PS3 and PSP - Image 1Despite coming out at the bottom of the consoles' sales charts, Sony remains optimistic that PS3 and PSP sales will pick up in the coming months, according to their latest financial report. Perhaps this has anything to do with the hardware redesigns coming to E3? That remains to be seen.

For 12 months ending March 31st, 2009, Sony shipped 14.1 million PSPs and 10.1 million PS3s. For the next fiscal period, Sony predicts 15 million for the PSP, and 13 million for the PS3. Packaged software unit sales picked up just a little bit to 240 million from 237.7 from last year. Sales via the PlayStation Store, however, are expected to do far better with thrice as many as the previous year's.

If the rumored Go! PSP and the Slim PS3 indeed come out within the fiscal year, then Sony will have new cards on the table that may up the sales in their favor. A UMD-less Go! PSP would definitely up PS Store sales, perhaps reaching their lucrative target, but I don't know about the Slim PS3 though.

New hardware aside, both the PS3 and PSP have very solid lineups for 2009. For instance, the PSP lineup includes LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, and the North American release of Dissidia. For the PS3, it's God of War III and Uncharted II, among others. So even if Sony doesn't whip out new hardware, I think they've got a pretty good gameplan to reach those numbers.

» don't think sony should worry either

as i too think they'll catch up pretty soon.

all those games, and they're only getting better (it seems)

hmmm, i wonder where Silent Hill 1 went?

it was there once, i managed to download/buy it, but a few days later, it was gone.

not anywhere on the store anymore, except for my downloadlist... hmmm

» Meh.

I used to be like the optimistic types. The ps3 was late coming out of the gate. give it time to catch up..

But years have passed now, {YEARS} not months or weeks, and everyone is still saying (just wait)..

Just wait for what? For the 360 to score even more exclusive titles and Dlc? The fact is we are a few {YEARS} into the console wars now, And its pretty easy nowadays to tell whos winning this thing...

Don't get me wrong I love my ps3, Its a solid well designed and powerful console. But My 360 Just has more games... And lets be fair,, We didnt buy our way into this console generation to do anything other than play games, And those few people who did buy a gameing console to use for something outside of gameing cant really be called gamers.

Can they??

» hmmmm

i tend to use my PS3 quite a decent amount for messaging.....i dont have unlimited txt yet.....this will help keep my crappy 200/month low....er...

anyways, i like the blu-ray...most of the action movies i got in blu-ray, for the same price as a DVD, not bad eh?

anyways, i dont want to sound like a total fanboy, but i dont like most of the 360's exclusives, i like GoW2, but not too much...and id like to try out Fable2...i care nothing for the rest

Sony's problem is their refusal to drop the price a little more. Sales have picked up but they're basically the Game Cube of this gen. Great system but still technically in last place. They can fix all that if they drop the price with the release of FFXIII in Japan and just a price drop + bundle in the US. They need to step their game up and keep snatching up these exclusives. Either way I don't care who wins this race so long as I can enjoy my games. Sony wont tank and die from losing one console race because, like MS, they've got tons of cash.

Once they figure out how to reduce the cost without compromising the system then they'll be able to pull ahead.
