Sony to announce restructuring plans, fate of PS group to be decided |
Ó
All eyes are on Sony as they prepare to announce their restructuring
plans in the next few days.Sony's CEO Howard Stringer announced last December that he plans to lay off 16,000 employees from the company to cut costs after their disastrous 57% slash on their year earnings.
Word is that Stringer also plans to cut out some products from their hardware lines, like television sets, as an answer to the lack of demand from consumers. The plan is to rely more on sales of software built into their gadgets.
The Financial Times' report made no mention of the PlayStation Group's status with Sony's executives, but hopefully, if Stringer's plans pull through, they won't be under the axe. While SCEE's David Reeves is sure that the PS division is safe, the mood is definitely tense as the clock ticks down to Sony's announcement.
Sony's predicament:
- Troubled times for PS3 and PSP: Sony cuts earnings forecast by 57%
- PlayStation group safe? Sony has no plans for further restructuring
- The axe will fall: Sony to lay off 16,000, PlayStation group under review
- Sony took the hardest blow from economic turbulence, says analyst

Only a complete moron would believe sony would cut it's own throught by pulling the plug on it's bread and butter ps brand...
Enter Isaac C.
It may not be cut off completely, ShadeyProphet, but there's always the possibility of layoffs across their divisions.
....and since when is the Playstation brand Sony's "bread and butter"? You do know that the majority of their business comes from other product lines, right?
lol
its probably a clock with the brand name sony on it
anyway cut out come cheap hdtv models, (you only need 1 at the same price)
and surround sound systems
playstation should be secure if theyre planning on relying on software
cnixon, i've been typing with a ps3 controller, it's kind of pointless to back track and fix words that everyone under the sun would figure out,
@issac, hmm, the tone of your post leads me to believe you arent really a sony fan. let's make a small bet on this, if the ps division is cut back in the slightest. then I will admit I was wrong. if it's not, You have to admit, The ps3 is the best console around..
Deal or no deal ?
cnixon, I just noticed you cursed me in your post title. over a simple typo, that oozes the rationality and intelligence that only years of forum trolling can provide,
You must be so proud,
it comes from years of reading the nonsense posted by people like you, who put absolutely no thought into their posts, until they get called out.
issac I jusst noticed something in your posts, yes, I had to back track and read a few to confirm my suspicions,,
I have to ask, why are your ps3 news posts always the negitive doom and gloom sort of news, you never post the positive or good news. that's always left to someone else.
You know, when I was a forum mod at another site. it was considered poor taste to use ones news posting abilities to paint only one side of a given story..
but who knows, it's been a while since i've been a mod, times have changed a lot, maybe the rules that dictate class have changed too..
you are quite possibly, the most clueless being i've ever encountered on qj. bravo to you, you should win a cookie,
Almost everyone here in staff knows who I am, im sure some of the regulars do.
Believe me when i say, my experience is vasly beyond your own when it comes to, these kinds of things.
Now you have two two options cnixon, you can slack up a little bit and find someone else to pester,
or you can be exposed as the knowledgeless forum troll you are,
you can take it to the bank, that my words arent empty, but i'll leave the decision in your hands.
I don't see how the PS3 is the best console around just because the PS division doesn't suffer any cuts. Kind of a loaded deal on my side, isn't it?
Here's my counter-offer. If they suffer cuts, you admit you're wrong and say the PlayStation 3 is the worst console around. If they don't, I'll admit I was wrong.
I'm the cynic of QJ. I don't just post doom and gloom for the PS3. I post doom and gloom for all consoles ;)
Now see, this is class, issac deflected my jab and come back with nothing but pure class, for that im forced to retract my statement about the "class" part, because you clearly bleed class, and I respect that,,
Or do you mean vastly?
Anyway, I'm glad you're so popular here. Unlike you, I have a life. I really don't spend much time on forums at all. Heck, I made this account an hour ago, just to respond to your stupid comment.
If you so "experienced" in "these kinds of things" (whatever that means), then back it up idiot. Most articles that I've read, have all stated that Sony has lost nearly 3 billion on their "bread and butter" as you call it. I was simply pointing out that PlayStation accounts for a small fraction of Sony's business model. So assuming that the PlayStation brand is somehow immune to recession is ignorant. I apologize for cursing earlier, but give me a break.
BTW, Mr. Experience. I'm also an MBA Graduate and a Financial Analyst.
no one said the ps brand is recession proof, not me anyway, you new tone in your post is some what more tolerable so im not going to retaliate as harshly, you are entirely entitled to your opinion, what ever it may be, im not going to debate opinion,
the ps3 has lost money we all know this, but the point you are missing, is our misunderstandin g wasnt about facts and figures at all.
and now that it's settled, on to a more civil relaxed debate.
