Sony: Sorry, But No PSP Price Cut!

psp2The rumor that the price of the PSP will be cut by up to $50 was quickly dismissed by Sony. Breaking their silence on the issue, a Sony UK spokesperson has issued a statement saying "Currently we have no plans to cut the price of the PSP at this time." It has been noted by other analysts that Sony would most likely cut the price of the PS2 instead.

News of the price cut for the PSP has recently spread over the internet like wildfire after industry analyst P.J. McNealy recently told CNN Money that "There is a price cut coming in the second half of the year."

However, as we enter the last few months of the year, many are still hoping for yet another change of heart from Sony after this disappointing dismissal.

Hopefully when they decide to put out the White PSP (US) they cut the price.

Oh well I have my psp...

Still would have thought it a good idea for xmas

» hmmm

I think they should cut the price, and as number 1 said release the White PSP in the US at the same time. Maybe bundle them with GTA: Vice City Stories before Christmas.

They need to get back ahead of the DS in the US or support will drop, and these Nintendo fanboys are getting pretty bad. If only I could punch them through teh internetz.

» There is never an officially planned price cut

Would be a very stupid move to tell your customers "if you buy our product now, you are paying more than you should". The sales would drop dramatically and maybe won't even pick up fast enough after the cut to compensate the loss.

Sanity enforces denial until the very day it happens.

» PS3 price cut

Why dont they actually listen to their fans and rethink the price of the PS3??

Why not a price cut on the PS3? Its the one thing stopping MILLIONS of people buying it.

» Damn

I do not have it and I hope they will cut the price and they didnt. They are very selfish and wont cut it. Nintendo rules because they cut it so quickly and have a heart. Damn you, Sony!

"iI do not have it and I hope they will cut the price and they didnt. They are very selfish and wont cut it. Nintendo rules because they cut it so quickly and have a heart. Damn you, Sony!"

Are u stupid?

Nintendo DS costs almost nothing to make, it's made of cheap, very outdated parts inside a shiny plastic case. The PSP is made with much more expensive parts. Nintendo makes money on each DS, Sony loses money on each PSP sold.

Nintendo has no "heart" - they just make cheaper systems with lower quality parts inside. Did you know PSP has a 5x faster CPU, 4x as much RAM, far more powerful graphics and sound and lots of other features the DS can't do as well?

PSP costs more because it's much more advanced hardware.

» well of coarse they are gonna say that...

they dont want a drop in systems sold from now until the price drop, every company says that even if they are haveing one.

I bought my PSP for 180$, but I don't care..

by the way.. Nintendo DS sux.. it's a toy.. not a game console

it's for 5yearolds..

» @ number 13

Wow, it's amazing that the PSP is so much more expensive and so much more advanced!

However, it's ironic though that there are no decent games on it and that the DS is just more fun!

Double win for Nintendo, keeping things simple and fun, and NOT loading a console with a bunch of advanced features that you can't take full advantage of unless you have 1.5.

by TheProfessor - 2006-08-14 05:30
» No company in their right mind would announce a price cut months before it happens

Do guys remember what happen to DS sales when the DSLite was announced in Japan? People almost stop buying them.

It's just not good business sense to announce price cuts or revisions months in advance.

PSP much like the PS3 is made of expensive parts, thats why there will not be a price drop. Plus there just was a 50 dollar price drop for the PSP. Did you know that the DS costs about 50 bucks to make and they have the balls to sell it for 150 bucks. PSP cost sony about 150 dollars to make. And number 17 screw off. Im sorry that we like paying a little more for our consoles for a better one. And we dont look for "fun" from our consoles. We look for realisticness, universallness, and nultimedia. Not just queer kiddy video games. Grow up youre parents hate you.

"And we dont look for "fun" from our consoles."

Then perhaps you need to find something else to do with your life. If it's not fun, then what's the point?

"We look for realisticness, *universallness *, and nultimedia."

Hey #16 the psp isn't a game console you dumb idiot. Even Sony said that!

by Kaemon - 2006-08-14 09:24
» To #20

There was no 50$ price drop, there was them releasing a core pack, thats not a price cut. A Price cut would be the same stuff, for, GASP, less money. The DS costs more then $50 to make, and they sell it for $130, not $150. The PSP Costs more then $200 to make, last I checked, so they make money off of Game sales and stuff like that. And if you dont look for FUN in a console, or game, then WHY do you have it? What good is something that BORES you as you use it, you can have all the multimedia you want, but if its BORING, you dont want it! And you looke for Realisticness? The PSP hardly brings that, Universallness? If ya wanna pay for UMD movies, large memory cards, or if ya have a 1.5. Multimedia? Alone, the PSP is so handicaped on that its not even funny. Since I got 1.5 I use it for WAY more then I did my 2.71. Get a life ya know, and queer kiddy games? Oh wow, thats a pretty sad one ya know. You buy a PSP or DS for entertaininment , thats why I got my DS as well. The PSP lacks in the game department, while the DS excels, while the DS has no other features, the PSP has luke warm ones. Get a life, quit having your parents buy you every new TOY that comes out, and quit looking down on somthing, just becasue its not as Advanced. GCN and Xbox were more advanced then the PS2, and we know how that one turned out.

