Sony comments on PSP 2 speculation: no comment

Sony dodges PSP2 speculation - Image 1The rumor that Sony licensed a processor for the PSP's successor got a lot of people buzzing.

Not Sony though, nuh-uh. Sony's tight-lipped as ever, and predictably refuses to comment on "rumour and speculation."

Probably too busy on making that new PSP? Kidding. Or am I? Hmmm....

In case you missed the news, the rumor slipped out of the mill yesterday, when word got out that the Imagination Technologies Group has signed a license agreement with a new partner. Sources said the new partner was Sony, who licensed a new processor for the PSP 2, the successor of the current gen.

Probably part of why the rumor got so popular is because the iPhone also runs on Imagination's tech. The iPhone's been making waves in the gaming industry lately, trying to get a piece of the gaming pie. Naturally people would perk up their ears if Sony's trying to get a piece of the Apple pie. (You've just been PUNd.)

» In the case there's a PSP2

I hope they use high capacity UMDs so there's double the memory, that way they'll have more room to do whatever they want with, as well as the original PSP titles being backwards compatible.

Well, it'll probably never be hacked for years. The ONLY reason I have a PSP is because of CFW and all you can do with it.

They won't screw up again. The security will be implemented properly this time around.

And they better make the graphics REALLY good. At least 50% better than the PS2, with LOTS of RAM.

They could try double sided UMD's

Or maybe 3 generations of the PSP is enough for sony.

» hmmm

Sony replied quite fast - or were they asked about it? But even then, the reply would have been quick. And usually it takes a little longer, doesn't it? Well, i almost believe this to be true...but with the PSP 3000 just released, we won't see this new PSP too soon.

» Let's not forget

Make the storage medium quality. Not some cheap flimsy plastic casing that breaks like our current UMD.

That forces us to use ISOs.

» u gotta problem with UMDs

then go make your own format instead of crying bout it....... i've never had one break on me before.....they are dependable and super scratch resistence.......small easy to carry.....u think of a better idea smart guy.

This wins the no news, news award for the day. Like sony would say anything, especially so soon after PSP3000. Probably see this next holiday season. Would like to see them go digital distribution, but they would do something stupid to F that up. Maybe a combination of digital and UMD, decompress the media files into what is essentially a saved game slot and run the app off the UMD (loading media from memory). Where was that article that sated how us gamers could do better than most designers at their own job?

It...isn't his job....to make....good...formats....for.........the..Sony.....PSP.....

Things can't just be made perfect, it's just trial and error.

That....and....don't.....use periods....after....every other.....word.....Morse....Code....went obsolete.....many....years....ago.

Hey, new technology is a good thing. As for 'nay sayers' poo-ing the hackability of the medium, just give it time.

Once the warranty has expired folks will be looking forward to opening up a PSP2 like the door of an unlocked Corvette.

The only negative inclination I can offer would be the demise of any older peripherals that Sony will opt for new. I.e., adapting micro sd cards as apposed to the MS pro duo or flat out another memory format all together.

Otherwise, with the way greed has played into the markets, I don't see a huge rush to baste a new medium with undiluted cash flow for research and development.

They'll nickle and dime us to death and change the format of some file extensions, but other than that they'll add some bells and whistles that weren't there before.

» No Surprise here..

This is no surprise to me, due to the fact that they indeed say long ways back that they plan to have the psp for a life span of 10 years more, im sure a new psp is in the makes.
