Sony blocking CFW 5.50 GEN-B users from accessing the PlayStation Store?

Sony is at it again. In a not-so-surprising move to further combat piracy on the PSP, Sony has blocked CFW 5.50 GEN-B users from accessing the PlayStation Store.

Is this just some sort of system maintenance from Sony or another stealthy move to get rid of custom firmware users?

Thanks Jsanity663 for the tip!

fail.

Anyways, i'm the only one here that does not use PSN on PSP, just on PS3?

by Donish1786 - 2009-10-13 18:25
» good...

you shouldn't hack on online games anyway.

by slowman - 2009-10-13 18:33
» WTF...

They're not "blocking" CFW. If they wanted to they'd have done that weeks and weeks ago. People on CFW still buy stuff from PSN.

Don't forget that 5.00OFW, 5.50OFW, and 5.55OFW users still have to update too.

This isn't some targeted effort to screw the CFW people. As much as you folks and I myself would like to imagine some shadowy figure sitting at a desk and laughing maniacally about this, it isn't the case.

They just updated PSN, same as before.

by Dartan - 2009-10-13 18:57
» A fix?

Didn't Dark Alex have a "fix" or work-around for the PSN ... or does that:

1. Not work any more ?

2. Not work on GEN ?

» CFW

users either don't buy anything or barely buy anything at all or buy a bunch but with CFW you get the same thing if you buy it or not. Dumb move by Sony to block out potential customers which by blocking won't affect them in any other way but giving them the only option to get a game which is to pirate it.

by Mirmo - 2009-10-13 19:48
» -.-

Not everyone who uses custom firmware hacks. I've had custom firmware for a while yet I've never hacked online.

by Silver_Infinity - 2009-10-13 19:50
» Got a question about above

Was it PSN's policy to not let anyone in PSN if they weren't fully updated, like if the current version was 6.00, did 5.50 OFW users have to update to 6.00 OFW to access? I've never used PSN before, so I need to ask.

Because it would indeed be a move to block CFW if access always required the latest. But if it didn't, then it's not a move to screw CFW, since 5.50 GEN-B had access well into 6.00/6.10's existence.

» ...

They are really only blocking online play.

If you really wanted to buy a game off the PSN say it be a PSP Mini you can still use Media Go and download/purchase your game. There's not really an excuse to pirate games other than the UMD asking for a firmware higher that 5.55

by Techni - 2009-10-13 20:01
» That makes perfect sense

Block the people with hacked systems from actually buying games. That way you force them to pirate.

by JSanity663 - 2009-10-13 20:03
» hmm

Sony knows the psp hacking scene, and they know there hasnt been a CFW in a while, so block everything below 6.00 because OFW users wouldnt have a problem updating only CFW users.. easy way to block us from PSN... nice move sony... nice move

by DarkXCloud - 2009-10-13 20:07
» Sigh...

And I was really looking forward to your games, sony. Not a smart move.

by Retrohelix - 2009-10-13 20:55
» .

yup no more motorstorm..

"A system software update for the PSP system is required.

For update methods refer to the instructions for the PSP system."

damn.

oh well theres always fifa 10 for online play.

by LibriumAnimus - 2009-10-13 21:02
» Sigh

I need to get this off my chest. I really, really wish someone would release a 6.00 based cfw. Where are you GENyUS? If my french was better I would write you a letter.

by Acteon - 2009-10-13 23:39
» Nice, Sony...

You have to laugh really. On one hand you have PSN, the UK version of which has about 20 PSP games on it. On the other you have CFW, which lets you play a back catalogue of hundreds. So really, who cares?

The PS3 can still get online, so unless you need to activate the title from the PSP, it's not much of a block for those who own both.

I have to say that by shutting out CFW you only encourage piracy. Block online play by all means, but taking away the ability for potential customers to pay developers for their product is just daft.

Yeah I legally bought Motorstorm on UMD but since I refuse to update to the official firmware (which in my opinion would semi-cripple my PSP) I had to go download an iso of it. Seems every game eventually gets patched to work with the 5.00 M33-5 firmware I have. No I can't play Motorstorm online but then I have my PS3 for that whereas my PSP is for gaming on the go and I'm often in areas without wi fi so it's not like I can use the online multiplayer feature anyway.

by illahstrait - 2009-10-14 00:47
» smart move

You guys do realize all sony wants is for CFW users to do is update to OFW, that or to buy a PSP GO? Yeah like that's going to happen.

by illahstrait - 2009-10-14 00:54
» Me too

I bought Timberlands Beaterator Legally from gamestop in the mall even had it reserved before hand so when I got home and poped it in my 3.80m33 psp and seen the text about needing to update to OFW 5.50 I seen it as a slap to the face. All I wanted to do was make beats, not delete mike tyson's punchout, turtle s in time (the remake sux)and Sonic 2 among others.

by SonicTH - 2009-10-14 02:57
» I could have accessed it before?

