Sony UK boss confirms smaller, lighter PSP in the works *UPDATE* |

March 13, 2007 - After all the rumors and speculation, a Sony exec has finally gone on record to say that a redesigned version of Sony's PSP handheld is in the works.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire told an invited audience of press, teachers and education specialists at the national launch of Sony's PSP in Education initiative that the current PSP is just the "first iteration", and that a "smaller, lighter" system will be introduced in the future.
Maguire also said that any redesigns would not affect the PSP's screen, which is apparently "fixed." Judging by Sony's track record of cutting the size and cost of their redesigned consoles since the PSOne was first introduced, a redesigned PSP could also presumably carry a lower price tag.
Following Maguire's statement, a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that apart from firmware updates, no "immediate changes" are currently planned for the PSP. "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development," said the spokesperson, "and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."
UPDATE (May 15, 2007): We were informed by QJ reader whoelse about a report at PSPGen regarding the "lighter and smaller PSP" allegedly in the works. Apparently, French magazine - The Official Guide of the PSP, has picked up this piece of info causing a bit of resurgence in this rumor.
As of now, there's still no new and official information about the "PSP Light" from the Sony camp. As always we will keep you posted about this matter, but for now, feel free to check out the PSPGen report complete with magazine scans and have your trusty Babelfish and Google Translate ready if you don't understand French.

Of course this PSP redesign will have a UMD drive, it's a PSP redesign, not a PSP2.
And of course Sony will continue to attempt to make it homebrew-proof (which will eventually be cracked).

As long it's like DS/DS lite it's ok :))

So there is no proof that current umds will be 100% compatible. Take a look at PS3 since Sony had it backward compatibility but what turned out was PS3 has backward compatibility problem.

people's responce to the PSP lite: OMG NO WAY AM I BUYING THE SAME THING AGAIN
I think they just need to fix the problems that the system has. For one, the screen is horribly impossible to view in daylight, which makes it a horrible handheld device. The nub could be redesigned, and the +pad should be tightened. I'd buy it if only they made the screen more visible. I'm tired of only being able to play at night, or in the shade. believe it or not, sometimes i'm outside in the sunlight, and i'm bored. too bad my psp can't help me there

Better screen, with less problems
8 gigs or more internal memory
Better quality buttons.
My analog stick is all wobbily and R2 sticks sometimes. To top all that my d pad makes creaky noises when I press on it.

The DS was too big, the dslite fixed that.
The PSP doesnt need to be smaller, and theres no real problems with it. No need for a redesign here.

Anyway, for all you people who say that it should come with 8GB flash memory, I really hope you're joking, or i;ve lost all hope for intelligent conversations for the rest of my life, 8GB?!? are you all thick or something, 8 GB of memory alone costs almost as much as a brand new PSP, and you think that sony will just throw one in for giggles, THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!!
But, I would like to see what Sony will do with a redesign, I think the idea of a second analogue nub would be great, but it wouldn't help with games that needed it in the past, I think a more feasible idea would be things like better battery life, and tighter controls, also, the faceplate should have something done to it, despite having a steel case for it, my faceplate has cracked twice, and I'm not prepared to replace it for a third time. They'll probably all come bundled with 4.xx firmware or some such like, but given time, homebrew will be playable again, thanks to amazing pspdevs....
I'll not pass judgement until i see a screenshot, I think i'll reserve my opinions until then...

Yes, I agree. There must be two analogsticks and R1, R2, L1 and L2 buttons.
