Sony's Stats - Image 1 Sony's Stats - Image 2

PSP Fanboy reports that Sony has revealed its latest metrics for PlayStation Portable Hardware and Software sales world wide. There's an interesting revelation to be had here: when it comes to "Portable Hardware Dollars Market Share" the PSP actually beats the Nintendo DS by a small percentage.

Now, you may say that that doesn't make sense since there are so many Nintendo DS lites out there. However if you factor in the retail price of the NDS, it does make some sense. Check out the charts above if you want to see if the math adds up.

There are several amusing things that can be gathered from the charts. One thing is that the US and Europe apparently love their PSP, with large shares of PSP sales. On the software side, of things, Japan gets the most love, with 641 titles, this despite their significantly lower software shipments.

Now some folks may have their problems with Sony including the NDS in their charts as Sony has engaged in a "we're not out to beat the DS" strategy with the PSP, however, you have to realize that if you have to release figures for "Portable Hardware Dollars Market Share" the inclusion of the DS in unavoidable.

If anything, this only adds to the sentiment that the PSP doesn't really have to beat the DS in order to thrive, especially since they have their own hefty share of the market.

» ???

Why would games not be released in the US and Europe if the larger share of the hardware reside in those places???

Since developers want to make more money, I find it strange that they don't deliver the games to the places that have more psp's being bought.

» Oh wow.

I love how sony spins that to make it look like they win, too bad their handheld loses them money, while Nintendo makes theirs money.

I love the PSP and all, and love the DS, but I hate it when companys spin information like this just so they can have a 0.1% lead.

» ha more PSP titles japan?

Japan is an odd country. They've got games for EVERYTHING! From dating sims to tire changing sims to intestine crawling adventures to sushi racing. There are a TON of useless crap games that the JJapanese seem to dig where as if they were released in EU or NA would get an eye bat and stay on the shelf.

I love it how many believe the whole "console losing money bit" beyond the obvious fact that they make it back in software sales is the fact that they make it back even more in publishing and over-priced accesories. Even further if you look at how much they're getting in discounts and rebates for long-term component contracts (which usually gets clocked on the income of the mother-company not the gaming division) and they're losing very little. there is an exception to this and it's the MS's xbox branch (even that's speculation).
