Sony closes Music/Video Services to focus on servicing the Playstation community - Image 1Let it not be said that Sony doesn't care about its PlayStation community. The company has announced that it will be stopping its music and video services to focus on serving the PlayStation group and their technical needs.

In the Sony offices in Los Angeles, employees were given word that about 20-plus jobs will be phased out as the current project winds down and closes. The eBooks division of the project will still be up and running since it will be providing services to the Sony Reader product.

The head of the Sony Connect division Steve Banfield will be leaving in the next few weeks while two members from Sony corporate, namely Tim Schaaff and Fumi Kanagwa will be running the remaining members of the Connect engineering team. The 80 other employees will be assigned to PlayStation support.

A couple of factors have yet been disclosed by Sony. First up, is whether the Sony Connect brand name will still be maintained by the company after this change. The second question is what happens to the SonicStage software? Will it just be junked and relegated to just disappear, or will Sony continue to support it?

It is unfortunate that Sony had to do this, but still, it looks to be a very good marketing move by Sony as the PlayStation community is by far one of the loyalest groups of Sony customers. Be sure to keep checking back here for more updates on the gaming industry.

sony really should keep going with the connect store and maybe even intergrate it to the psn somehow, if they do that they will opne the door to consumers to a world of media easily accesable form there ps3s...the console is supposed to be being marketed as a media hub i hope those fools realease the potential of the connect brand, woul dbe a real shame to lose it

If Sony plays their cards right, the PSN could blow up for them (in a good way) evolving into something they can use for their entire lineup of products. A central hub for you to get all of your media not only for your Playstion products (PS3/PSP) but also your Ericson phones, your walkman mp3 players and what ever else Sony decideds to integrate.

This is what they are getting at. I doubt they will stop these services all together - but on their own, they were floundering. Having an all-in-one service will be the best route, which they will likely bring into the PSN.

since the playstation community is by far sony's ace. I think this is a very smart move by sony.

» mohaas05 you don't get the point

The point is more employees fired all because of sony not realizing the have zero chance on making their PS3 succesful, Sony has begun badly and sales are horrible and if the don't back out of the videogame market and continue to do what they do best (cameras, televisions, media centers and cellphones) they are gonna suffer tremendous losses.

Good job sony. Thanks for potentially relegating my sony MP3 player to obscurity.

You already lost me as a home electronics customer, a console customer and now a portable customer. Only a matter of time before sony pushes me off my psp.

this has nothing to do with ps3. Sony connect only delivers to psp and music players. I think Sony is actually shifting most of these services over to the Playstation Network.

by whoelse - 2007-06-18 05:12
» maybe

Maybe the Sony Connect name will be used for music purchased in the PSN. I think this is a good move. Connect isnt exactly that successful and not many people use sonicstage except walkman owners e.g. may dad.

Good move by Sony. I don't use Sony Connect anyway, but I'd prefer them improving the PSN service as much as possible. They invested a lot of money on the PS3, so they should be looking to exploit any services that can help return some of that expenditure. If I can download/stream music, videos and games everything from the PSN to PSP, Walkman phone, Sony cameras, etc, then I have more reason to own a PS3.

They just need to make sure the system is easy to use for regular consumers, and stays updated with compelling content.

Are you stupid? Sony are closing/relegating their "Connect" service, not the music division, i.e. their record studios, Sony BMG and all that jazz.

by xan - 2007-06-18 06:33
» Sony Just doesnt get it.

Sony's Fate is that of Sega here pretty soon, and if they don't play there cards right like Sega to stick around (e.g. Make and publish solely videogames), We will see another Atari fiasco. Sony actually thinks the PS3 is going to prevail, I give it a 9/10 chance it dies before 2009's beginning.

peace

» Re:xan

Sonys fate is nothing close to segas. Sega ONLY made video games. Sony makes video games and TVs and other 5hit. And you act like if 360 or sony dosnt win the Top that there never coming back.

My PS3 is perfect, and with all these games im looking foward to I know it wont die. But yeah only a fanboy like you would see it that way because your onesided.

by Eclipze_ - 2007-06-18 07:09
» This isnt the format war

Its not as easy for a system to die than a format is. Every fanboy needs to go play there loved system and stop worrying about other peoples system.