This is my opinion, sony has lost a lot of money on the ps3, But what they have lost this gen, will be made back, the production costs are going lower as we speak, sure the 360 will always be cheaper then the ps3, but who will really care when the 360 is 99 dollars and the ps3 is 150..
the point is, at those prices people can afford quality, and thats the point, people are willing to pay for quality when the price is reasonable, soon it wont be about price anymore, and thats what 360 fan boys dont seem to understand, the fact is, sooner or later it will come down to quality, because the price of both consoles will be affordable, im interested to know what words the 360 fans will use to defend their machines then..
oh it's coming, make no mistake, that time is coming...
if you are analyst as you say, then you should realize what i said in the above post is completely true. Mr.Analyst..
No matter how you look at it, the PS3 will never be a success. (I own all three consoles.) It's true that the manufacturing costs of the PS3 will continue to decline, as is the case with ALL products. No surprise there. But, a $150 is hoping for too much, I'm afraid. Other than a small handful of exclusives and being a BlueRay player, the PS3 is at a serious disadvantage. I would dearly love to see a PS4, and I hope it does extremely well. However, Sony's console will not find success this generation.
Seriously. Grow up. I greatly enjoy my PS3, but if I had to choose one console, it would be the 360, hands down.
ahh the truth comes out, not once had cnixon stated he owned a 360, more ever I lead him to admit that and expose himself and nothing more then a 360 fanboy,
sorry man it's too late now,
furthermore how dare you of all people ask me how old i am!
or tell me i need to grow up. the question is how old are you? mr, analyst who curses others trolls forums and finally admits his 360 fay boyishness. are you even old enough to realize you are already exposed? My work is done here, have a nice day :)
I get it now? Your just joking. Haha, your sattire is REALLY funny.
Yes, I own a 360......and a Wii....and a PS3, and a PSP, and a DS. I have also owned all prior consoles. I like my PS3 as much as the next guy. I enjoy good video games. It's that simple, so cut it out with this "fanboy" garbage. We would all benefit if there were less people like you in this forum and the world.
Oh, and I'm 25.
Go for it Shadey!!!
saying he owns a 360 doesn't make him a fanboy i own all three and ps3 is definitely the best
to think i started out as a nintendo fan, I had everything made by nintendo as in their consoles. Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Gamecube, and then one day, out of the blue when nintendo didnt deliver the needs I had wanted for so long (online service supported by many titles), i decided to make the switch. I debated what would be more beneficial for me to switch to another company. I outweighed the pros and cons of the xbox and ps2 and i think the major diffrenciating factor for me was the free online service that came with the ps2. Ill be the first one to say it, im not rich and neither were my parents. Ps2 was actually my first system i bought without the help from my parents when i was a teenager. I have to say ive never disliked my choice of system either, ive been playing sony consoles ever since that day I made the switch. Nintendo's Wii is a serious joke to me, inovation? Are you serious? Ive been a gamer for too long to settle for babyish schemes that appeal to kids with inferior brains and old people with disentegrating brains. Ive played the xbox many times as with the 360, and to this date I still own neither of those two. People scream and ***** about the price of the ps3, which is funny, because im not rich, i have to work a job for the things i want, and when i want a true rich gaming experience, theres no other path to take then the ps3, i have the 80 gig model, looking into a bigger harddrive now, but im so happy about it. I dont have to get any additional addons to play my ps2 and ps1 games which i love to death, i love my internet browser even though some websites dont work properly on it yet(give sony some time and it will be truly unique!!!) The price dont matter if its something thats worth the money and will last you through the years, and the great thing is, you dont have to pay for upgrades, they are free in the form of firmware updates, and like usual the online service is free, which is what i loved so much about ps2, I dont feel it necessary to have to pay for a console, pay for internet, then turn around and pay again to use that console on the internet, thats just a cheap way of sponging money from consumers. Sony brand has stayed strong though many trials and tribulations, remember beta max??, so you fanboys quit grabbing at empty air, microsoft may have an upper hand in 2007 and 2008, but nows the time for sony, sony has always dwadled at the start of their new console, and then steadily they pick up the pace until their console is a must have. Dont believe me? just look at their previous consoles and tell me im lying. Anyways, until microsoft shows more initiative and nintendo gets rid of its baby and adult diapers, im sticking with sony. Im used to waiting for good things, its usually how it is on this planet, its all about patience and if you got it or not. Stick with your 360 if you want, but when they figure out how to fully utilize the ps3 capabilities you will think Killzone 2 is crumbs compared to the cake that will be set down in front of you.
that's a really large wall of text...but yeah, i like sony and M$ and Ninty...but in the end the consumers wins it all...
