Sony and Sky plans to bring TV shows to PSP

D'oh! - Image 1Sony's latest PSP firmware 3.11 was decrypted yesterday, and a new downgrader can almost be seen over the horizon. Things are looking very bright indeed for the homebrew scene these days, and most people may be thinking that Sony has nothing more up its sleeves. Well, it seems that Sony took a few steps away from that direction, and is now engaged with trying to lure fans back.

New Media Age reports that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) is currently having discussions with the UK television station Sky, regarding a future venture which will allow PSP users to download television shows.

As a brief note for our non-European readers, Sky broadcasts high-caliber programs in the UK and in Ireland. Among the shows that they air, Lost, 24, The Simpsons, Pokemon, Deadwood and Stargate SG-1, are just a few. These programs are quite popular, as you all know, and this strategy is expected to draw a lot of money people if it proves to be successful.

Details are a bit scarce as of now, but we will be sure to update you as soon as we get new information. The said service is believed to go live later this year.

Great, I hope I can watch them from Wi-Fi.

I would love to watch 24 while laying in my bed or something :)

And I hope audio quality is good...

I'd be in on this for sure as well...

I have to ask QJ though - what on earth is up with the scratching things out of the post? "Will draw a lot of [money] people"??? Maybe I don't get the joke, but it just looks kind of weird.

Is that an editor's mark or is that being done for "comedic" effect?

I've been watching shows on psp since I first bought this wonderful homebrew machine. Just download a show via the wonders of the internet and convert it with the 3gp converter. Easy as making a poptart.

The scratching out tends to be used as a journalistic "slip of the tongue" effect, the real reason being crossed out and the "official" line written in.

I say that if Sony would just have a monthly subscription service (ala Netflix & TiVo or iTunes, etc) where ppl can download TV shows on demand, they'll finally be drawing new customers to the PSP and will start tapping a new market. Even though I can download most of this stuff as a torrent, I would probably still subscribe to the service just to support the PSP and keep Sony interested in developing it. Remember, if Sony can't make money on their gaming consoles, they'll end up abandoning the gaming sector all together. The PSP and PS3 are in the top of their class - it would be a shame to see Sony stop with them.

we already have this service in belgium... for over a year now. We can watch the news by installing a program called pspsync to our computer... wich everyday checks and downloads the latest episode, ready to be copied to your psp.

# whats the big deal?Guest 2007-02-10 06:39
no offence but i can download episodes and watch them on ma psp..i dont see how this will bring more ppl out of homebrew..we all said that it'd be great using flash on psp but that kinda sucked..we all assumed location free would be kool only to realize u need to pay abt 300+ to buy that stupid box, heck i assumed psp internet would be great only to realize that 1) its damn slow 2) too hard to type 3) wat else can we do besides reading? This is another pointless attempt by Sony and will fail miserably.Although PS1 games are a good idea, the price of the game + the download limit is retarded! HOMEBREW WILL OWN PERIOD! Sony, u cant beat hackers, Make some good games already!
