Shanghaiist encouraging PSP piracy in China

PiracyFor purposes of discussion and not to bring China down, it is very hard to deny that the country is a haven for media pirates. They have everything reproduced there, from music CDs, to movies, and even videogames. Now, you could only imagine our amazement when we came across a fellow blog site, Shanghaiist. Obviously, these guys are based there and sadly, they are promoting the practice. One of their article reads,

Our buying decision this holiday season has every bit to do with the PSP. Being a nifty gadget, it does some of the extra resources available to us as residents of Shanghai, or China for that matter: rampant piracy of games. The PSP is no different. Machines for sale here are from either Europe or Japan, but with firmware downgraded/modified so that they can handle backup games.

Pardon the translation but don't pardon the message. We mean, come on. As it is, there have been various reports that the PSP is dying because of various reasons. Regardless if these are true, the point is there's a serious threat to the community. And to publicly encourage stealing wouldn't help one bit.

On a more personal note, the homebrew scene is definitely not piracy. These are hardworking independent people trying to come up with original games and certain modifications. We think that openly telling people to pirate is going over board.

# why the PSP is dying.Guest 2006-12-08 00:39
I say that the psp is dying because Sony has been greedy and is taking away functions with every new firmware upgrade. If sony would allow homebrew and other applications and come up with some good applications themselves to make the psp more user friendly..(ex... notepads - voice recorders- make it more like a small pc) -- then i think a lot more people would go for the psp.

If the PSP is failing, it has everything to with Sony and nothing to do with the users. People will and should use any device any way they want. If the developers frown on this, then they should just stop making the device and quit the business altogether. Users are not stupid mice, companies do not seem to understand this and that is why they will all fall unless they can get in touch with reality!

ex: for a cd?? who would pay that?? wake up already.

ex: i pay all this money for a psp and you are going to fight me tooth and nail all the way against what i want do with it after i buy it? what business is it of yours after i buy it???? forget that isht.

Until recently you had ads on yoru site to download sites offering PSP games... and they were there for aaaages. Dont tell me you dont look at your own front page.

God damn it crawl out of your asses you pathetic idiots. No-one here is dumping teir own cartridges.. ffs 90% of people on here need their hands holding on a simple downgrade never mind ripping their own roms. You know full well you supply emulators to people pirating games and even a halfway intelligent person knows as long as theres homebrew there will be piracy.

Im not saying give up this anti-piracy stance but stop acting like your the tops and do nothign wrong and unkowingly link to download sites for pirated PSP games.

But sadly, there is currently no more games that even worth wasting my bandwidth and msd memory to download and save.

I won't bother with MGS:PO. I don't really like MGS, but I respect the game.

On an off note. How bad do you guys want a PSX Emulator? Haha, it's killin' me waiting for a way to play my PSX games on the go.

Hypothetically speaking...

Say production just stopped for the PSP. No more PSP games, yet there was a working PSX Emulator on the PSP. Would you still be depressed knowing you could still play any PSX game on your PSP? Along with the other media features of course. Let's make it more interesting by saying not only a PSX Emu, but an N64 Emu.

hmm, I also download illegal PC games, and the PC scene isn't dying, so the argument that illegal downloading is killing the PSP isn't really true.

But Sony is actually to small. Look at the PS3. Everybody (??) wants it, but they can't deliver the machines. They promise 400.000 units for the US, but only 190.000 units are sold and you can't buy it anyware. Here in Europe we have to wait till march or april 2007 before we can buy it. That s*cks and downgrades my faith in Sony.

GPS is only available for Japan. That is really stupid. I wait and wait for months but Sony is not capable to manufacture it for Europe or the US. The only thing needed is a translation for the GPS software and new maps.

There is no easy software for converting video to the real resolution of the PSP. Only a lower resolution is possible. Seems like Sony wants to protect there UMD movies this way, but for me it s*cks.

This way I can go on and on. But for me there is only one that is killing the PSP and that is Sony.

# I think people don't understand thingsGuest 2006-12-08 03:33
Sony doesn't make money from selling consoles, they make their money from licensing. So they only make money as long as lots of games are made for the psp, and that only happens if the games sell well. So if you buy your psp and only play homebrew, Sony isn't making a dime. People seem to think that the psp is expensive, but its price doesn't bring revenue to Sony. The only reason the DS can be sold cheaper is because it has way more games and they sell better.

