Sony posts financial report: PlayStation hardware sales down

PlayStation sales decline - Image 1Despite the PlayStation Group's confidence that they are the least likely to be affected by Sony's cost-cutting measures, the numbers they posted in their latest financial report are worrying.

According to their quarterly report, the games division is down 32% in revenue, compared to last year. Which is not to say they didn't rake in a huge amount. They took in US$ 393 billion in revenues.

Sales of their hardware are also down on all three platforms. The PlayStation 3 dropped 440,000 units to 4.46 million sold. The PSP suffered worse, losing 680,000 units, selling only 5.08 million. The PS2 is the worst off - understandably so though - down 2.88 million, selling only 2.52 million.

But numbers aside, sales performance is only as good as how much effort Sony is willing to put into making their hardware a more appealing buy. A price cut would do that very effectively.

» "... PlayStation hardware sales down"

how surprising >.>

Sony has a lot of good products but just about EVERYTHING they sell is so expensive...but i guess you get a very high quality product that won't break down on you if you have to pay alot :)

(the ps3 is NOT expensive given all of the stuff it has.)

still, like it says in the article, a price cut would definatly increase sales.

I wish you would stop pushing for a price cut. Whether or not it actually happens, you're creating a false hope, which makes more people wait, hurting sony. I highly doubt you have inside info about a price cut, so just cut the crap

How the hell are they gonnagive aprice cut sony is already losing so much money. Giving it aprice cut would definetly kill sony.

They are probably they would'nt have made the ps3 so expensive during this economy

And allthe confidence they had (sigh)

» hmmm

price cut could = win tbh cuz most people go for the 360 cuz its the most cheapest next gen console on the parket atm but if they lowered the price more people will be like wow ps3 has more features and the price has gone down now ill buy it.

» yeah

I think it's proof definitive that the PSP is now on the way out. Any devs considering new titles for the platform will be well across this news and most likely pull the pin.

I expect 2009 will see even less titles worth note coming out on the PSP.

Sony lost this generation to a smarter Nintendo outfit for the family/kid market and Microsoft for the Adult market.

The only decent offering is the PS3 which is over priced in a very competitive market and merely represents a decent value blueray player which is picking up steam.

And to think people laughed at Nintendo going for odd ball solutions like the Wii...

» I also don't think Sony should give a price cut

But for all the cheapskates out there they should consider doing a 50.00 price cut on the 80 gigs for a limited time while KZ2 launches. Or a BC non emotion engine 80gig PS3 Killzone 2 bundle.

» you think that matters?

you really think people wait because of what QJ says? lol. they'd wait for a price cut if QJ didnt exist

and where does it say or even hint that QJ has "inside info"? Isaac was only stating a price cut would help, nothing more, nothing less.

» hardware subsidies.

I didn't know the hardware subsidy made so little difference to their bottom line. The could give away the hardware for free and it would only cost them 1.5% of their current software revenue!
