Smart Brain Games - Keeping ADHD in check

Now before you go running off yelling at us because of another quasi off topic post you should realize that "it is estimated that between 3 and 5 percent of children have ADHD, or approximately 2 million children in the United States. This means that in a classroom of 25 to 30 children, it is likely that at least one will have ADHD." That being said researchers are working on using video games to help with the treatment of ADHD. Their hope is that playing video games will improve the lives of those with ADHD, which stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which can be seen in people who have cognitive processing abilities.

People with these disorders experience "constant frustration," says Henry Owens, a Melbourne, Fla., clinical psychologist who recently began offering a patented video game system, which evolved from NASA technology, to some of his patients. "If they just play video games on their own, they will zone out," he says. "When they play on this system, if they zone out, the video game doesn't respond any more," acting as an incentive to improve focus and concentration.

The key here is controlling brain wave activity, which can be too slow or too fast depending on what part of the brain when a patient has ADHD. While Dr. Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Schneider Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park, N.Y.states that the treatment process is still controversial, reporting that studies have yet to show video game play with a neuro-feedback component has either a short-term or long-term benefit, despite parents' desire to explore other options in the wake of recent concerns about Ritalin and other stimulants used to treat ADHD.

He also worries that parents may abandon traditional methods of treatment, which with pharmacological and educational intervention has been proved effective. The game station, developed by San Diego company, CyberLearning Technology has already been in contact with patients in real life situations. The system is currently available for consumers to purchase directly from SmartBrainGames. The system currently has an approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Typical cost of in-office neuro-feedback treatment programs usually cost from $4,000 to $5,000, while the cool price of a SmartBrainGames system runs about $580, with in-office network provider supervision running less then $2,000. The best part, the games on the list are from the PlayStation and Playstation 2 archive, so many games will be familiar to gamers who have this disability.

» good old videogames

it seems to me videogames are a force for good, not evil. if a parent is not careful and allows their child to get sucked into the reality shown by a violent videogame or whatever and the kid does go crazy then it's the parent's fault; not the developers. and then vid games can increase your oppurtunities to interact with all sorts of people, who share a similar interest to you... if this can do something for people with adhd then its fantastic! i don't know much about adhd but i do know that videogames are a good thing, and more proof of that is music to my ears.

i will play videogames until my hands fall off, but then i will learn to use my feet, and when they fall off i guess i'll stop but i reckon i'll be quite old then and probably will have lost my mind too.

» Parents are rubbish

ADHD

Man this is the funniest thing i have ever heard........ I love the way society blames its problems on invisible targets like the videogame industry. Bottom line, defects such as this disorder are probably due to the mum being thick in the first place or smoking and drinking or doing drugs during pregnancy or even before.

Knowing 3 women who have kids with this disorder and knowing their history i can say that maybe if they took care of their bodies they wouldnt have bought more screwed up kids into the world.

Im basically of the opinion that modern day parents are rubbish, they are like kids themsleves and most kids dont have a chance nowdays at a good life because of this

» there is a cure for ADHD

Adhd is caused by the hundreads of chimicals in the amaricain food supy. Just looke at a ingrdent lable of any food in your house if you dont beleive me. Drugs that people buy at stores for sickness's also cause hdh2 and health problems they are axtreamly toxic. Thats y 95% of all adhd people live in amarica peroid. And the people that live out of amarica that it have it because they are in a country that's food suply is suplied by amarica, Also a key thing to stoping adhd is to stop drinking any thing with milk in in the reson is because they pasturize the milk with radiation and flood it with growth hormones witch is very high in triggering adhd. Any one that thinks im fulll of crap i swear im not i have had adhd ever since i was 5 im 16 know. I tried every all those crappy drugs all those false cures nothing worked but then i saw this thing on tv called the natural cures book i bought it and when i received it in a couple of days. I read it and figured out what i needed to do the first day i started onley buying food from a health food store because it said the food dousent have any chimicals then i stoped drinking milk and after doing this for like 5 days i was cured compleatly and never had adhd ever agein it was a dream come true. If any one reads this and has ADHD plz go buy the natural cures book it will help you. and this video game crap is freiken retarded

» ADHD is BS anyway

ADHD is bullsh*t its a false diagnoses to sell pills. Kids need to learn how to concentrate and learn. I dont have ADHD but when something bores me I don't just "zone out" I consentrate and finish what I am doing. They are just lazy. "I have ADHD thats why I can't do my boring homework." No its because you need to just get it done instead of daydreaming. Stop making up *****ing excuses for being a lazy bastard! I am f*cking sick of people being able to get away with being f*ck-offs, be a man and do what needs to be done!

» Oh by the way...

That natural cures book is crap. The only reason it may work is the placibo effect. The guy who wrote it, and is pushing it n those infomercials, is a con man. He has been sued so many times for false claims and various other frauds. He has been pushing scams like that on infomercials since the early '90s. I have never read it, nor will I ever, but I can guess that almost all of the natural "cures" have to do with eating organic foods and not smoking and all this other BS. Yes eating good food PREVENTS a lot of problems but you cant CURE diseases and mental disorders by just eating your veggies.

» already made

This is nothing new, i used to do this a a place. I have mild ADD. They're very simple games and if your brain waves change in a certain way that means your not concentrating any more everything will stop. your just trianing yourself to concentrate.

» don't you morons understand

don't you morons understand...its been clinically proven that everyone, at some point in their life, can be "diagnosed" with ADHD. Its funny how the "symptoms" of an ADHD child is the same as every freakin kid I've ever known. Our minds lose focus, not because of chemicals, but because we allow it. Sure, there are a few cases where brain damage or something is the culprit, but to prescribe pills to every-other case is just rediculous.

*****ty parents are too worried about making money and achieving the "American Dream" to look after their kids. As a result, the 'quick fix' will always be used instead of TLC.

"My child has *****ty grades in school, but because I have 20 board meetings every week and I just can't life without another SUV, I'm going to spend 8 grand on drugs for my kid. That'll keep the pip-sqeak occupied."

ADHD is bull***** because parents today are bull*****.

» guy above me is a moron

sure, i'll agree that ADD is overdiagnosed, i'll also agree that drugs are also over prescibed for it, but every case isn't the cause of *****ty parenting. all of the symptoms are not the same, theres atleast 5 different types, all with different symptoms. It takes me almost twice as long to read, take a test, or do my homework then most other people. I still get good grades, I just that my mind will wonder off and before i know it 10 minutes are waisted. I take eltyrasine pills almost every day. It is an amino acid, they're what make proteins, its not a drug. it helps produce more dopamine, a stimulant for the brain that everyone makes, its just that i dont make enough. On the days that i dont take it, i find that i loose concentration easier. non perscription durgs can also work like caffeene. having an energy drink before homework can really help me concentrate because it is a stimulant. video games also are stimulants. you also think that add is only in kids, theres adult add too.

I'm also an anonymous coward and this is a video game news site.

get over yourself and your self rightous attitude- you're not going to change anybody's mind.

and you're right, I am a moron. I'm so damn stupid it boggles my mind. your skills to decode every asset of my psyche from a single measly post is impressive.

What are you doing here when there is so much evil in the world. Go! Use your power to help man kind!

Oh, and while your at it, buy one of these bicycle helmet doohikies, I'm sure it'll help you "focus" a bit more