I didn't even know that. I thought I had to update from 5.50 to use it...

by symbal - 2009-10-14 03:19
» Ha Ha Ha

I always expect this level of stupidity from Sony, they throwing away the chance of more people spending money in Psn store and just promoting piracy, i'm sure the developers selling games must be so happy they chose Psp.

by iamshadow - 2009-10-14 04:40
» Whatever

This isn't going to impact me whatsoever. I don't have any games that require PSN to login with, other than Resistance, and I'm bored with that game anyways.

Just use MediaGO and the "Use Version.txt" option in recovery to get on PSN.

by 73N5H1 - 2009-10-14 05:06
» ...

I love how people never fail to stop *****ing about something they're getting for free.... If you're so damned unhappy, then code a 6.00 based cfw yourself.

by 73N5H1 - 2009-10-14 05:09
» ...

I thought so too... changing the version.txt file...

I never use PSN, so I have no clue if that still works or not, might be worth a try though.

by askdefguy - 2009-10-14 05:44

...maybe they want us to update to 6.0?

» Someone

Always finds a workaround for Sony's fw restrictions like Decrypter and version.txt, you gotta remember that as fast as new Cfw is released Sony will find some way to block it, so i think plugins and patches for existing Cfw's are the best option.

by arnookie - 2009-10-14 09:20
» will use version.txt work to get around this.

will use version.txt work to get around this?

What version.txt file will work?

» What does this line say

Sony is at it again. In a not-so-surprising move to further combat piracy on the PSP, Sony has blocked CFW 5.50 GEN-B users from accessing the PlayStation Store.

and what about those touted PSP Minis. Sure Sony doesn't make as much from Minis than actual games but its still money...

by Isourou-san - 2009-10-14 10:33
» Awesome piece of technology.

In all the time that the PSP Playstation Store has been around, I've never used it even once.

by RSX46 - 2009-10-14 11:16
» Sucks!

Sucks Huh! Looks like sony is getting the upper hand in keeping the homebrew scene locked down!

No new M33 and now this...

***** SONY!

» Version.txt

Does not work.

by SuperSZ - 2009-10-14 11:40
» uh?

Is Sony stupid or what? If people, even with CFW enters to the PSN it means they wanna buy something. If they block them, then the user, pissed off, is gonna download by free (piracy) what he would have bought in the first place.

Anyways, I give a f*ck, there is no PSN in my country.

by jwseymo - 2009-10-14 12:41
» hmmm

It does not said they was blocking this cfw on the vid, but they want people to upgrade to 6.10

» @ 73N5H1

hey genius not every one know how to code.

YOU FAIL!!!!!!

by chessboxer - 2009-10-14 14:40
» It depends

on the firmware. Some are mandatory, some are not. It's down to Sony to determine which is and which isn't.

It's the same with the PS3 firmware too. The most recent firmware (v3.01) isn't mandatory whereas the latest PSP firmware is.

by iamshadow - 2009-10-14 14:57
» Yes it does

With MediaGO...idk why...but it does...I have used it to download rockband unplugged songs

by valefour - 2009-10-14 15:33
» like what's gonna happen?

i bought a pspGo. i like it. it's way smaller in size and doesn't weigh anything, feels great in my pocket. 16gb hd, that's good enough for quite a few songs, videos, and games for me. yeah it feels different, but i got used to it already, doesn't feel weird at all anymore. not saying i'm gonna ditch my M33'd slim, but it does feel more portable and overall better than its predecessor to me. pause the current gameplay to listen to music then go back to the exact same spot without having to load a game save? love it. yeah, m33 has something similar but this version is stable.

by symbyosis - 2009-10-14 18:10
» how does this prevent piracy?

if you have to pay for PS-Store stuff? lol?

by Nineball - 2009-10-14 18:20
» Does this for online games too.

Just tried to play the online arena mode for Thexder Neo and got the same message.

by erefa - 2009-10-15 08:08
» Why not writing a FileMon?

A .pbp that analizes which files are 'touched' when initializing the PSN store?

by erefa - 2009-10-15 08:11
» ... for dnas analysis

This check seems to be from DNAS. Sony built that system dynamically I guess, so they could check what file they ever want to ... maybe just for a checksum

» version text doesn't work
