Sony responds to NPD figures

NPDDespite the NPD figures for November, Sony remains confident and upbeat about their performance. Here's the statement that they gave to 1UP:

Sony Computer Entertainment America is very pleased with the NPD data for November, showing outstanding sales for all of its platforms. These figures clearly demonstrate the strength of the PlayStation family of products in the US market. PLAYSTATION 3 remains one of the most sought after items this holiday season, selling through almost immediately in all retailers once placed on store shelves.

We will continue to utilize airfreight delivery for the PLAYSTATION 3 to assure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers through the end of the year. And while initial day-one launch shipment goals weren't achievable due to early manufacturing issues, those problems have been resolved and we do remain focused on having one million PS3's in the pipeline by December 31, 2006.

The six-year old PlayStation 2 continues to dominate the market, outselling all other consoles in November, including much newer systems from the competition. The PS2 also topped the software category, out pacing all other console's sales by almost three times.

The PSP (PlayStation Portable Player) had a very good November as well, seeing a jump in sales of nearly 50% and a strong increase in software sell-through. These sales figures bode very well for SCEA as it offers a computer entertainment system for every taste and budget this holiday season.

So, yeah, Sony didn't meet their 400,000 target, but there's something very familiar about the situation we're in right now. Remember the Xbox 360 launch and the shortage that it faced? Microsoft doesn't have a family of products and a big brand name like the PlayStation's, and look at how many units the Xbox has sold now? What Sony has to focus on now with the PS3 is to get those units shipped. Unless the next games for the PS3 are really really bad, what we have here is a "tortoise and the hare" situation.

lol the gba still outsells the psp. WHy dont they still make gba games so we could emulkate them? The gba had almost no good nintendo made software and all of a sudden with the ds all these old franchises are resurrected like mario and yoshi.

A friend of mine claimed a few days ago that the PSP is wiping the floor with the DS sales-wise to the extent that the DS is doomed for failure.

Knowing that DS is selling quite profitably, I still began to wonder if there had been any dramatic change in the sales between the two handhelds.

Can anyone show me where I could find a reliable site showing the total sales of both systems since their launches worldwide? (game sales would be great too.)

There is a story where the overconfident hare who is far ahead takes nap, while the tortoise slowly catches up and finishes 1st. Sony is a giant tortoise and despite all the criticism it's received, it will eventually dominate.

That is far from negative, as far as I remember the tortoise won, and the tortoise got a slow start, just like the PS3... if anything my post should be flamed for trying to put a positive spin to the news...

it wasnt BECAUSE OF sony, it was due to Segas own pitfalls in relesing a console marketed wrong, with poor games, poor PR. People didnt have to buy the Playstation, it was down to peoples choice, so Sony cant be blamed for Segas de3mise, only Sega and the consumer can be blamed.

And the fact PS2 still oustells every other home console shows just how much power the Playstation brand has. Whether you like it or not, its alot bigger than we all thought it would be

Yeah, they do still make them, but my local stores have cut inventory down to I'd say 20 titles or less. There's so many consoles out now that they don't have room to stock a bunch of games for all of them. GBA is getting squeezed out by the DS Lite, 360, PS2, PSP, PS3, Wii, and even a few GC titles still out there. My local Best Buys stores don't even stock ANY original Xbox games anymore. There's 8 other systems, not counting PC's, that they're stocking for and there's simply no room for everything.

http://uk.psp.ign.com/articles/750/750197p1.html

S, December 8, 2006 - According to a new Famitsu Marketing survey, Sony's PlayStation Portable is getting walloped in Japan by Nintendo's DS. In November alone, the PSP sold a mere 86,000 units compared to nearly 550,000 DS Lites. More shocking are numbers for the first 11 months of the year, which show that Nintendo may have all but closed the door on PSP in Japan. The DS and DS Lite have sold more than 7.5 million units so far this year, with PSP selling just 1.6 million units.

Further troubling for Sony's portable system are its software sales in comparison to Nintendo. PSP has sold 2.8 million games to date this year, while Nintendo has sold 27 million games. This is what is referred to in business as a clobbering.

The battle is a bit closer in the U.S., though Nintendo retains a strong lead month-to-month. In November, likely the busiest sales month of the year, twice as many DS Lites were sold as PSPs.

