and software, so it's a much bigger loss for them.
I guess you can sort of apply this here, but in this case the cheaper production cost is losing.

Metacritic PSP titles above 75%+ 122
DS titles above 75%+ 130
PSP titles above 90%+ 1
DS titles above 90%+ 4
Japan PSP launch+ Dec 12 2004
Japan DS launch+ Dec 4 2004
(As I said, the difference between the Wii/PS3 launch was also tiny but look at the wildly varying sales figures)
So don't call me a "liar" again, kthx :) next time use Metacritic and Google!

Apple are the 3rd most sold computer manufacturer and are making a very hefty profit.

All they need is a large 32 or 64gb chip and release games as downloads. It's not perfect but it would solve the loading and give devs more space to play around with. Just make Steam for the PSP, lol.

I even made a program that averages the scores up for me ages ago.
And yes, you are a liar. Your claim that all launch games sucked and all launch PSPs had dead pixels was a flat out lie

On a side note, I really miss playing on my Silver Slim :(

Just in case, I do have a PSP (though not a DS but have played it) and to be honest all games on it suck (except Patapon 2, that game is so good and prime example of great developer's innovation) and yes I've played games people try to say theyre god like GTA LCS and VCS, God of War CO, metal gear portable ops, and FF:CC, but in reality they're not good enough to call them great games. The only reason I have a PSP is for emulators, playing SNES, GBA, PS1 and N64 games (and I wont need the PSP anymore once I get a Pandora).

Disregard that, I'm going to enjoy both without comparing the two. Please take a moment to unstrain your buttcheeks and have some fun. They are two completely different consoles with the only similarities between the two is the fact that they are portable and the current-gen handheld systems. Give both a chance. They both have a very different library of games of varying genres. It's impossible to call one better over the other. It's just personal preference. Please guys, Just try and enjoy yourself.
I'm gonna go and play me some Crisis Core and Elite Beat Agents, kthxbai.
