Sony responds to NPD US November figures |
Ó

Sony has sent out their own take on the NPD Group's sales report for the month of November. In a nutshell: The PS3 may be lagging behind the other consoles in sales, but it's still doing pretty damn well. Here are a few numbers from the Sony press release:
- [PS3] has continued its strong momentum during the holiday season with 378,071 hardware units sold in November, representing an increase of almost 100% from October.
- From January to November 2008, more than 2.8 million PS3s have been sold in the U.S., representing a year-to-date hardware sales growth of more than 60%.
- [...] more that 3,552,456 software units were sold for PS3 in November, representing a year-to-date growth of 150%.

Sony got outsold more than 2:1 by the Xbox during the 2nd most important month of the year, in what was supposed to be the "PS3's year", 2008. LBP didn't even break the top 10 in sales, and Res 2 fared poorly With the PS3 still at $400 and the Xbox at half that, it'll get beat even more handily during Christmas and all thru December PS3 is a great system, but is destined for 3rd place now, Better luck next time Sony BTW QJ, you linked two October NPD sales results articles under related, when they have nothing to do with this statement. This is the related article http://ps3.qj.net/NPD-US-Wii-posts-one-month-record-Gears-of-War-2-leads-software-charts/pg/49/aid/127243#comments
wow this is an ignorant way of looking at it. Ps3 is only 2 years into its forecasted 10-year lifespan. In time as DVD dies out guess what everybody will turn to? PS3 and Blu-ray. Don't forget, Xbox has also had a 1 year head start, so its got a bigger user-base now.
How is looking at sales figures ignorant? The PS3 got beat more than 2:1 during the month that includes Black Friday... That's bad, no matter how long each console has been out It's triple-A games also barely registered a blip during the first half of the holiday season. That is affected by user-base, but when one of your biggest games of the year sells a paltry 380k units to a user-base of almost 6 million in the US, that's pretty bad. The 360's user-base is about twice that of the PS3 in the US, yet Gears 2 sold more than 4x as many copies as Res 2 I also never even said anything about installed user base, I said the PS3 will never catch the Xbox now... IE 3rd place, because the Wii already won And that ten year lifespan, with the performance of the PS3 in the markets, is laughable to say the least.
Seems to me like Sony is trying to console themselves. Or at least trying to allay the fear of their userbase that PS3 is really not doing well. Truth to be told, I am not even slightly interested with what PS3 is offering right now (except MGS4). And what the PS3 can do, the X360 can do too, and do well in some instances. Still, I love the PSP though :p
Comon guys. Your barracking for a console as if its a footy team. Who gives a crap as long as you get good games and you enjoy it. Stop trying to settle your insecurities about your purchases and go play them!
WRONG, the PS3 can do a lot more than the 360. for 1,Xbox 360 will never be able to make a multiplayer game with up to 250 people online(MAG). to me xbox is only good for now, PS3 is good now and the future. it's worth $400, why buy something that would only last 3 months and not reliable for the future.
The argument over which on is better can go on forever but one interesting thing I see is that a lot of people I know who have a 360 are now "upgrading" and getting a ps3. I can't say I've ever met someone who owns a ps3 and then bought a 360.
250 people online isnt great... I thought PS2 and 360 could take much more than that in FF11... but that game is crap anyways. Really, if you beleive MAG is gonna be good then think again, you all should know how an FPS game with that many players would make the game lag unless the graphics and features are of low quality, and the reason isn't the console, its the servers. And yes, the 360 doesn't last more than 2 years because of RROD (which is probably one of the most careless faults any videogame console has had in history), but at least microsoft still fixes it for free. Sony is really of horrible reputation in customer service (that I know of in the console, camera, and tv market, not sure about the rest...) for example not wanting to fix for free a PSP with dead pixels, on guarantee, unless it had a certain amount of dead pixels (Nintendo would fix for free the DS, on guarantee, for even 1 small dead pixel). Ohh and remember when one of the PS3s firmware bricked many PS3s? They would only fix them for free if you still had the receipt...
Yet another useful post being downrated... It was the year of the PS3. I know they're not all exclusives but GTA IV, LBP, MGS4 and for what? To do absolutely terribly in sales. Worst of all Sony are bumping up the prices of their hardware so don't expect a PS3 price cut ANY time soon! And ultra EPIC LOL at people buying into that "10 year lifespan" joke. Come on now, you don't expect that to be true? Microsoft are going to have a new system out in at least 2 years that'll likely be very powerful, very capable hardware. What's the PS3 going to do? Sit back like the weak system and take an even bigger pounding whilst the Wii still costs less? The market is not fixed like that. If a powerful and well supported system comes out in the next couple of years then bugger Sony, maybe even bugger Nintendo. And people will turn to PS3 because DVD dies? WTF, are you drunk  People will turn to cheap BluRay players that cost 1/2 of what the PS3 does.
Well the cost of development is off the charts for 360 and ps3. I doubt they will make anything more powerful for a good while until they find some shortcuts in developing this gens software
"And ultra EPIC LOL at people buying into that "10 year lifespan" joke. Come on now, you don't expect that to be true?" That just goes to show how ignorant people can be. 10 years? Let's see, even VHS didn't last 10 years without an upgrade. CDs didn't last 10 years without an upgrade. The PS3 might last for 10 years but not without sitting next to a PS4. After all, the PS2 should last 1 more year and that will have made it 10 years. 2000, yes? However, even then, not without a major makeover! Yup, who ever believes that 10 year lifespan..... I've got a talking dog to sell you!
Of course theres gonna be upgrades and probably the ps4 before 10 years. But as people are still developing for the ps2 so will the ps3. Plus the wii has actually given room for microsoft and sony to keep their systems longer before they move on to the next due to nintendos success with past gen hardware.