by bryan - 2006-08-14 09:44
» what a loser

dont cry about it a-hole its not a big deal. And by "fun" I didnt mean I like playing boring games. I mean i like playing entertaining, and games that brings me joy. And no if I buy something for multimedia it does not mean its going to bore me. Unlike youre virgins I like multimedia more than gaming. But you can have with youre dual screen portable sh*t box and play mario party 18 untill youre thumbs fall off. Or you can play some homebrew/emulators, whatch videos, listen to music, look at pictures, surf the net, and play games with amazing graphics. And I bought a 4GB memory card for 100 bucks. And I dont buy UMD movies. Which is something the DS cant do. DS sucks, the end. It cost 50 bucks less that PSP and it cant do a quarter of the ***** PSP can. Its not even worth it.

When Nintendo was asked about a DS redisign, top people were reported as (not know they heads from their butts) saying that Nintendo had no plans to redisign the DS. 2 weeks later, the DS Lite is "unveiled".

I think the PSP price cut may very well be coming, but it would impact their _current_ hardware sales greatly if they announced it ahead of time (kinda like: what numbers would you pick for the lottery if the public draw was 3 hours before tickets went on sale?)

by X - 2006-08-14 12:49
» Hahaha

#20, you made my day.

You guys like the DS? What the ***** you stupid virgins!!!

Liking DS = virgins

Gotta love that logic. Also, saying that you don't buy a console for "fun" but you buy it for "entertainment" makes all the sense in the world. It's not like "fun" and "entertainment" mean the same thing or anything. I understand you perfectly.

Let's try to remember that these are freaking VIDEO GAME CONSOLES that we're talking about. Jesus freaking christ. Who cares who the ***** likes which one?

I hate people.

» expected

yea i dont expect sony to drop the price anytime soon.....maybe next year in spring. PSP is still selling nicely at its current price point, and i definitely CANNOT see sony dropping a $50 price cut in a single blow....never happened to any sony console before. if anything, it'll probably be a gradual $20-30 price cut, like how they been doing to the PS2 for the last 4 years.

by Bearmon - 2006-08-14 14:15
» nah

13,

no, Sony is an ***** because...well, I rest my case. Read more about them and you will understand. :)

» If white then..

I'll buy a third and update the firmware if it is a white one. My two black 1.5's continue to purr along nicely, but with Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins Coming, and hopefully (well maybe eventually GTmobile) and even GPS attachements, I think a 3rd PSP (a white one to match my new DS) would balance out the collection nicely.

by the_darkside_986 - 2006-08-14 15:21
» this is stupid

Not the lack of a price drop but the comments. PSP is a great machine, and if you can get 1.5 on it, then it is well worth the price, if not more. The DS is very fun to play as well, but in a different way.

The problem with the PSP's potential value is that Sony didn't anticipate homebrew on the PSP like they should have. Anything with USB and memory card storage will be subject to hackers and coders. But if Sony fails to support homebrew, the PSP has no value except as a shiny mp3 and mp4 player. (mp4... wtf were they thinking?) No rational person will constantly pay 40 or 50 bucks for horrid unplayable games that have ok graphics (not great but not awful graphics, that is). The new firmware features are also pretty lame.

by danielsfbay - 2006-08-14 15:42
» Supply and Demand

..as long as Sony is still getting it's original MSRP, and they hold off on an improved version, there is no reason to lower the price. People are practically giving away their used ones with the assumption that the retail price will drop. As long as Sony's supply meets the demand and nothing more, I don't see lowering their price a good business plan.

sony dont need a price cut they arnt really that expensive i have 5 psps

If Sony really want to sell more PSP¨and PSP Product, in order to really be a Nintendo concurrent ('cuz it isn't the case for now to me) They'll have to do a cut price, to their 21st Century Walkman (as they call it)

by To #8 - 2006-08-15 04:16
» PS3 price cut - its not out yet dude

The PS3 is not out yet and that is why no one is buying it. That thing will sell like hot pancakes in a IHOP or Waffle House. They won't cut the price on that for sure.

Sony isnt cutting the PSP....for at least a year. They are already charging less than it cost to make. And they arent selling much games thanks to devhook. But they werent selling well to begin with. As long as devhook is around you will never see a price cut.
