Sony bringing new tech to PS3, PSP via upcoming SDK updates

Sony just keeps on pumping out some interesting technology for the PS3 console. 3D's already been dated for next year, and there's another piece of tech that allows for ridiculously high-resolution imaging not just on PS3 but on its handheld sibling as well.

The tech, which is apparently already being used on a Japanese release calendar program available on the Japanese PlayStation Store, can seamlessly enlarge or reduce image data, and even allows developers to add a variety of content, including movies, into the images. What impresses me most is that it's also possible on the PSP.

An upcoming SDK update will give developers access to the tech, although Sony hasn't given out a specific date yet. Check out the vid below for a demo.

Another piece of Sony tech that is being readied for developer use is the voice recognition system being used in SingStar. In the game, the tech allows users to navigate their song library by calling out voice commands.

The voice recognition technology is still Sony exclusive, but just like the high-res imaging tech, it will be made available for other developers via an upcoming SDK update. Again, check out the vid below for a demo.

» Nice

I didn't know Singstar did this because sony never advertises their products well. If they did good advertising like the Wii does the PS3 would be selling much more.

simple updates like this wont get ps3 back up.... ps3 needs heavier updates... i want music playback during gameplay, and more support for trophies on older games... oh and cross game voice chat

Sony knows that music playback along with cross game voice chat are among the things us comsumers want the most as we have been begging for it for a many moons.

As for trophy support in older games that is completely up to developers to implement. Sony can't force game devs to put trophies in every game they have stopped working on and i wouldn't expect them too either. The best they could do is make it mandatory for all future games to have trophy support.

No thanks to cross game voice chat (voice chat's easily my most hated feature of the current gen consoles), and as for music playback during games, most of the games that would remotely benefit from that already do it anyways (usually racing games). If you want more music put on your stereo.
