Sony Store to feature PS1 for the PSP

making classic games available

Here's a very positive piece of news from Sony Computer Entertainment's Gamers Day: Sony revealed how PS1 games would end up on PSP's memory stick.

The PSP will get its games from the PS3. Instead of building a network specifically for the PSP, or trying to connect the PSP to Sony's Connect service, gamers can log into the PlayStation Store using their PS3, find your favorite PS1 games there, buy and download them, and then enjoy it on your PSP.

IGN speculates that that the PlayStation Store will also be integrated into the PSP in a future PSP firmware update. For now though, the console is integral for digital distribution. A number of PS1 gamers are already listed on the PlayStation Store. There is no promise though if the titles will be available for the PSP during launch. As for pricing, stuff on the PlayStation Store shouldn't exceed $15, so the price for PS1 game downloads should be within that range.

Personally all I can say is this: "Hot Damn. Finally!" Allow me to geek-out for a bit and say that Final Fantasy: Tactics better be up on that Store, okay, geeking-out over. Anyway, is the PSP-PS3 integration we've been waiting for? Feel free to comment.

This sucks, I need to have a PS3 to play/transfer ps1 games to the PSP. I have a PSP and that's all I want/need from Sony. I hope the firmware will be releasaed soon to allow non ps3 owners, to d/l games directly from/to the PSP. But good technique from Sony to bind the PSP customer to buying a PS3.

by InfraBLUE - 2006-10-20 02:07
» This is bull$hit

SO, to get ps1 games on a psp you need a ps3? and the ones you already own have to be rebought? this is sonys solution to low psp sells?

No wonder the companies going down, they dont care about the consumer. I actually had faith too...... i guess this is the one time im supporting pirates then. There has to be a way to rip my old games.

by darknite111 - 2006-10-20 02:08
» Ridiculous

So if I want PS1 games on my PSP i have to spend $600 (realistically $2000 if I want it in the next 3 months) plus the cost of downloading AND upgrade the firmware of my PSP?

This does not seem like the simpliest solution.

by Minus5252 - 2006-10-20 02:10
» This is BullS**t

So basically, in addition a console that is EXPENSIVE, it is also a game server that is EXPENSIVE. There is no way I will buy a PS3, as I don't think gaming companies should get so far ahead of the industry hardware-wise. There is still plenty of development that could be done with the XBOX360 and the PS3. They should've waited a year or so and released more reasonably priced games. Having the initial reliance on having PS3 to play PS1 games WON'T help PS3 sales, but it will piss PSP users off. Once again, Sony drops the ball.

by Daniel - 2006-10-20 02:10
» I hope..

I hope we can emulate the games that we already have (somewhere thrown away under a pile of dust somewhere in some closet) into PSP format so we don't have to waist money on actually buying them.

» Buy my junk... please?

Nothing like holding an over hyped long awaited feature (for $500+ PS3 ransom) that would for many justify even owning a PSP. I mean, if you own a PS3 with backwards compatibility already... whats the point? I'd even bet you buy them and then cant even play them on the PS3 itself, just PSP.

Darn straight someone will hack it (or another emulator) to pieces and put them in their place.

(of course, this is all speculation until the PSP2 is out )

by Vietone - 2006-10-20 02:11
» Give Sony time

As it stands, they probably want to test this out to a limited number of people. Like beta testing to see how it goes. Then they will release it on the PSP when they feel its the right time.

Companies have been doing this for years and Sony is no different.

Think of it this way, maybe Sony will use those Demo Kiosk as Playstation Store kiosk as well. You goto your favorite gamestore, Connect the PSP, buy PS1 games and transfer them to the PSP. Might explain why the PS3 Demo kiosk have such huge hard drives.

by bop - 2006-10-20 02:13

great not only do you have to rebuy your ps1 games you have to get a *****ing ps3 to do it. screw you sony

» Reasons for owning a PSP

It seems my only real enjoyment on PSP is from SNES games on the go! I was really looking forward to PS1 emulation but I have no plans of owning a PS3. I can't even afford a HDTV yet. I bought a PSP at launch and I hate Sony for punishing me for not being able to afford their "bargain" Blu-Ray player. I don't care how they justify the price...it's too high.

