Sony gives response to NPD Group's January numbers - Image 1

As you are all aware by now, global retail information provider NPD Group has already released its data concerning the video game industry. One of the highlights of its tally is Sony PlayStation 3 finally taking over the competition last month.

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton responded to the numbers and seemed happy and satisfied with the results. His statements echo NPD's numbers and directly compared it with Nintendo's and Microsoft's showing last month:
  • The PlayStation brand was #1 in both hardware and software in January.
  • The PlayStation brand sold more hardware units than Nintendo and Microsoft combined (764K versus 530K and 230K, respectively).
  • PlayStation total hardware revenue was $196 million in January; surpassing the total hardware revenue of Microsoft and Nintendo combined.
  • PlayStation total software revenue in January was $224 million, 38% higher than Microsoft.
Tretton also believes that this year is going to be big for the PlayStation brand with the PlayStation 3 and its Blu-ray capability leading the pack. Finally, he provided the specific numbers for both the PlayStation Portable, PS3, and PlayStation Network:
  • PlayStation Network total downloads exceeded 7.9 million in January 2008, well above the 6.6 million in December 2007. Currently in North America there are more than 2.9 million registered PlayStation Network accounts and more than 52 M total downloads life-to-date from PlayStation Store.
  • The best is yet to come: The influx of exceptional exclusive and third-party games like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Grand Theft Auto IV, not to mention later releases such as LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, SingStar, to name a few, combined with current momentum for Blu-ray, are expected to further enthusiasm for PS3.
  • PSP (PlayStation Portable) continued its sales ascent in January 2008 with 230K PSP hardware units sold in January; representing an increase of 9% over January 2007. Also, with its new partnership with Skype and great upcoming new games, such as God of War: Chains of Olympus, Patapon, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, further sales growth is expected in 2008.

Just about all the titles mentioned above, I am purchasing this year. I am excited and wondering what is next for this killer machine! Come on Final Fantasy XIII! I also hope they make another Zone Of The Enders. Give me Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter and Bionic Commando, oh my!

These figures are US alone and we know PS3 is more popular worldwide. Hell PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide in 2007 and it's already looking strong this year despite none of its biggest exclusives even out yet. 360 has the pinnacle of its market, it's had its run. Now it's PS3's time to shine.

"Hell PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide in 2007" uhh false? Where the crap do you get your facts from. You fanboys are so funny I swear. You act like if the ps3 wins you will stop getting swirlies from the kid down the street. Non of you have any stock in sony other than the little amount that you paid for your ps3 so what really drives a fanboy?

# Let's talk about stocklavino 2008-02-15 05:56
A company did a nice last quarter or 2 has nothing to help your next couple quarters. Let's take a look at Nvidia yesterday shall we? They reported a pretty darn good 4th quarter and their stock got slammed. Why? When the market is gloomy the better you did in the past quarter the worse it makes you look like in the future unless for some reason you can be 200% you can outsell yourself in every quarter. If ppl have a bit of doubt... take a look at Apple. Is this sales figure a really bad thing for SONY? No, not really but mind you it won't help much. Game division is just a fraction of SONY's crumbled empire. If you wanna look at the full picture take a step back and let's see how their other division are doing over the year. Bottom line, if the econmy goes bad I seriously doubt kids parents will spend $$$ on game console. I know I won't and I worry more on my mortgage and jobs.

Just to tell you when he said "Hell PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide in 2007" its not uhh false. Everywhere besides the US (and US last month) the PS3 outsold the 360, so stop calling him a fanboy for telling the truth and you misreading what he said.

But all around not being fanboyish the PS3 this year has some crazy exclusives plus great multiplatformer s, this IS ps3's year.

Are you stupid, or just blind. You want facts that Sony did in fact beat the 360 sales all of 07, and in its first year then they did well here it is, and this is all true.

Quote:
In Jan 07, Microsoft said they sold 10.4m XBOX360 Consoles (skip to the 6:30 mark)

In Jan 08, Microsoft said they sold 17.7m XBOX360 Consoles (Confirmed by Major Nelson)

This gives a year on year sales figure for XBOX360 of 7.3m Consoles sold in 2007.

Now lets take a look at Sony.

Those are really interesting figures. Whilst we don't look at Wii, as we're sure they've outsold both by miles, looking at the two, could EA's predictions be coming into fruitition?

Source is right here about EA's prediction:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid+32686

The end of 2006 was the end of the 5th quarter in which Microsoft did business, and they sold 10.4m consoles as shown above. So if we take a look at Sony's position 5 quarters later 10.49m consoles sold. It really is neck on neck, with PS3 having sold around 0.04m more consoles (minimum) than their counter parts.... Seems to be good news for Sony...

This was taken from this site, although slightly modified to show the important stuff.

Guess that makes us not a fanboys.

Also again changed the + to an equal sign since QJ hasn't fixed that issue yet.