Is it so hard to save a piece of paper? You can always throw it in the box that came along with the system?
the reason (as I see it) that the PS2 is even still marginally selling is 2 things 1) it has the largest install base in history. So its still slightly profitable to develop on it and 2) the Wii being in existance is actaully HELPING the ps2 on the software side. it takes little (if nothing at all) to port a wii game to PS2. And it seems to handle it just fine. So it seems most multi platform games are made 2X. Once for the PS3 and 360 - which in this case they are almost ALWAYS made to run on the 360, then ported to the ps3. This because the 360 is the weaker of the 2 systems, and most importantly has the smaller storage space on the disk. And once for the Wii - Once the wii version is made then they spawn to create the PSP and PS2 port of the wii version. For this reason I run a PSP and a Wii in my home. The multi player games I enjoy more on the wii. And the games that are a bit more "serious" usually I like better on the PSP. Mostly the reason for that is that they have STUPID motion controls for most of the 3rd person games that are just annoying! Where as the PSP (and presumably the PS2) version have similar (if not the same) gameplay an d story, but a regular control scheme. The only exception to this rule so far is SKATE IT. I cant get enough of that game on the wii. I liked it on the 360 and almost bought one JUST for that game (right now). Once I found out they had the wii version I abandonded the 360 idea. Bottom line. If I was buying a true next gen system it would be a 360. Simply because ALL the multi platform games run on it just fine, and there are not enough GOOD first party exclusives on the PS3 to make it worth the extra money.
was not as big a step up from ps1 as is ps3 from ps2.
I like my PS3, it's nice and all. Little Big Planet ate up many hours that i should have spent studying right after release... Sadly the big black monster is once again collecting dust. I'm not going to lie. I play my 360 more. I love xbox-live (although i haven't played with home yet), and nothing comes close to the dynamic number of achievements on the 360. Hell, i bought the PS3 as a blu-ray player, and i've bought a whopping 2 BD movies. Lets face it, sony didn't screw this up completely on their own. A lot of their problems were just bad luck. Late hardware release, game development costs that dwarf that of the competition, and a BluRay format that has see extremely slow adoption amongst casual consumers. Sony hasn't lasted thing long without being an adaptable company. In a few years, when they release the PS4, you can bet that they'll have learned from these mistakes. Sony will be back.
Relate it to a boxing match.... 360 came out swing strong and hard in the first 3 rounds, but has yet to knock down the PS3 which is saving it's energy since it is a 10 round fight. 360 is going to use all it's energy and PS3 will still be fresh for the final rounds of the match....
The only problem with that analogy is that technology doesn't stay fresh. It is VERY POSSIBLE for an Xbox 720 to blow the PS3 out of the water. Especially if they wait for Intel's 8 or 12 core procs. Add Nvidias newest lineup and BAM! You have a PS3 killer. Although it will cost just as much as a PS3 if not more.
Ok, so why are you comparing video and audio media to game consoles? They're completely unrelated, and they also overlap and are updated over the years. Consoles are just systems out for 5 years until their next console is out. And no. The Wii isn't successful because it's not as powerful as the other 2. It's successful because its marketed correctly, isn't expensive to develop for. So don't say the PS3 and 360 can last longer because of the Wii's existence (which is funny, since people like to separate the Wii from them 2 consoles as much as they can... till they try to use it to the PS3/360's advantage). It's got interesting tech that people want to use, that is what the 360 and PS3 needs. Not just more of the same but in a higher resolution. The 10 year thing is an absolute joke. Only poor devs continued to make PS1 games when the PS2 was out, and people still make PS2 games because the instal base of both PS2 and PS3 is mindnumbingly gigantic! TBH I'm surprised more PS2 games haven't been released... Some people need to stop listening to what execs are saying and look at how the industry actually works.
But Sony said themselves they expected 08 to be their best year, and many people (myself included) agreed. Nothing noteworthy happened for the PS3 this year, even MGS didn't sell well. FF13 went to 360 as well, Socom ened up being a pretty bad game, LBP did terrible in sales, Resistance 2 didn't make much of an impact, and now most PS3 users are deriding Home as simple, stale, and boring (check their forums). And now it's been hacked on top of that What else does the PS3 have in the near future? Killzone 2? And? Sony needs to slash the price of this console if they want it to perform, because the average consumer still doesn't give two sh*ts that it plays blu-rays. Most of the people on here probably wouldn't know, because most of the people on QJ are at least semi-technology savvy, and realize that the PS3 offers a great value for the price. Most people don't however, and $400 is still too much for what most people associate with games, a PlayStation. They see $400 game console and right next to it $200 game console that has more and for the most part better games, and the decision is obvious to them. Many do not see $400 game and high-def movie console. And for a lot who do see that, they figure why pay $200 over the cost of 360 if DVD movies are fine for them, which they are for most people. Sony shot themselves in the foot with the pricing ($600 at launch was ridiculous, regardless of blu-ray capabilities), and it will end up costing them a majority of their market share Sad to see Sony go from 1st to 3rd, because they make the best electronics in the world. Everything I own is Sony, my TV, my sound system, my DVD player, my PC, everything.
KZ2, GOW3, Final Fantasy (went to 360 but won't even start development until it's released on PS3) Heavy Rain, White Knight Story, A full Gran Turismo Release..... What does 360 have comming ? Gears 3.....and....uh....Hmm....
I do hope Sony bounce back in the future. A healthy competition is always good.
has only just began to start rolling for sony. give it time, it will pick up momentum, its started with some solid releases, mgs4, LBP, Res2 etc and the recent home. It just needs time before the technology in the ps3 becomes standard, then the xbox will need some revamping to make up ground sony allready set