» ROFLCOPTER

That's gotta be the best gimmick I've ever seen. "We know you don't want to fork over $600 for a PS3, but wait. Oh you want PS1 games on your psp. Well...in order to do that your gonna need one of these *holds PS3 in the air*". Just do yourself a favor and go the Wii60 way. I'm not a fanboy for either or and I've liked both companys for it's own style of entertainment. But if you ask me, Sony has let me down with the PSP with all the hype and I'm starting to see the same trend with the PS3. Sorry Sony, even though you filled my heart with your RPG goodness, I think PS2 will be the last system I own of yours.

by Old school Gamer - 2006-10-20 02:23
» Old games are sweet.

Im guessing you dont have homebrew on your psp if so I pity you. I use my psp only to play old games like snes, nes, turbo graphfix, gbc etc. Tho its all free so its all good. So have to buy a ps3 to get sony ps1 emu then pay for old ps1 games makes no sense. Most good ps1 games besides the final fantasy already have ports to other consoles no real point in playing something with ps1 pretty bad graphics. Nice job sony and yet again making a cool feature crappy.

by DBX00 - 2006-10-20 02:27
» Lack of information

I'm sure that Sony has taken the fact that not everyone wants to use the PS3 to transfer the files. They'll probably release more information regarding this when the PS1 emulator is going to be released for the PSP or when they get the PS1 working on the PS3 by the end of the year. I do recall them saying that they wanted the Playstation Network to be available on any platform, so you probably will be able to access certain things from your PC and transfer to your PSP that way. Let's not take a lack of information and assume it won't be available until they specifically talk about the PSP firmware 3.0.

by Tristanm - 2006-10-20 02:34
» .

I say we find out how they format their PS1 games, see if there is a way to copy that, and if there is then just rip some PS1 games we already own and put them on our PSPs. Unfortunatly, chances are they may have altered the games to make them more PSP compatable which would mean we couldn't just rip our old PS1 games. I guess we have to wait and see how this will all work.

by Cold Facts - 2006-10-20 02:36

Especially for europe, where the ps3 will be launched in March of something like that. And even then, it'll still be 600,-

by FunnyStuff - 2006-10-20 02:38
» PS3 + PSP = Goodbuy Homebrew

Sounds like sony is going to make you update the PSP whenever you connect it to the PS3. So PS3 connectivity is going to be useless to most of you. Sony will continue to kill homebrew with firmware updates. But you'll probably get desperate enough for games that you'll need to run the update and download somes PS1 games to keep you busy till the next decent PSP title comes out.

by Gabe - 2006-10-20 02:42
» safe for now?

Well it appears you'll need a PS3 to buy PS1 games for your PSP until they integrate the store thingy into the PSP, so put your pitchforks down.

Anyway, I wonder how well-guarded against piracy the new PS1 emulator by Sony will be. I mean what's stopping hackers from buying a copy of a PS1 game through the store, remove all the protections and spread it; or even worse hack the emulator itself to run ISO's etc.

by liquidtenmillion - 2006-10-20 02:43
» Unfortunately...

Unfortunately, that is impossible. The game's source code is edited to provide things like different controls, or to tone down certain scenes that heavily use the PSX framebuffer, and the game is completely recompiled to be a PSP "native" executeable.

There will be no way to ever convert an ISO to the PSP.

by Tristanm - 2006-10-20 02:51
» .

Well, that is true. But these games are being put directly onto the memory stick. This means that these games will end up all over the internet. Is this piracy? Yes, but only as bad as something like downloading a SNES game. I mean really, it's a PS1 game. There is no way for them to compile a copy for a specific PSP. There's just too many.

» summary?

So, a $500-$599 PS3 is needed FOR NOW (until rumored future firmware update). The games are $15 at most, making it expensive for both necessary requirements for recieving ps1 games.

A firmware update will be required to use ps1 games (not completely confirmed).

Rumor has it that the interface may be used through kiosk explaining large harddrives.

You may not just rip your old game and use it.

These issues are more likely to make pirating attractive, espe cially for users who have already payed for the game.

My thoughts: Firstly, it is doubtful that Sony will ever use the PS3 to verify that you own the game due to the market value of the games currently being so low (maybe a discount at the most). They will claim you are paying for "the service".

Also, none of this should be too huge of a concern at first as until a new version of devhook comes out supporting version 3.0 (and possibly a firmware spoofer, it doesn't matter unless you really want to lose what you have by updating. Was anyone REALLY excited about PS3 PSP interconnecting ?

This IS going to be pirated.

Though some one from Sony did say:

In October you will be able to download PS1 games for your PSP. The PS3 comes out next month so you prob will be able to download with PSP still.

» Question.

