Sony offering free full download for WipEout Pure and Go! Sudoku

Ó

We just a got a tip from one of QJ's loyal readers, PSPPICTURETHREAD (aka sugard0), concerning the PlayStation Portable (PSP), the official PSP Store, and downloading full games. We know freebies don't always jive with Sony so this bit really caught our attention.

Accordingly, the official PSP store for UK is offering free downloadable contents for our dear handhelds. This is rather normal as the community has gotten several movies, demos, and whatnot from that site in the past. What's striking about this is that on the said store, there's a listing for video games WipEout Pure and Go! Sudoku. Beneath them is a title that says "Download full game now."

Being the suckers for freebies that we are, we immediately clicked the link to see where it will take us. We were then asked about our country of origin and then, to our surprise, we were directed to a page dedicated for downloading every content imaginable other than full games. We tried looking for the above mentioned titles but we were unable to do so.

Despite that, this is rather interesting. As our tipster put it, "Why would Sony say something like that if it's not being planned in the first place?" And we can't help but agree. If you want to see it for yourselves, the Read link below should take you to the store's official page.

by - 2007-03-27 13:04:07

Yes, but then again they also used a picture from PGR3 in an advert for Gran Turismo on their own website.

Time for the hackers to get to work! They could exploit this so people without a modded psp can play homebrew games!

by - 2007-03-27 15:32:07
uhh

if it only says download full game now how do we know it is free. doesn't matter to me, i already have a dump of it on my psp
by - 2007-03-27 15:43:03
wtf?

If this is true, then this MUST BE one of the worst marketing strategies that I have ever seen. The PSP is failing because of ISOs just like the Dreamcast did. Wipeout Pure was the ONLY PSP game to reach over 1 million sales (barely), and now Sony is going to LET people do exactly what they try to stop with firware upgrades????
by - 2007-03-27 16:39:51
hmm

might be smart to distribute this way. It makes buying a game much more impulsive and won't require you to really get off your butt when the psp has the store integration finished. I don't see how it would hurt the situation considering that ISOs already exist.
by - 2007-03-27 18:31:36
ihih

imagine it would be in eboot form right? or iso?
by - 2007-03-27 18:46:11
Laurel

F*ck Sony. Luring us in with false promises of booze and free games. D:
by - 2007-03-27 18:51:35
this is questionable....

they r selling that game.. now its free... but why!!! what if theres a detector there.... what if it detects that ur psp is cfw then brick it.....
by - 2007-03-27 18:57:59
Damn SOny

putting things out like this but unable to be reached....i hate sony....they gotta fix this man
by - 2007-03-27 19:01:11
bad,,,

i think there is a bricker inside it....
by - 2007-03-27 19:03:19
Ha

The day sony gives out a full game for free is the day that oil company CEO's find their consciences.
by - 2007-03-27 19:38:59
HEY

if sony made the official firmwares be able to boot this backup of the game, what if somebody hacked that code to make other backups run on official firmware? eh? eh?! maybe a downgrader for some of the unluckies...? lets discuss!
by - 2007-03-27 20:58:13
der

Never going to work it needs to be an encrypted eboot, no one knows how to make one without the dev kit.
by - 2007-03-27 21:05:56
lol

You're an idiot. If the Dreamcast failed due to ISOs, don't you think the PSX would have gone down the tube as well? And as for the PSP failing due to piracy... Mother of god. The PSP is failing because handheld gaming is usually targetted at casual gamers, and there aren't a lot of 'fun' (I say fun as in easy to pick up and play for a bit) games on the PSP. Not to mention it's price, or the fact that is produced by a company whose mission statement seems to include 'Screw our customers'. manaox2 is right if you ask me, as not only would it be more impulsive, it would increase the sale of larger mem sticks, and do away with the horror that is the UMD
by - 2007-03-27 21:13:30
No...

Sony doesn't even have the full download up on there. And there's no chance of having something detect if you have custom firmware, then bricking it. They could get sued for that.

About the dreamcast failing...

The dreamcast failed due to it being a system which wasnt marketed at the right time and because of the problem with piracy. The reason the psx didnt fail because of piracy was because to get the copied version of a game to run on a psx it would require a mod chip or some other alteration wheras the dreamcast could boot up copied games without the need of a mod chip (this was found by paradox?). As for the psp failing, im afraid to say that game production as awhole is starting to slip more from every day releases (when initially launched back in 2005) to more focused releases etc... MGS:PO, MH, and other recently released games.

when i click the link to dl go sudoku, select uk (i live in the uk) then nothing relating to sudoku appears but when i click wipeoutpure all i get are the downloadable content packs that have been around for ages!
by - 2007-03-28 09:32:06
cool

Maybe this will open places for ISO's on other firmwares
by - 2007-03-28 09:34:34
nice one $ony

How about giving me free s*it for my PS3? $ony is a bunch of greedy jewish f*cks. I'm getting sick of being left out.
by - 2007-03-28 09:45:09
I agree

so do you want to meet later and f*ck?
by - 2007-03-28 09:48:32
sigh....

I love my PS3 I just bought, but I'm already disapointed. How come everybody gets something for free but me? I only bought it now because I thought I could get a free TV. Who cares I already have that game on PSP.
by - 2007-03-28 14:51:51
Well...

PSN is free for a start
by - 2007-03-28 18:26:03

by - 2007-03-29 04:15:33
Even if

Even if you choose UK you will not find the full downloads. I clicked UK and then went to copy the link for the Full Game and pasted it only to lead me to the old pack and skin download section with no full game in sight.
by digiplay - 2007-03-29 06:02:49
Need Help!

Maybe it only works with 3.30 firmware? And maybe it will be avalable to download only from a PSP itself! If anyone has successfully downloaded the full version please can you leave a reply or if anyone knows how to? Thanks, Digiplay
