Sony Ericsson Satio - Image 1

Remember the Sony Ericsson Aino? The phone that could sync up with the PS3 and let users manage their PS3-stored media? Yeah, another Sony Ericsson phone just did it one better by being able to play PlayStation games.

The new phone, the Sony Ericsson Satio, was unveiled during a media launch held at the Red Dot Museum in Singapore last week. The phone was actually first introduced as the "Idou" in Barcelona. here's a quote from Hirokazu Ishizuka, Sony EricssonÂ’s Corporate Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific Region:

I think we are very confident of our own solution--entertainment unlimited. Not only music entertainment experience but also imaging, cyber-shot technology and we have a 12.1 megapixels camera. On top of that, you can enjoy your PlayStation games so therefore this product is so powerful and we are very confident of this productÂ’s success.

It was never explicitly stated what kind of "games" these are, but I think we can rule out any PS3 games right now. The only games mentioned were Asphalt Road and an unspecified Prince of Persia game, both of which will be in ninth High Definition (nHD) format. Maybe it'll also get some of the smaller downloadable games being readied for the PSP Go?

If you're thinking about saving up for this, there's a bit of a catch. The Satio's content library -- which will include downloadable games, movies, music videos and applications -- is reportedly exclusive for Asia Pacific consumers only. The Satio's also on the worldwide SE website too, though, so chances are those'll still be released worldwide.

The Satio is expected to be released this fall. Here's a video of it:

» nHD?

WTF kind of marketing ploy is "ninth High Definition". They should just call it what it is: 640x360

Anyways, it looks like they're just using the "Playstation" trademark. I doubt it will be anything like PS1, PS2, PS3, or PSP games.

» you're probably right,

even we psp owners experience difficulties with 2 less buttons and 1 less analog, how can you expect to play PS games without buttons and analogs :/

Well, the video shows that it uses the touchscreen for controls...so i'm thinking games would have to be customized for it.

» Touch screen... Bah!

Sony's trying to say the Iphone's not a true gaming device because it has no keys, now they trying to pawn this thing off on us, Sony just couldn't care less about the Playstation brand anymore, i mean this will probably have a stupidly high price like everything else they trying to sell now,

» Ninth HD

Oh yeah? Well my HD goes to eleven!!

notHD is lower resolution than my PC from 1993. Not that it matters, if Sony can make it as fun as that PC was then... ;)

Who the fack want's to play PS1 games. There are many homebrew emulators already. Just because SE has some proprietary OS on their non-PDA phones and don't allow you to code your own stuff they think they've made something great with this.

» Thing is...

Sony actually has very little part in what Ericcson does.....

That's why it's Sony Ericsson and not just Sony....they just have some Swedish company making their phones for them.

» Atleast they kept the 4.3 screen

Unlike the PSP GO! Which has a lame smaller screen, yes half an inch but still it takes away from the best part.

Atleast this phone still has the 4.3 screen unlike PSP GO!

If PSP Go! had 4.3 screen, I would still wait for one of these because my grandma says to me, PSP GO! it looks like a cell phone, is it a cell phone? NOOOOOOOOO! THEN WHY BUY A DEVICE WITH A SMALLER SCREEN!

I told her, she still hates it and wants a PSP phone with 4.3 screen and this phone actually delivers the screen.

All they need now is add in the buttons and such like how they turned the Mylo 2 into the PSP GO!

This seriously will end up being the PSP phone, lets hope PSP GO! fails, so this comes out as the replacement guys.

Seriously I bet one last ditch effort, if PSP GO fails big time, they will release a PSP Phone.

PSP Phone atleast kept the screen size same. All they did with Mylo 2 is change the keypad to PSP buttons and make the screen smaller.

They will do the same thing with this, if that fails.

my phone is light years away from this phone. Lol. Sony Ericsson W200i. Does playing Pokemon on your phone count as "High-Tech?" *sarcasm*

i can see its got amazing frames per second :L

The screen on the psp-go may be a half inch smaller, but it has the same amount of pixels as the old screens.

This means a higher pixel density and a clearer picture. I prefer picture quality over size, ntm it's still bigger than the iphone/touch screen.

» Also

SONY + Sony Computer Entertainment are not the same company.

by mr.x256 - 2009-06-23 23:53
» -

That may be a result of YouTubes FPS limitations.

by mr.x256 - 2009-06-23 23:57

A lot of people want to play PS1 games. After all the PS1 sold over 100 Million units.

by somemadcaaant - 2009-06-26 21:48
» lol - I smell a fail...

nah that clearly has a *****e frame rate on screen with the device wabbling about at full frame rate.

If flash games like that run crap and their cheaper to obtain then the psp type game downloads, then who is going to even look at this thing to play PSP type games - no1. First impressions. The SE handsets have always had *****e OS's to boot, couldn't wait to swap that old K750.

Normal games are *****e on my iphone, touch screen crap, stick to my PSP for a proper experience. I doubt VERY much it will even get PSP "equivalent" games as previously stated above.

20c worth.