Did people actually expect Sony would just let you use your own PS1 discs to play on the PSP for free? No one actually expect it would be like the Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade where you buy, then download the game you want and play?

by xbox 360 owner - 2006-10-20 04:29
» dont think so

they would not make money with that plan since you can buy old ps1 games for 3$$$...plus people could just borrow games from their friends ..and i dont think ps1 games have online identification codes to identify already used games since they where not meant to play online.plus im pretty sure sony had to rewrite some of the game codes for it to work with the sleep feature of the psp and the lack of a second analog stick for the games that use it.so my point is your old cd playstation games are WORTHLESS.this is really not going to be successfull i give it 1 year before it get taken down like umd movies..

» regarding PSX on PC...

I thought a few comanies have tried PSX emulation on PC, (ie. connectix Virtual Game Station) and sony shut them down. I know there are still emus out there, but I don't think Sony is happy to let their technology play on PC hardware. way too easy to copy and spread. it would only hurt them in the long run.

My prediction is that they will have the PS3->PSP download service up and running for a few months, an then like the Sega Channel, Sony will realize it's a waste of resources, and shut it down. This will piss a few people off, but overall it won't affect many, because noone in their right mind would subscribe.

if I can go to a pawn shop and pick up an old PSX and a pile of games for $30, I can handle only playing them at home.

by Joey - 2006-10-20 04:38
» Not such a good idea...

1) You need a ps3, not everyone wants to spend 600 bucks.

2) So all the ps1 games you bought before you have to rebuy them for about 10 bucks eh? so thats like what 2-300 dollars for me to rebuy..bull..

3)sony = stupid decision

» I don't see the need for complaint...

As manaox already pointed out, this method of distribution will be pirated sooner or later. I'm sure you'll be able to get all your favorite ports via p2p networks, put them on your memory stick and play. So stop *****ing people. Chances are, you won't have to worry about purchasing a ps3 to utilize the ps1 emulation.

I just hope not EVERYONE jumps on board the piracy bandwagon. Otherwise, I'm sure the amount of ports we'll see will dry up real quick. Hopefully they'll be able to hold out till at least a Castlevania SoTN port is released. =P

» Great Idea

I think this is a great idea. It really shows Sony's commitment to making the PS3 a hub for all forms of entertainment and shows that they're supporting PSP>PS3 connectivity. You didn't see that kind of support with the GBA and GC. So what if you have to buy a PS3 or repurchase your games. If you're that poor that you can't afford this stuff, then trade your foodstamps in for a Wii.

How is this POSITIVE news?

Sony is FORCING PSP owners to buy a Playstation 3 in order to play PS1 games on their PSPs.

That's not POSITIVE - that's Mega-NEGATIVE!

This is the most agressive, bullying tactic I've ever seen from Sony. If PSP owners can't just download the PS1 games and PS1 emulator directly to their PSP from the Internet WITHOUT having to pay $600 for a PS3, nobody is gonna even bother with it and the last real reason to own a PSP will be DEAD.

You guys think so low; why don't you look at a higher standard? Complaining about the PS3 being so expensive and to refuse to buy one. Listen, the world that we live in has expensive technology written all around it and the PS3 is no different. You guys are like saying that a million dollars is still worth a lot today. Quit being cheap (unless you're dirt poor) and make some money, I'm sure a lot of people will buy PS3s for its' games, but the way you guys are crying, you guys make the PS3 sounds like the main use was supposed to be for the PSP. At least it does something for it and probably go even further (that is if you guys support it) If you don't like it, then don't complain. The PS3 has some promising games and by the looks of it, you get what you pay in the end. It's one of the gaming future and it's cool to play games from the past, but we're aiming for the future.

its just another cheap way of sony trying to get people to buy a 600 or 500 dollar ps3 no offense to the ps3

» Confession of a Sony Fanboy-This is why Sony may lose to Microsoft this round...

The whole purpose of making it at least "initially" requiring a PS3 is to get more people buying the horrendously expensive PS3. Sony is purposely trying to take PSP users, who've been excited about the whole PS1 Emulator service since it was first shown, for all their worth. Not to sound cynical, but the way all this is going, I wouldn't put it past Sony to start stripping down games and selling the individual parts using their new "free" online service.

I love my PSP and PS2, but the way things are going with the PS3, I'm not getting one for a LONG, LONG time.

» Sony pwnd us all

Well this is very smart of Sony.. Make em buy a ps3 if they want ps1 games right now. No way is it hard to immediately open that store for the psp! Or on a pc! But this way, ps3 sales will crank up;)

by DB Tyrell fan - 2006-10-20 08:54
» i was planning on buying one anyways

i may not have the money yet, but the ps3 is going to be sweet when it comes out. and even if we can't all afford them, they will probably only use the ps3 marketplace thing for ps1 games for a while. they'll probably make something specificialy for the psp after a little while. but this way at least some people won't have to wait as long to get the games.

