Sony going after younger set with budget PSP |
Listed in: News Tags: news, SCEE, Sony

Sony announced during Gamescom that another, more budget-oriented PSP revision will launch in the European market this fall. According to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan, they decided to launch the budget priced PSP in order to make it affordable to younger audiences.
"You will see the audience skew younger," he told MCV. "At € 99 / GB£ 89 it will make a great Christmas gift. It's a device to play UMD games. It's all for the audience. If we are going to take PSP very young – teens and much younger – they are happy to just play the game."
While most other revisions of the handheld added new features, the PSP E-1000 actually removes a few. First off, it doesn't have wi-fi. A recently released spec sheet also revealed that it won't have on-board stereo sound. It does have a UMD drive, though. Ryan, however, thinks that the loss of wi-fi is an acceptable tradeoff for a more affordable machine.
"If taking wi-fi out is the price to pay, we’re happy to," he stated. "The € 99 price tag is a real barrier that we’ve got under which will help us lift off."
You can find more info on the PSP E-1000 in this spec sheet.

Does it mean to say the headphone jack is mono too?
I think this is more aimed at stupid poor people who bite at anything that happens to be cheaper.

I pretty much never used Wifi, and Id probably consider picking one without. No stereo speakers would be a bigger issue to me, but the earphone jack will still be stereo.
Both Wifi and stereo speakers are probably very rarely used features, and losing both should simplify the casing since you dont need to allocate space for a antenna shielding and a speaker.
the mono speaker probably will be so thin and crappy you will want to use earphones or external speakers. should leave them out completely IMHO.

What was added?

If you want WiFi, get the WiFi model and not this one.

The space has already been allocated. The PSP 2 and 3000 have wifi and the 1000E is not that much different in size to either of them. The omission was strictly for build cost.

Another PSP model, which is an additional option for buyers. its not replacing the old PSP model, and you can still choose if Wifi is worth the price difference. How is giving buyers options a bad thing.

Cant tell, I havent seen a 1000E in comparison, but my point (which was aimed at d19xx) was that apart from saving the Wifi component itself you can save cost on the casing aswell as it gets simpler.

You admit to not seeing it, but try to insist there is some change in something.
PS: There's a picture of it on the article.
PPS: I really wish people would start password protecting their computers so their cats and children don't accidentally use them.

That's what the 3DS did.

Sony loves taking away features

Get the model you like if you're going to buy one. Nothing being removed.

Nothing is being removed from current models and current models themselves aren't being taken out.
Want WiFi and two speakers? Get that one. You won't have lost any 'features' that way.
Want a version that's cheaper for your little brother that wouldn't notice two speakers or WiFi anyways? Get this one and save money.
That's how having multiple options work. Looking at the big picture, nothing was removed, only added.

Actually, you are wrong. I looked at my PSP 2000 the other day and I discovered the WiFi had been removed. I am very upset since that it what I use for my CWCHEAT button.

However I do understand Sony for giving this a try since there are a number of Chinese knockoffs that play PS1 ISO's and cost between 60 and 100 USD. Not to mention that they lag and don't support linking with other consoles either. In that case I would prefer this PSP
But if I was Sony then I would adapt there XMB and to look more childlike and add some stupid little apps like something to edit pics with or something to make sound with. That would make it even more attractive for kids and I doubt it would ask much developing cost.
