Sony to offer new digital copies for old UMD games

PSP Go - Image 1Sony has made it clear that the PSP Go will not render your UMDs useless. So what will happen to them if you do upgrade to a PSP Go? Will you have to buy the digital copies of the games you already have in UMDs? John Koller appeases your worries as he address this very issue.

Says Koller:

We're in the midst of putting together a good will program. We'll be unveiling that soon [because] we actually think there's a significant group that will be upgrading from the 1000...In the past, we've seen a 20-25% trade-up factor, and I assume that's going to be the case here. We've modeled that. So we're looking at a good-will program—a short term good-will program that would continue for years

afterward.

This goodwill system, further explains Koller, will essentially be similar to Portable Copy, wherein Blu-ray movies are ripped and converted from the PS3 to the PSP. However, you will not be ripping your UMDs. What will happen, actually, is that there will be a PSN-based digital distribution that you can sign up for service. At least that's what it sounds like.

And there's more. Since Koller likened it to Portable Copy - which in case you didn't know is for free - there's then a possibility that this new service for UMD owners will be free as well. We don't know for sure yet, however, if this service will be made accessible to all games across the board, or if it will be limited only to select ones.

» How about a peripheral instead of PSN?

Instead of having to go through the trouble of using the service on PSN especially for those without internet, why don't they just sell a separate device to rip UMDs plugs into the computer by USB or some proprietary serial crap? In turn it would convert the UMD content into psp GO format with some software. Wouldn't that be smarter? Then people who purchased the GO would also have to buy this device instead of a memstick since GO already has internal mem.

What would be even smarter is if people figure out that the PSP-go is an absolute train-wreck of a product so far.

» Not true

Not if it synchronized the content directly through usb or serial connectors to the GO. Then that content in turn is uniquely IDd with a PSPGO serial or key thus making it unplayable for other PSPgo owners.

You would have to expect sony to implement some kind of protectionism.

» Not so for me.

I mean come on, do you guys really like the old PSP over this? I don't, my PSP-1000 kinda sucks, with a few of my UMD disks breaking (my last game that is good is about to break). I NEED this, so I can carry everything on one system. ALso, this has MORE memory. Also, it's way more portable, and making the screen slightly smaller is okay for me.

Now if I only had the arm and leg I used to buy my first PSP for this.......

» Rentals

If sony does release some kind of app for the old Psp's that lets Sony know if you have the original umd in the drive and lets you download it, then what's to stop people borrowing or renting a load of games and getting free downloads? I mean if it works like this then i could easily sign up for one of these unlimited rental packages for £20. I'm just not holding my breath on Sony being that generous or stupid.

Sony just seems to whip out new psp systems every time hackers seem to hack it. psp 1000 and 2000 pandora later they release 3000 . 3000 hacked by tiff exploit (well 5.03) boom psp go! whats next? a good way to backup umds is if you went to a certified store and they had a special machine that ripped them for your psp go! and only for it with its mac address and they put a backuped sticker on ur umd so you couldn't lend to your friend so he could back it up and the sticker would have a special VOID sticker that if you took off it would leave the void on the umd

by akadewboy - 2009-06-04 12:13
» It is a little unbeleiveable

They don't even go into details how they're going to do it. It doesn't make any sense, how are is Sony going to know you actually own a UMD? What is stopping you from renting UMDs and using this "service" to get a free game on your PSPGO? Do you have to send the UMD to Sony to be destroyed?

by apex05 - 2009-06-04 12:14
» Never ever

Just think of the logistics involved in putting those umd ripping machines people talking about into every country and enough to be in reasonable reach of everyone, the simple answer is it will Never Ever Ever happen.

Yes really the PSP fat is 1,000 times better then the PSP 3000 and the now New PSP Go'

» Possibility

I can't help but wonder if your current PSP will be used in the validation process. Say you connect to the PSN and it verifies, through USB, the Disc ID of the UMD inserted and then in turn credits your account for that title.

