Sony Plays the Numbers Game: 20 Million PSPs Shipped |

The numbers have spoken. 20 million PSPs have been shipped out of Sony's factories to eagerly awaiting consumers. Hold your horses now, the operative word is shipped, not sold. However, considering that overstocking doesn't happen often to most Gaming companies, Sony's bigwigs must have figured that the shipment won't stay gathering dust on video retailer's shelves.
The PSP is enjoying more popularity in the American and European markets compared to the Asian market. And since the Nintendo DS is Japan's top seller, this has lead to a numbers rivalry between the two handhelds. I don't know about you, but I am seeing an underdog-come-from-behind-win for the PSP. The Christmas season is coming up, and will all the development the PSP homebrew scene is having, it won't be surprising to see people flocking stores to buy PSPs for their friends - maybe even for themselves.

this is good news for sony, if they can beat out the ds it will be great to see how the ps3 holds up against the wii. FIRST POST WOOHOO

The the authors prediction is that since Sony can ship 20 million PSPs it will outsell the DS. That's pretty funny.
sure psp is selling well but the DS is unstoppable and with that new ds lite design and all the great games out psp doesn't stand a chance

If people won't buy a 250 dollar PSP for games, why would they buy it for homebrew (Besides ISO loaders, which just proves that the PSP doesnt really have that many good games to begin with)

But the best seller franchises are getting expectacular ports on the PSP (Like Tekken). This game gave me faith on what to expect in the future, and is the kind of game i'll never see on Ninento's DS.

PSPs shipped without Resident Evil, Silent Hill, God Of War, FINAL FANTASY, Ace Combat, Dungeon Siege, Vice City Stories, Metal Gear SOLID, Monster Hunter Freedom 2, Lumines II, Loco Roco, Tales Of..., PSOne emulator (7000+ games on the go HAS to be a reason to buy the PSP...) and TONS of other Sony games and other non-Sony ones.
PLUS - The shippings is what matters to Sony. Not the sales.
NOTE: Resident Evil and God of War may not be announced YET, but you that they WILL be. But you, DS fans, don't want to imagine what WILL happen if the come out... But even if they don't... You're finished...

I'm pretty sure the DS (lite) will keep the poleposition, and that's ok when you think about how long Nintendo is in the handheld market and that they made a good console.
On the other hand, the PSP did a great job so far as well. Sony is new on the handheld market and has the more expensive console - but shipped 20 million PSPs nevertheless!
Not to mention that the PSP came out in September in Europe, not at the same date as the DS did.

Yea resident evil already came out on DS, even RE4 on GC didn't help it, and u expect iot to help psp?? GoW isnt big enough to help psp as well. ps2's biggest franchise, GTA helped psp sell better then ds and DS still has zelda, FF3 AND pokemon games coming up that will PSP fanboys like u will feel it, PSP will be finished off instead.

Star Fox Command, Yoshi's Island 2, Final Fantasy III, Pokemon Diamond, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Kirby, Harvest Moon DS, MM ZX, PW: Ace Attorney, NDB, S2P to be released.
DS has the entire GBA backlog, and you don't have to pay for them all over again just to play them.
You can try to call out on kiddy games not mattering, but fact is, these games sell and will matter when it comes to salesfigures compared to psp.
I want to see games like Residente evil, war of the monsters, metal gear solid, silent hill (coming soon), The PS1 emulator, Harvest moon and all those pretty cool games that would make the PSP the best handheld!
I love my DS, has tons of great games and is an all round superb package. But I will also be considering a PSP in the next few months.
The main reason for this is movies on the large screen (from memory stick, not UMD!!!). But can anyone with experience on the GP2X tell me how the screen compares with PSP? It is cheaper after all
Unfortunately for Sony, most people I hear of (anecdotal evidence has no cred, I know) purchasing a PSP are doing so for movies, homebrew or ISOs. This can't be good for their profits, considering how much equipment is squeezed into the device. Mind you I can't talk, all my DS games run off Supercard

it was announced today that nintendo has sold over 10 million ds lites in japan. they also sold that quanity faster than any other console or handheld has done in Japan ever. yet we get news that psp has shipped 20 million worldwide, i figured as much they are setting in all the walmarts in the area i live, there are almost as many of them not getting bought as there are 360's.

Regardless of sales figures,I must say that I enjoy playing my PSP moreso than I do the DS. Sure,the DS is obviously the portable system of choice in Japan,but does that really mean anything? The only people I see playing the DS are either children under the age of 18 or a Nintendo-supporting Japanophile.

