Nintendo, Sony, MS warn of possible hardware shortages - Image 1With Christmas just a little more than a month away, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are making their preparations for the expected holiday rush. But even as the three begin stockpiling their corresponding game systems, they are also sending out word that they may still experience hardware shortages for the UK region. Here was David Yarnton's statement regarding Nintendo's Wii and DS stocks for this year season:

Every year it seems to happen with stock being tight, and I don't think that this year is going to be any different. We've got regular stock coming in. In terms of demand, we can't predict whether that will be enough at the moment – probably not. But you can't just turn on a tap with hardware.

Here was the statement from a spokesman of Sony Computer Entertainment's UK branch regarding the PS3, PSP and PS2:

This year the challenge for PlayStation UK is logistical. It continues to be tight, but we continue to do our best to ensure a flow of stock is available to our customers in this all important buying season.

And finally, the word from Microsoft's regional VP (UK) Chris Lewis regarding their Xbox 360 supplies:

We're working hard to make sure that shortages don't happen. Inevitably the odd pocket of the EMEA region will have the odd blip, but weÂ’ve got a lot better at this over the years.

We advise the readers that the best remedy for shortages (at least on your part) is to do some early shopping. We'll let you know if the companies make any more related statements in the near future.

Pretty sure there will be plenty of ps3's rolling in dust on the shelves since mgs4 isn't coming out for a long long time and 360 has a kabillion great games out. Oh well but I mean ps3 has blueray right? Oh wait did I meantion there is a $100 hddvd player out now at walmart? Double burn. Good luck next round sony.

» Sure.

"To this end, each company's sent out their corresponding representative to reassure the fans that they'll do what they can to keep the expected holiday (relatively) sane."

Bull. These companies purposely manufacture short supply to get everyone going stir crazy, indirectly increasing demand. People itching to get their hands on hardly-available items ***** about it to their friends, which equals free and constant advertising to others.

» there are still plenty in my town

There was a man-made shortage of 360 end of Oct since they are all re-called for repackage for the Holiday special. I could walk into a store and get one yesterday though.

There are TONS of PS3 around. PS3 I see everywhere outnumber Wii or 360 5+ to 1. So if you really really really really really want a PS3 come to Vancouver BC!

Wii are still around but I haven't seen a whole lot but then some local car dealer managed to promise you buy a car you get a Wii so I don't think this is that hard to find...

» I agree with this.

Down here in florida we had shortages of Wii before any holiday.

» In Vancouver Lower Mainland

Futureshops, Bestbuys, London Drugs, EB, etc.. have stock in for the 360s and a lot of PS3s. Hardly any Wiis around, and if you wanted one the best bet would be Toys R Us of all places. When the holiday buying comes around I predict zero stock of Wiis. If you want a Wii for Christmas, make sure you get it ASAP and not at the end of November. I ended up getting my Wii on Ebay, it was impossible any other way. But if you really want a PS3 this year you should be in luck no matter what. The 360s might run out because of Guitar Hero, Mass Effect and Halo.

» Western Washington

I'm also starting to see this take effect in Western Washington as well. This' mostly apparent in PS3 system's. Which before it was Luminous Arc that I was trying to find, but now can get one either this or next week.

» wiis

Precisely. I bought my wii for about $300.

by iamback(unregistered) - 2007-11-10 02:36
» price gouging

Price gouging is only legal on ebay.

by iamback(unregistered) - 2007-11-10 02:39
» speaking of which,

I always wondered why the resellers didn't just hide a few of their stock on launch day, and immediately release it on ebay...

I mean seriously, they KNOW that it'll sell at LEAST what they're asking for....

» woot

3 can play the shortage game.

but i doubt 360 has any problems pumping out new ones, their problem is fixing em coz most of em returns.

» Japan

They can use the ones they don't sell in Japan to trade with the ones that over heat in other places.

by lol(unregistered) - 2007-11-10 06:28
» If they don't sell then perhaps.....

The less people that have the system the less developers/Sony work on it also? You don't seem to have a PS3 after all.

» .

There's only going to be Wii shortages if Nintendo wants there to be. It sucks, is overpriced, and has only one good game that can't be played on cheaper systems.

The DVD player version isn't coming until next year.

Smash Brothers or Wii Fit isn't until next year.

That's assuming those are even valid reasons to get a Wii at all.

Good luck Nintendo!