If that's the case, then I can imagine a plugin of some sort for CFW to be released that will be able to fool the validation process into verifying an ISO instead.

by Metallica101 - 2009-06-04 12:36

The PSP Go had a good reason to be introduced, cause it has no UMD drive, 16GB of flash memory, and is more portable and lighter. I don't get what' up with PSP-3000 though.

About the first part: I had EXACTLY the same thoughts.

About the second part: Not sure about this one, if something like this is released then surely not from Dark Alex or the Noobz team. They are all for LEGIT ISO using, but tricking Sony to get money is a nogo for them.

Also you must be completely mad to use it, they will surely ban your PSN if they find out.

No thanks. I am stick with PSP 1001k. It is the best portable in the world until PSP2 the next generation then I will see what it look like but PSP Go is like the next PSP 4000. tsk tsk.

» Store Kiosks

I think there should be kiosks in major stores that sell games that you hook the psp up to, insert your umd and log into PSN from it. It then takes and puts the UMD inside some sort of "safe" for shipping to Sony. That way you couldn't just rent it and rip it. Then it would be tied to your account, it would then quickly download it to your psp using the kiosks highspeed internet and then the UMDs can be shipped back to Sony for whatever they want to do with them. Makes great sense and that is the way I see it going down.

by hush404 - 2009-06-04 14:16
» hmm

I kinda like the new system... but with 16gb... I wouldn't have enough space for my current collection (26, just counted) and forget about new games, demos, add-ons, and anything else I wanted to put on the system! Sadly it looks like I'm going to pass on the GO for now.

by joebo19x - 2009-06-04 14:20
» their are

plenty of people that would only change this one part. thus making them usefull for all.

Look at all the psn only games pirated..they only work with one account.. but they are hacked and can be used on any system.

How do you get more good will then that?

by PSPnoObmOd - 2009-06-04 16:01
» Yea, but...

If they were to be taken away, people, like older PSP user's might still like to keep their older PSP and keep their games and they also might want to get rid of the UMD but have it on both of their PSP's, so I dont see that as an option.

I really want to see Sony pull this one off without it being hacked or something in ANY way, then I would think that their not that stupid.

What is it that people don't understand?

Go will not replace the 3000.

If you don't have fast Internet, there is no reason to get a go, just stick with the 3000, it will still be in stores.

If you like me live in Sweden (or if you are in Japan) and have 100/100mbit/S then downloading any game in a few minutes is much more convenient.

So YOU choose if you want a go or a 3000, they will be selling both.

» More like 5%

5-10%, John Koller should really use his mind better.

Plus I like the model but if Sony were smart, they would make the screen go back to 4.3 because thats what made PSP famous.

Atleast thats what happened around me. They love the BIG SCREEN! Why they make it smaller, I may never know.

I would buy one if the screen size was at PSP's 4.3 but no thanks.

Sure 4.3 would take a little bit off the ounces or whatever but atleast the screen would be back at its original, lazy Sony.

Sony wants to succeed, make the screen size go back to 4.3. They can take out UMD stuff and such, just keep the **** 4.3 screen on it for godsake.

I don't care about the UMD stuff being taken out but I really care about the screen size being 3.8 instead of 4.3.

Sony would shut the service down if it were hacked, this is a good will service after all.

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-06-04 20:35
» i like eynstynes idea

but if it is to be implemented correctly then the PSP that is connected to the PSP Go! should decrypt the data using information that is unique to that one PSP (serial algrythms or something to that effect) so that game is only bootable in the PSP it was ORIGINALLY ripped from.

in other words you must log onto PSN.

if that copy has been ripped onto another PSP already, it simply will not work.

not sure if games have their own serials but if they do, this is the most practical way of getting the job done without the risk of piracy.

also i havent seen any video stores that have PSP games for hire in australia, they are for sale in plenty.

but if any vid stores do, them sony should stamp this out before Go's release date.

by Acteon - 2009-06-04 21:47
» It could work.

After all, Apple's DRM was pretty good at keeping the average consumer in check. The model exists, and if Sony supplied software that allowed you to rip a UMD from your PSP via USB, added DRM which limited use/storage to Apple's tried and tested 5 devices, I think that'd be a winner.