Many of the DS fans see this article because they are browsing on www.qj.net, not www.nds.qj.net. I recommend you browse using the main site, there are many interesting articles on a variety of topics to view.
On the subject of DS vs PSP, each device has its ups and downs, make your choice subjectively, not because you don't want to look like a kiddy.
Either:
A) Buy a PSP. It has some good games, great graphics, thriving homebrew scene, plays movies + mp3s
B) Buy a DS. Has lots of great, fun, original and innovative games
C) Buy both. Why be a fanboy when there is so much to offer on both sides?
D) Buy neither, save your money and spend it elsewhere
How can you compare the DS to the PSP. The DS is a childrens toy. I can sit in bed with my PSP and play a game, then go out to the internet, then watch a movie or tv show I downloaded, the listen to some MP3's. Can the DS do this....NO. I am not knocking the DS, I am sure it is great for kids, I would not give my kid a PSP, but me a 36 year old dad have one and love it. The DS out sells the PSP because parents will spend the $129 for something the kids can toss around.

thares not that big of a market yet for an adult aimed portible game system. nintendo has always had the market in the bag but only to the 6 to 13 market, and as i see it anyone older just stays clear of portibles. so when the psp came out the first thought for most was that it was another kids system, but i think slowly people are seeing it as a more muture portible. for me i have got only 2 portibles 1 an original gameboy (the one with the green LCD screen) when i was 8, and 2 a PSP. cuase after i got older the games for any gameboy just didin't feal that great anymore, and i hoped since i first saw the sized down PSone that thay would make a portible playstation. so what i think im getting at is that sony is not cutting into gameboy buys since thare mainly selling to people that would never buy a gameboy, and that market will only grow when more poeple see how much its not another gamboy
Haha, settle down, don't take things personally. I think you may have me confused with somebody else. I have never said that the PSP was expensive. When you look at the amount of tech built into the small package, it's quite a good deal.
Nor have I claimed that PSP is a bad console. I have always liked it and intend to pick one up one day.
Nor am I a fanboy. Heres a list of consoles that I have had since a kid: NES, Sega Master System II, Sega MegaDrive, SNES, Gameboy, PS1, N64, PS2, Xbox, NDSlite. Consoles I intend to pick up in the near future: PSP, Xbox360, Wii. If it seems like I'm a Nintendo fanboy, it is probably due to the fact that I think they are playing all the right cards at the moment, while Sony seems to be fumbling. I think my sentiments are echoed throughout all forums and blogs around the world.

Well, I suppose you're right about Sony's fumbling thing, but first, I didn't say it was personal, and second, I didn't call YOU fanboy. You seem to be a good gamer, with personal judgement and point of view, even if you're with Nintendo.
However, the PSP hasn't shown its full potential.
Many things will be unveiled for both consoles.
But it's just my opinion that the PSP has more to offer than the DS (in the near and the long future).

I dont realy care that the ds is out selling to the psp, as long as I get good games to keep me playing I am set. Playstation will make other new Portable System because games are to entertain and not an investment so don't compare the Ps3 to the 360 or the wii to the PS3 just be happy you have these new systems to entertain your self with.
Of course DS is selling more than the PSP, it appeals to a more active target market. This not only includes small children but women and people new to the gaming world. I mean, a device with a touchscreen would seem much more user-friendly than a hardcore-looking games machine. The
DS's cheap price tag also contributes to its good sales. I mean, if you're going to buy a kid something to stop them from crying, why not buy the cheapest?

As stated, if not some "superhit" game titles come out, the sales will be even worse with time. Now that Sony hits hard times with resellers withdrawing UMD movies completely, the PS3 and other stuff sucking up money, it will be hard to compete. Homebrew? Wait for Sony heading to firmware 3.0 and doing everything in newly shipped PSP's to prevent homebrew from running even drawing modchips useless (new hardware).
Additionally, the (saved) christmas money goes to one of the new consoles (Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, ...) not the PSP. With the Wii to sell at a prize level which even challenges the PSP and all the hype around the Wii, it is more likely that the Wii is going to be the "big hit".
I think PSP is much better than the DS.

The Ds may have sold more units currently, but as the best games will come out for Psp, I'm quite sure Psp will take the lead.
As for getting Ps1 emulator, the Ds has only to show off it's Gba slot.
Both are great consoles, but both of them have it's good and bad sides.
What people forget is that almost the complete difference between the DS and the PSP is Japan. In the West, the two are selling almost equally well. Also, while the DS is selling more software units , the average price per unit is also lower.
Actual software revenue in the U.S. for June was 77% of that of the DS, and that was the month that the Lite was released.