Publicly, Sony has shown nothing but confidence for the future of the PSP. Despite having weaker sales numbers compared to DS, the PSP had a strong year in terms of quality software. Nine of the twelve PSP games to receive a 9.0 or higher from IGN were released in 2006.

I find it amusing that none of those DS games on that list don't catch my attention. However, a good amount of the PSP games on the list, even though they don't sell as well as the DS games, they sound fun and catch my eye on checking them out. I'll admit that the DS has a lot of original titles, but they all sound too childish for me. Maybe what the PSP needs is more original titles like the DS and not more of the same PS2 to PSP ports, although they are still fun to play IMO. A price drop would do good too. The DS is the perfect handheld for parents to entertain their bratty kids in long trips. It's cheap, it can take a lot of damage, it has a wide selection of rated E for everyone games, and the battery lasts a considerable amount o

of time. The PSP is more for grown-ups. Great selection of good-looking racing games, sports, shooters, and even addictive puzzles, etc. I wouldn't change my PSP for any other handheld out there. As far as I'm concerned, Nintendo never loses money when selling their consoles. They are all for business and getting richer. However, Sony loses a considerable amount of money everytime someone buys a console of them. They are all for their fans.

# PS3 Too ExpensiveDMS 2006-12-09 12:53
I can't help feeling with the Nintendo Wii/XBOX360/PS3 that Sony have massively misjudged the market. The PS3 may techniquely outshine the Wii but what will make or break a company in the gaming market is the GAMES. I have already read reports of the PS3 overheating, or not being that much better graphically than it's competition, but even if it is graphically superior to the Wii, so what? If Nintendo release enough games that are exclusive to the Wii and are entertaining to play, they will sell better than the PS3, wont they? Does anybody else remember when the Sega Dreamcast came out? The Dreamcast was competing with the Playstation and the N64, and at the time I think I'm right in saying that it was techniquely better than the N64, having better specs & graphics, but it failed because there weren't enough good games to sell it. The N64 had games like Mario, Mario Kart, Goldeneye, and later on F-Zero X and Perfect Dark when the Dreamcast had games like . . . ? At the end of the day, the PS3 is a GAMES console, and the GAMES are what will make or break any console. Nintendo have (I think I'm right in saying) more experience in the gaming market, and I feel that it's starting to really show. If Sony screw up with the PS3, (as I suspect they may do), then if Nintendo recognise that their new console appeals to an older generation and release a new range of games to match the market, then I think that they have a real chance to dominate the market. After all, who wants to spend £500- £600 (?) on a machine that after all, is just for playing games on?

First off, piss on you for talking crap about the Dreamcast. No good games? Have you even played with the system? Where do you think Soul Calibur + Guilty Gear X originated from? How about Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, PSO, Trickstyle, Skies of Arcadia, Silver and Power Stone? As far as I'm concerned, Dreamcast was better than N64 and Gamecube combined.

"After all, who wants to spend £500- £600 (?) on a machine that after all, is just for playing games on?"

Correction:

"After all, who wants to spend £500- £600, when all they want is a gaming machine?"

PS3 isn't just a gaming machine, you just want it to be just a gaming machine. Sorry, but that wasn't Sony's intention. Otherwise they would've went the same route Nintendo did. But why would they do that when they still have the ps2 to profit from?

regarding infrastructure on kill zone:

"You cant play infrastructure yet as it hasn't been released. It WILL be released sometime in the near future, as a set date hasn't been announced. It will be included in a downloadable patch (can download via the game itself, or from a PC) that will contain new weapons, a new chapter, and the infrastructure mode. The patches won't end there, as promised by Guerrilla, but Guerrilla also has 120+ people working on the KZ L extras and KZPS3, so please be patient."

just goes to show that children keep the DS alive, and adults keep the PSP alive. Look at the big DS games...mario, nintendo dogs, pokemon, yoshi, bratz, over the hedge....ya...I'm not going to play those, sorry...But a kids would ;)

On PSP though, we have GTA, Killzone, Socom, MOH, sports/racing games, etc. This list just prove the fact that the DS is for kids, and the PSP is for a more mature audience. Whether people like to admit it or not, its the truth...the statistics don't lie :D

Fair enough, I didn't ever play on a Dreamcast, I just remember the Dreamcast section of games shops being rather thin in some shops and it being Sega's last (I think) console.

