Sony targets 13M PS3 unit sales, 50B yen PSN revenue for FY09

Sony has lofty goals for this fiscal year. Banking on the recent success of the PS3 Slim and the round of PS3 price cuts, Sony executive vice president Kaz Hirai has revealed that they plan to hit 13 million PS3s sold worldwide in FY09.

As Gamasutra notes, the 13 million mark would represent quite an increase if Sony does manage to hit it. In fiscal 2008, they moved 10.1 million PS3 units. They have until March 2010 to reach that goal.

Joystiq also reports that Sony expects the PlayStation Network to pull in revenues of JPÂ¥ 50 billion (around US$ 561 million), roughly thrice the profits they made last year. A slide from yesterday's investor's conference indicates that there are already 33 million registered PSN accounts. Of those, 1.4 million visit the PlayStation Store daily.

Hirai recently noted that Sony's plan to increase sales involves "offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network." Off the top of my head, one such PSN service is the digital comics store. We can probably expect other similar services in the future, which is quite alright with me as long as they do keep the core PSN service free.

No, they meant 1.4 million visit the store daily. It's not 1.4 million of person goind on the store each day, but each day, the store gets 1.4M visitors (different people)...

Anyway, it's really cool I suppose that sony makes money. The only downside is that they'll surely see the potential and start making us pay for everything.. like at 1st the wallpapers were free, now most walls cost money (premium) and the walls that have "few animation" cost 3$, it's a real joke. I hope they won't become perverted like M$ with charging for every single thing you can think of... Anyway, at least the PSN in general is free, that's why I'm buying all multiplayer games on my ps3 (and I burn the multiple platform games on my modded xbox 360, lol).