I don't know what people are talking about when they say DS games are cheaper. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow cost me 42.99 plus tax. And Valkyrie Profile Lenneth cost me 44.99 plus tax. That is like three bucks difference. And we all know that Silent Hill Origins and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops are gonna sell big time. Face it those are two great franchises that you will never see on the DS. It's a fact, look it up check google.
* Handheld market is a younger market (due to Nintendo owning the market for most of it's lifespan).
* DSLite sells incredibly well in Japan due to a current Fad (soduko, brain training)
* PSP has broaden the market introducing older gamers into handhelds. those folks who never touched a gameboy.
* Based on time in market PSP is beating out the DS in both EU and the US by big numbers.
* Many DSLites bought are from the same customers who bought a DS. PSP owners have no need to re-buy one because it was built cool and sexy the first time.
* The DS and its games are cheaper than the PSP and it's games.
* DS has more hit games than the PSP
* DS expanding the market with new types of games.
* PSP expanding the market with new functionality.
* DS future is completely reliant on Nintendo's ability to create games. Third parties do poorly on the system. Nintendo must continue to release AAA games.
* With better games, there is no doubt the PSP would have left the DS in the dust (in the west at least)
* PSP has yet to have a must have game in Japan. Monster Hunter being the top game currently. Hopefully FF7CC might change this.
* PSP is not, I repeat is not doing poorly in Japan. Is only that the DSLite is doing astronomically well. The PSP sells very well in Japan.
* When the brain training craze is over, Nintendo's must scramble to create the next craze (people bore easy).
* PSP does have a casual gamer market. Actually most hardcore gamers don't take the handheld market seriously. \
* PSP library is getting much much better and in the near future It should get it's own Halo or GTA, for now we'll just wait and see.
* DS games sell better in the US because of PSP homebrew. PSP hardcore gamers don't want to upgrade and many just pirate the games
I also see the PSP wining out in the long run. I see this being played out like the PS vs. N64. The PSP just offers so much more (out of the box) than the DS to so many more people that Sony's true challenge is making people aware. They also need their download service (Connect) to come out with a bang and I assume it will once the PS3 comes around. Price is also a concern (currently it's at $199 and sometimes lower for the core version). If the PSP can drop their price to $149 this Christmas, It will dominate the holiday season. GPS, camera, Movie and music downloads, and game downloads should make this gadget the must have gadget of the year. Well there is my screwed up analysis. Flame on. I have to admit I don't own a DSLite and most of my opinions come from facts I have read about the system. I do own a PSP but wouldn't call myself a fanboy but then again most fanboys wouldn't =P.

both systems are good....case closed on that...the psp wont go away they said that about the first xbox...but back to what made me comment..lol which is a laugh just like sony 20mill shipped...and dumbass nintendo saying 25 million sold ...true to that but they are counting both systems and i bet alot those who bought the ds light werent first time buyers but someone upgrading to the smaller version so really comparing both is like comparing both sales of the ps2 .......the small and big version....im sure you can count it as a sale ...but was it bought to replace a machine or did it attrack a new gamer....hmm ponder that...both sides have there lil thing to try boost how well the system is doing both are in a sense mis leading if you think about it...in the end both systems are here to stay last time i knew the psp had about 6 million or so sold thats been awhile back...and last time i checked they arent collection to much dust on store shelves...soon the ds lite sales will die off as soon as everyone uprades tto the smaller one ..then new comers and alike will boost sales after that...bottom line is each system serves its purpse...they are to differnt to compare....ones aimed more for younger crowd...the other at the more hardcore people

Those that are serious value-for-money and graphics critics would definitely go for the powerful PSP system.
Those that are much less hardcore and would rather go for short bursts of gameplay and live classic characters would go for the NDS.
In my opinion (neither from a 'fanboy' as many people call it or from a blabbering idiot who can't spot the pros and cons of both consoles) i would pick the PSP. And i will explain just why...
1. I enjoy games actually WORTH their money. Games in my opinion are really over priced and i would like games that i need to spend a breathtaking number of hours on. (Examples of games worth their money are GTA:LCS, DAXTER, MGA2, MKDS and SM64DS.) Im sorry to say that the PSP has realeased many more of this type of game whereas the DS churns out a poor blocky Need for Speed that lasts um...2 days MAX.
2.The PSP has a terrifiying amount of potential. We are already promised an official PSone emulator capable of playing these games at full speed which kicks the crap outta any GBA game im sorry to say and many will agree.
3. It is a power motherf***er of a console and considering it has graphics that that kick the crap out of old PS2 agmes and compete with the present ones. Trust me, play Daxter or Metal Gear Acid 2 and you will unload your bowels in your pants.
And that i think summerises it. Its nearly midnight and ive spent nearly 6 minutes of my life responding to the most useless topic of my life. Whats the point of debating which console is better? Buy both i say.

Meaning the two systems can't be compaired nor should be. There is no handheld war psp does it's thing and the ds does thiers. The only people who seem to not wander around the other qj forums seem to be playstation people, but why is that? Mainly because all they will and ever get is playstation... now how can this be a true opinion if we already think the others are bunk? So if you want true unadulturated biased opinions come on down to the psp/ps3 forums!! hooray