From Wikipedia

World wide shipped figures

Sega Dreamcast: 10.6 Million sold as of December 2004 (Japan: 2.30, Other: 8.30)

PlayStation 2: 106.23 Million shipped as of June 30, 2006 (Japan: 23.55, USA: 42.97, Europe: 39.71)

Nintendo GameCube: 21.00 Million sold as of June 30, 2006 (Japan: 4.01, The Americas: 12.27, Other: 4.72)

Xbox: more than 24 Million sold as of May 10, 2006

My point isn't that the Dreamcast didn't have good games, my point is that it didn't sell as well as it should have considering it's technical superiority (possibly because the competing consoles were cheaper.)

As for the PS3 not just being a gaming machine, it's competing against the XBOX 360 and the Nintendo Wii isn't it? If it isn't just a gaming machine, what features does it have to offer for the average gamer who just wants a games console? What is it doing competing in the games console market? Who IS it for if it's not for people who just want to play games? Really, I'm not looking to diss Sony, I'm just looking for answers, I was considering getting a PS3 until I saw the price tag and would hate to see it drop out of the market for being too advanced.

Yeah quality is better than quantity luckily Nintendo wins there too. Oh and Nintendo is kicking the crap out of the PSP in the states too DS sold a little over 900,000 last month, PSP sold less than half that, a little over 400,000.

# HmmWarLord 2006-12-09 21:56
Well numbers don't lie, but they only measure quantity, not quality. And quality is more flexible and varies from each individual. IMHO, the only reason I think Nintendo does so well is because there are more kids who play video games than adults. I remember as a kid I would play just about anything no matter how corny it would've seemed to me now.

Anyways, your diss on the Dreamcast blindsided me from your main argument which I kinda agree with now. However, PS3 isn't just a gaming console because it has other features as well:

-It's the cheapest Blu-Ray player out so far. (I think)

-It can run Linux.

-Web Browsing

-Plays Music

-Interacts with psp

-View pictures

-And apparently cooks a mean steak. (That...doesn't count.)

And I'm sure there will be more features as fw updates come around on a regular basis.

The targeted audience doesn't necessarily set a product's identity in stone. I guess you could say the same thing for Nintendo and Microsoft's console since they have dvd features and one of em has a hd. If you wanted to call any of the next gen systems just gaming machines, then the features that stray away from gaming must not be present.

# Doesn't matterGuest 2006-12-09 22:29
That doesn't make the DS better than the PSP. Have you seen the list of sold games posted above? They are all aimed at a childish audience. Hell, I think I can count all of the NDS games rated M for Mature with my hands. Nintendo is smart. They know that there are millions of wealthy american baby boomers out there with bratty kids to take care. They sell a considerably cheap popular handheld with a giant library of rated E for everyone games. Parents wont buy a PSP for their kids. It's "expensive" comparing it to the DS, it's fragile, and it doesn't really have much games that a kid can safely play.

# Hmmm, still debatingDMS 2006-12-10 00:50
No, of course this generation of games consoles are not soley for playing games on, but the selection games available for the consoles will probably have a larger impact on their sales than the technical features will. My main concern with the PS3 is whether it will offer enough to justify being as expensive as it is to the average consumer. I suppose really it comes down to what Sony do with the power that they have unleashed on the market. If they can do enough with the machine to warrent it's price (it has to be as expensive as it is because of the technical components it contains) then the PS3 could be a versatile machine and a huge success. But Linux, Blu-ray and PSP compatibility still don't convince me to fork out an extra £300 odd pounds for it yet (over the XBOX, Wii, or even PS2). I guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer to see where Sony are going with this one . . .

Oh, and I still think that whilst some of Nintendo's games might be a bit too cute and cheerful for some people's taste, they're still kinda fun, and surely fun is what matters, isn't it?

What exactly would make PS3's price justifiable? If you're gonna say good games, then you might as well wait a year. As you can see it took that long for Xbox to come out with some hot titles. And as you said, the games will make or break a console. I beleive game developers have yet to even scratch the surface on the ps3's capabilities. Sony made an amazing console, but it'd be ashame if game developers end up getting too lazy and greedy to even bother to unleach it's full potential.
