While Solid Snake is taking over Japan with epic numbers in tow, the UK is likewise celebrating Konami's latest stealth title. In fact, Metal Gear Solid 4 has actually debuted straight to the top of the UK software charts for the period of June 9 to June 15.

With MGS4 dominating the pack, Lego Indiana Jones is chased by a rolling boulder down to the second spot. In turn, Niko Bellic slips down another rank with GTA4 holding third place.

For a PS3-exclusive to snuff out the multiplatform success of Lego Indy... That's really saying something. What's more is that MGS4's success only counts for three days of the total week of the chart's timespan. MGS4 was released on the 12th - a Thursday - remember? Imagine that, eh?

In terms of PS3 launch week sales, Guns of the Patriots now sits comfortably between Grand Theft Auto 4 and Gran Trusimo 5: Prologue as the UK's second-fastest PS3 title. And if it's a matter of comparing MGS4 to the rest of the Metal Gear saga's UK launch weeks, the latest iteration in the franchise is stuck squarely between MGS2 (with MGS4 down by 24,000 units) and MGS3 (with MGS4 ahead by 14,000 units).

Meanwhile, other mainstays are still around: Mario & Sonic still running up the track, Dr. Kawashima picking at everyone's brain cells, and PES 2008 still kicking to stay alive. Also debuting this week is Civilization Revolution from civ-sim guru Sid Meier.

Here are the top 20 games in the UK for week ending June 15, 2008:
  1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  2. Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
  3. Grand Theft Auto IV
  4. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
  5. Dr Kawashima's Brain Training
  6. Race Driver: GRiD
  7. Wii Play
  8. Sports Island
  9. Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution
  10. Wii Fit
  11. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
  12. FIFA 08
  13. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
  14. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  15. Ninja Gaiden II
  16. Mario Kart Wii
  17. Carnival: Funfair Games
  18. UEFA Euro 2008 Austria-Switzerland

» yeah but...

where are the actual numbers?

did MGS4 actually beat launch totals for anything in the recent past?

i'd like to see how this series matches up against one of the bigger 360 exclusives...

so yeah more info please.

» AFAIK

Unfortunately, Chart Track doesn't release actual numbers. We can only go by whatever results they publish. They usually have software sales by rank - no numbers. Though sometimes, they report percentages, especially in terms of how far up or down a game's moved in the charts.

Say, for example, Lego Indy this week experienced a 9% drop in total game sales compared to last week.

Now, on the subject of 360 exclusives... If memory serves, I think the most recent 360-exclusive that topped Chart Track UK was Halo 3. And before that, BioShock (which is now unfortunately not a 360-exclusive any more).

» Best ever...!

I hope that this game eclipses GTA4 in the near future, purely because it's obvious that MGS4 will be a timeless classic for a long time to come, same as previous titles in the MGS series.

Personally the MGS series have always been the best game franchise in my opinion. The narrative structure is perfect, character development is flawless and the heart warming scenes never cease to put a frog in my throat. Ok; so maybe they're a little too cheesy at points but I have never played a game that has brought me so close to the edge of my seat and wanting more and more after finishing the story. Hideo has truly outdone himself and he should be extremely proud of what he and the team at Konami and Kojima Productions have created. This game has set the benchmark for all gaming titles in the future and I doubt that any will come close unless for some strange reason he creates another amazing MGS title. Just incase he's reading this, please make another HIDEO!!!!
