Sony responds to NPD figures |
Listed in: News Tags: Microsoft, NPD, PS2, SCEA, Sony
Despite the NPD figures for November, Sony remains confident and upbeat about their performance. Here's the statement that they gave to 1UP:
Sony Computer Entertainment America is very pleased with the NPD data for November, showing outstanding sales for all of its platforms. These figures clearly demonstrate the strength of the PlayStation family of products in the US market. PLAYSTATION 3 remains one of the most sought after items this holiday season, selling through almost immediately in all retailers once placed on store shelves.
We will continue to utilize airfreight delivery for the PLAYSTATION 3 to assure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers through the end of the year. And while initial day-one launch shipment goals weren't achievable due to early manufacturing issues, those problems have been resolved and we do remain focused on having one million PS3's in the pipeline by December 31, 2006.
The six-year old PlayStation 2 continues to dominate the market, outselling all other consoles in November, including much newer systems from the competition. The PS2 also topped the software category, out pacing all other console's sales by almost three times.
The PSP (PlayStation Portable Player) had a very good November as well, seeing a jump in sales of nearly 50% and a strong increase in software sell-through. These sales figures bode very well for SCEA as it offers a computer entertainment system for every taste and budget this holiday season.
So, yeah, Sony didn't meet their 400,000 target, but there's something very familiar about the situation we're in right now. Remember the Xbox 360 launch and the shortage that it faced? Microsoft doesn't have a family of products and a big brand name like the PlayStation's, and look at how many units the Xbox has sold now? What Sony has to focus on now with the PS3 is to get those units shipped. Unless the next games for the PS3 are really really bad, what we have here is a "tortoise and the hare" situation.

Knowing that DS is selling quite profitably, I still began to wonder if there had been any dramatic change in the sales between the two handhelds.
Can anyone show me where I could find a reliable site showing the total sales of both systems since their launches worldwide? (game sales would be great too.)

That is far from negative, as far as I remember the tortoise won, and the tortoise got a slow start, just like the PS3... if anything my post should be flamed for trying to put a positive spin to the news...

S, December 8, 2006 - According to a new Famitsu Marketing survey, Sony's PlayStation Portable is getting walloped in Japan by Nintendo's DS. In November alone, the PSP sold a mere 86,000 units compared to nearly 550,000 DS Lites. More shocking are numbers for the first 11 months of the year, which show that Nintendo may have all but closed the door on PSP in Japan. The DS and DS Lite have sold more than 7.5 million units so far this year, with PSP selling just 1.6 million units.
Further troubling for Sony's portable system are its software sales in comparison to Nintendo. PSP has sold 2.8 million games to date this year, while Nintendo has sold 27 million games. This is what is referred to in business as a clobbering.
The battle is a bit closer in the U.S., though Nintendo retains a strong lead month-to-month. In November, likely the busiest sales month of the year, twice as many DS Lites were sold as PSPs.
Publicly, Sony has shown nothing but confidence for the future of the PSP. Despite having weaker sales numbers compared to DS, the PSP had a strong year in terms of quality software. Nine of the twelve PSP games to receive a 9.0 or higher from IGN were released in 2006.

"After all, who wants to spend £500- £600 (?) on a machine that after all, is just for playing games on?"
Correction:
"After all, who wants to spend £500- £600, when all they want is a gaming machine?"
PS3 isn't just a gaming machine, you just want it to be just a gaming machine. Sorry, but that wasn't Sony's intention. Otherwise they would've went the same route Nintendo did. But why would they do that when they still have the ps2 to profit from?

"You cant play infrastructure yet as it hasn't been released. It WILL be released sometime in the near future, as a set date hasn't been announced. It will be included in a downloadable patch (can download via the game itself, or from a PC) that will contain new weapons, a new chapter, and the infrastructure mode. The patches won't end there, as promised by Guerrilla, but Guerrilla also has 120+ people working on the KZ L extras and KZPS3, so please be patient."

On PSP though, we have GTA, Killzone, Socom, MOH, sports/racing games, etc. This list just prove the fact that the DS is for kids, and the PSP is for a more mature audience. Whether people like to admit it or not, its the truth...the statistics don't lie

From Wikipedia
World wide shipped figures
Sega Dreamcast: 10.6 Million sold as of December 2004 (Japan: 2.30, Other: 8.30)
PlayStation 2: 106.23 Million shipped as of June 30, 2006 (Japan: 23.55, USA: 42.97, Europe: 39.71)
Nintendo GameCube: 21.00 Million sold as of June 30, 2006 (Japan: 4.01, The Americas: 12.27, Other: 4.72)
Xbox: more than 24 Million sold as of May 10, 2006
My point isn't that the Dreamcast didn't have good games, my point is that it didn't sell as well as it should have considering it's technical superiority (possibly because the competing consoles were cheaper.)
As for the PS3 not just being a gaming machine, it's competing against the XBOX 360 and the Nintendo Wii isn't it? If it isn't just a gaming machine, what features does it have to offer for the average gamer who just wants a games console? What is it doing competing in the games console market? Who IS it for if it's not for people who just want to play games? Really, I'm not looking to diss Sony, I'm just looking for answers, I was considering getting a PS3 until I saw the price tag and would hate to see it drop out of the market for being too advanced.

Anyways, your diss on the Dreamcast blindsided me from your main argument which I kinda agree with now. However, PS3 isn't just a gaming console because it has other features as well:
-It's the cheapest Blu-Ray player out so far. (I think)
-It can run Linux.
-Web Browsing
-Plays Music
-Interacts with psp
-View pictures
-And apparently cooks a mean steak. (That...doesn't count.)
And I'm sure there will be more features as fw updates come around on a regular basis.
The targeted audience doesn't necessarily set a product's identity in stone. I guess you could say the same thing for Nintendo and Microsoft's console since they have dvd features and one of em has a hd. If you wanted to call any of the next gen systems just gaming machines, then the features that stray away from gaming must not be present.

Oh, and I still think that whilst some of Nintendo's games might be a bit too cute and cheerful for some people's taste, they're still kinda fun, and surely fun is what matters, isn't it?
