Sony has revealed that the Playstation 3 has sold more than 440,000 units during the Thankgiving week with the PSP also seeing a significant sales increase. According to Patrick Seybold, SCEAÂ’s Sr. Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media:
The 2009 holiday season got off to an amazing start for PlayStation, with all key retailers showing a significant increase for PS3, PSP and key holiday titles over Black Friday and the holiday weekend. PlayStation 3 demand was at an all time high with the system selling more than 440,000 units for the week ending 11/29/09.
In todayÂ’s economy, consumers are drawn to items that offer the most value for their money, making the PS3 an ideal choice for those who want a comprehensive gaming and entertainment system all in one package. Combine that with exclusive holiday bundles and an extensive software line-up, one that many analysts are calling the best in the industry, with titles such as Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, UNCHARTED 2:Among Thieves, and LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year, we have no doubt the momentum and demand will continue and consumers will prove that entertainment this holiday season is going to be defined by PlayStation.

But I saw an article that seems to go against this:
http://www.industrygamers.com/news/miyamoto-sony-microsoft-have-big-challenge-in-competing-with-wii/
This all deals with Nintendo's different approach to gaming, as Silver already stated. These three articles were all written in 2009, but the first two were before Project Natal and Sony's Motion Controller were announced.
So it seems that before then, Nintendo felt comfy with their own kind of market as Sony and MS sport any similar motion controls (excluding SIX-AXIS). Now that Sony and MS are infringing on the market, Nintendo is interested in the challenge they bring. Though, Nintendo doesn't mention anything explicit about wanting to compete against them.
So what conclusion will I rest at? Nintendo is going for its own market, but Sony and Microsoft are looking into it as well. There's going to be competition among all 3 giants, but the only direct competition there will be is between Microsoft and Sony.

One has to wonder if Nintendo said they weren't competing last gen that Sony fanboys wouldn't be going on about their sale figures so much?
Fact: Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are all competing.
Fact: Listening to PR words over reality makes you a moron. Hows that 4D, dual HDMI 1080p60 PS3 treating you?
They all release casual games, was the PS2 any less of a console because it had a massive shovelware ratio compared to the other systems? Did any of you kids know Nintendo was criticised in the 80's for not being a games/console manufacturer because they casualised the experience back then too, the opponents being people who played Atari, Commodore and PC (as they were) games?

The Wii, PS3, Xbox all have RPGs, mature games, kids games, casual games, hardcore games, toy/experimental games. They're all the same. A system doesn't become what it has disproportionat ely...
The PS2 wasn't JUST a JRPG console. The Xbox isn't JUST an FPS console. The PS3 isn't JUST a series of super hyped, poor performing games.

Ok now being serious, with other people.... OF COURSE Microsoft would say they arent competing with the Wii anymore.. because they ARENT competing. They are getting blown away consistently for years. (to them personally). Realistically, YES they are ALWAYS in some way competing. just as anyone is that are in the same market of business. They just say they arent because they no longer have faith in their product vs the wii