» PS1 Games will be downloadable from the PSP

I was just reading and interview with Peter Dille(SCEA senior vice president of marketing) and he says that PS1 Games will also be downloadble from the PSP itself.

Here is the piece of the interview:

BIZ: I know you guys have previously talked about a PSP emulation service where PS1 titles would be downloaded directly to the PSP (for example, if someone didn't own a PS3). This new PS3 download service of PS1 titles, which involves transferring to the PSP, is not going to replace the previous PSP emulation plan is it?

PD: You are correct. We'll still have that. We have the PSP downloads site now, and you're right; these PS1 games will be available either from the PSP downloads site directly, so you don't need a PS3 to get them or if you do happen to be one of the lucky guys that gets a PS3, you can download the games to your PS3 hard drive and then slide it over to your PSP. Both services will be up and running.

Hope that answers some questions.

» Bad move

This is a bad move for Sony in this perticular respect...

What they should have done is set it up to work like this for games that people wanted to get that they didn't already own (hey, you don't own it, buy it for like 5 bucks.) If you already own the game put the game CD in the PS3 and then you go into a utility menu on the PS3 and it RIPs the CD into an ISO that can only be transfered and played on your PSP. (Yeah, you ask how can this be done... simple. Have the ulility check the MAC address of the PSP (you're connected to the PS3 from it anyway... it knows the MAC on the connection.) then it encodes the ISO to be playable by the PSP with that MAC address. The PS1 emu checks and does this check on it own natively on the PSP when it starts (checks the local MAC and then the ISO encoded MAC).

Also, you can only have 1 PSP connected to the PS3 at one time. Granted, what's to stop you from connecting and disconnecting everybody you know's PSP to get the games that YOU own, but hell, what will stop people from sharing the downloaded PS1 games anyway?

There you go, Sony still makes some money from the PS3 sales as well as the PS1 game sales in the online store (for those of you that don't own the game), while still making it rather hard for people to pirate the games. It'll never be completely foolproof, nothing ever is, but it'll allow people who own the games to actually rip them and not have to rebuy them if they don't need to. Sony developers/execs at the company need to start thinking out of the box a little instead of thinking with their heads up their asses.

BTW, no one has yet figured out how to spoof the MAC address of the WIFI card in the PSP (this is still kinda funny to me because I can easily spoof my PC's MAC in XP at that) so they are still safe on that front... for now anyway.

by no way!!! - 2006-10-20 09:25

» Corporate Pigs!

Well I find it disapointing. Not because of the PS3-PSP transfer system, but the fact that Sony is trying to "persuade" people to use the old game disks. This means if you don't own the game, you'll have to buy it. Again! Because how many of you actually still have those games from 10 years ago? That work? As for the transfer system, it's a kick in the ass for sure. No one wants to pay 0 in 2006 for a PS3 to play old games from 1997 that are worth . They are going to buy brand new games. I am SO disapointed.

» PS1 Emu

I think that I will just wait and see if anyone comes out with an actual PS1 emulator, you know, one that actually plays games you already own. Sony is fu(k1ng money hungry, they are going to charge up to $15 for a 10 year old game? Screw that. PIRACY WILL WIN THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!

» Youre an idiot

Sony's stock has not dropped 62%... and when you say its dropped you need to say a time line. Ok its way down from 2001... but can we all say DUHHH! its trading at about 40pts now so its down about 10 points or.. say it with me 20%. Thats fairly relative as well. You cannot rate a company soley on their stock prices. Looking further into the company they are doing ok. In fact most analysts (the real ones) say hold Sony stock.

The PSP is also far from dead. Did you take stupid pills as a kid? How can you sell MILLIONS of units of a product, then call it dead. Please don't ever start a business, you'll fail fast. Please also, stop posting, because someone might catch your dumb.

Who cares, we ALL know, that within time, pirates will crack the fw and make a custom version that allows you to run ps1 ISO's off your memory stick.

This is just a money scam from sony, that will piss the wrong people off which will then crack the fw. period. i aint worried, i think it sucks they are doing it this way...i would almost be willing to fully upgrade, IF i could play my current games via pc to psp. but fuggem. ill wait for it to be cracked. its un avoidable. the only way to stop it is to NOT release the ps1 fw.
