Sony denies Sony Ericsson the use of the PlayStation brand

PlayStation - Image 1Rumors have been going around for a long time about a Sony Ericsson gaming phone. The truth behind those is that Sony Ericsson went to the higher ups of the Sony chain of command and pitched a PSP Phone to the board late last year, to capitalize on gaming success as well as the success of the Cybert-shot and Walkman handsets. Heck they even have Bravia Phones in Japan.

Sources say the Sony told Sony Ericsson that they will only license the PlayStation brand if and only if when Sony makes the handsets independently, meaning that the ties with Ericsson must first be severed.

According to a Sony Ericsson spokeswoman, the handset manufacturer "could not comment on what Sony has or hasn't said." "In the past, we have been keen that our product proposition lives up to brand promise, and we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone," she added.

The spokeswoman also mentioned that Sony Ericsson is continually reviewing launch plans, and will look at Bravia and PlayStation in the future.

Bravia PSPs? Bravia PSP Phones? Wherever their ventures take direction, they all sound like amazing pieces of hardware.

» They'd better...

...start working on any kind of PSP phone/ new PSP, otherwise I think the iPhone will kick their butts. It's what the people want at the moment.

(PS Don't get me wrong, I like my PSP, but mobile phone and mobile internet capabilities, and more iPhone-like games/apps would be awesome)

The iPhone couldn't kick anything's 'butt'. I own one they suck balls.

You want iPhone-like games and apps? Why? Have you ever played any iPhone games? They're boring as *****. Just stick to the NDS and PSP, and if ya want a phone, go buy a prepaid phone for under $20.

"we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone"

Exactly. The last thing I want is some *****ty excuse for a games machine. If they ever make a PSP phone, the bloody thing better be more powerful than the current PSP. Not some run some bullcrap like the iPhone's so called 'games'.

» We already had a Phone/Gaming Device

It was called the N-gage. And you know what? It was a piece of crap. Just because two things are good doesn't mean they should go together. Gaming Device+Phone so far has +FAIL. Lets just work on a PSP2 with better internet capabilities, built in HD, and a Nice DLC store, rather than some piece of crap with a phone built in.

True, but iphone would still sell way better, just look at the wii, most consumers don't research, they just buy what's "cool"

» Xperia rocks

I've had one for about a month now. Excellent device. There are quibbles, but those are related to Windows Mobile, in general (ie: any phone that uses WM). The Panel concept is really the bomb; don't let reviewers, etc. convince you otherwise. It's like having the ability to change the phone you are using at-will. And, people have already hacked the HTC Touch Flo interface, so it's like having the 'best of both worlds': the sleek beauty of the TF3D software, while running it on the stellar hardware, camera, and keyboard from Sony. The camera snaps or does video in 3.2mp WIDESCREEN, by the way.