No need for extra hardware, built in protection and the incentive for people to buy the GO! if they so desired.

I'll wait until I see it in hand, but I'm not exactly drooling.

by Henkibojj - 2009-06-04 22:00
» What happened to Portable Copy?

Hey, I just saw a term I haven't seen in a year. What happened to Portable Copy? I think it was announced at E3 in 2008 or maybe even 2007, but I haven't heard a word of it since. Do they have to include that on the disc itself, or is it just "to be included" in a firmware two years from now like everything else they promise us?

I have only one BR, Casino Royale, but I'm pretty sure I would buy more if they FIXED THAT BLACK AND WHITE PLAYBACK FOR BR's ON PAL CRT's and included this Portable Copy feature.

by KnightOrc - 2009-06-04 22:58
» Portable Copy

If it plays back in B+W on your PAL CRT then you have a lame TV that doesn't support NTSC? *shrug*

by Henkibojj - 2009-06-04 23:59
» PAL BR on PAL TV should work fine

We've had this problem before, where videoclips won't play in full color. Some FW screwed this up a while ago. It was fixed within two weeks by releasing a new firmware, but this problem has been going on for a good five months now. If I buy a PAL bluray and play it on my PAL PS3 plugged into a PAL TV (CRT) then everything should work sweet. It doesn't. None of the latest three FWs have fixed it. It works fine on my parents' PAL 720p 37" HDTV though, why not on my CRT?

» MAYBE SONY ARE RELEASING THEIR OWN FORM OF HOMEBREW!?

Now call me broad minded but imagine if sony have decided that instead of working against the homebrew community, they have decided to work with them/us but add a twist to it. Maybe sony are using ISO's for the psp go allowing you to have the iso's on your psp go and your pc at the same time. they could do this by having an app on the pc that syncs with ur psp's serial number and registers the pc serial number with the psp serial number so you can only backup the psp's ISO's to that pc and no other. Obviously sony would copy-right protect the ISO's so that people cant upload them to file-sharing sites or copy them to other portable media. or maybe the backed up iso's of the psp could stay inside the app so that it doesnt let you take the iso's out of the apps library on the psp. meaning you could store games ur not playing on the pc leaving space on the psp. and u could use the same app to backup ur umd's, but still dunno how they would get around backing up rental copies unless they tell blockbuster etc to stop letting people rent them e.g. they make a law against it as an act of piracy

by devi59 - 2009-06-05 03:07
» Well think about it.

You technically CAN copy your CD to your computer for a "digital" copy as long as you don't circumvent any copy protection. But you can't just have 2 copies of the same thing without paying for them both. If they make the transfer free, then you are technically transferring your ownership from a physical media into a digital copy. Unless you were to pay a full price for the "second" digital copy, you would then have two copys and your EULA would be voided because you obtained 2 copies with only paying for one. So for older PSP users to want that physical media they would technically need to purchase a second copy because the first would be transferred to a digital media. It makes sense if you think about it. I don't know if I see it as an option, but with how they want to crack down on DRM because of all the hacking, it would make sense to go this route and prevent people from just doing the "rent" and get it as everyone has thought about above.

all of yous are a bunch of freaking w*nkers, 1st all what sony is doing is for the good of it LEGIT customers, 2nd psp go means no renting from a friend or a store that what developers said is KILLING THEM renting is 1st pirating is 2nd, and so what if the reason for the release is because 3000 got hacked.

3rd 1st you complain the GO will make your umd useless so sony give you an option to replace them.

They are running the business not you the will find a way to do it safely.

But you still complain you dont want the go dont buy it i dont care wether anyone likes it or not if i like it ill buy it if not well i wont.

zer0xx the PSP 3000 getting hack has nothing to do with them making the PSP Go'

(they have been planing that PSP Go' for maybe 1-2 years)

And now that the PSP 3000 can be hacked it will sell A LOT more even with a *****ty screen.

The PSP Go' is just a New way to make more money off of Dumb people.

the ONLY people that get hit by piracy is Developers "if you can even call it a hit"

At most they will lost about 2% of sells from piracy.