Sony made a stupid move with the PSP and now they're paying for it, like Sega before them.

Anybody here who still plays Dreamcast helped kill it. And I'll bet they don't feel guilty in the least.

Homebrew wins, and I think we may be able to use the usb sony psp addons with our homebrew programs....

I also find it sucks that you need a PS3 just to use the PSP psx emu feature, I realy hope that a full speed psx emu with sound comes out soon

Lumines, Twisted Metal, MGA 1, 2, Daxter, Spyphon Filter, Burnout Legends, X-Men Legends II, Marvel Ulitmate Alliance, GTA LCS, GTA VCS, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, MegaMan first remake, Ghost N Goblins, NFSP carbon, Mortal Kombat Unchained, Tekken DR, Tales of Phantasia, Breath of Fire 3, Killzone liberation, MGS Ops.

Then there are other not so great but still fun to play around with with like the various sport titles. You just need a job instead of waiting hours to download one game you could quickly rent a couple, or buy. Then you'll get a better picture of the overall quality of the PSP library. So far I'm happy with whats out now.

If what you said it is true, that pirate games in China is killing PSP, shouldn't it also kill gamecube, PS2, XBox, XBox360, NDS etc. You cannot blame the failure of a handheld due to the company policy, to an entire nation. It is logically flawed.

I seriously agree with some of above users.. like have a damn firmware thas actually useful with more media support!! I mean this isn't even news... wtf encouraging PIRACY!? I read it more like the person is trying to let know of the gadget... so how is buying their console encouraging piracy??

And another thing.. if it weren't for Pirates, there would be nothing to keep the big companies on top of their toes to let them know what the consumers want... hence the development of GPS and EMU!!!

Fake and ridiculous deeds. You'd better remove it, don't ever fark with Chinese people. We look tender but you never know what we think, we are intelligent people!

By the way, how da fark do you understand Chinese, you'd better not be a Chinese!

are dumb. I do accept that chinese people are generally smarter than us americans but generally as there are exceptions (ex. you). First although China is not the only country who have piracy problems it is still were most electronic piracy occurs in the world. Also I knew that QJ staff are full of hypocrites but they don't have to remove this article if they want and theres nothing you and your reatarded family can do about it. Also there's something known as a translator which can be found on google which you can use to translate, in fact the poster of this article may even know chinese. My native language is spanish but as you can see I speak english correctly like a citizen of the USA. Also chinese are proud of their country but are they proud of the few retarded people they have in their nation like you?

"I speak english correctly like a citizen of the USA." That sounded like you completely abandoned your heritage and tried to type proper English online, like you were white washed....

First of all, I am Chinese, born in Hong Kong, raised in the United States and Singapore, and having also lived recently in Shanghai. Although I too am proud of my ethnicity and my country, Proud Chinese - you strike me as being sarcastic for whatever reason - you shouldn't use that to elevate yourself above others or to put down QJ. Metalspector, listen to Whoa. Regarding the actual topic, having lived in Shanghai at the height of its piracy (the government, under pressure from the WTO, recently took down Xiangyang Market, the biggest one by far), I do not blame China for its rampant piracy, simply because companies are failing to bring legitimate versions of their products to China out of fear of piracy. It's a catch 22.

What is this? There will always be piracy in the media industry no matter what happens. No security protection is incrackable by the brilliant minds of its own users. What makes me mad more is that you guys act so highly of yourselves; this article does not deserve to be news, if you do not like the piracy scene just stick with homebrew. There is no reason for the piracy scene to be bashed by the homebrew scene or discriminated against and vice versa. With this article, are you guys trying to say that China is the one and only country that has mass amounts of piracy in it. If you do believe so, sir I pity your thrown-away life and I believe that you are stereotypical. In the pass months I've seen a huge improvement in quality of articles but WHAT IS THIS? This article deserves to be buried and never to be surfaced because articles like this will just bring down the site's news quality. May no flamers bash me for what I have said. Thank You.

I've been considering QJ to be a wonderful site full of good initiatives and ideas, until I see this idiculous, even stupid, article.

To Ryan A,who posted it: If you feel your lovely PSP is dying or something, dude, go cry and ask for it to you Mama, and that will be more reasonable than just stupidly blame everything on China. Stop making this pure fan's site to be political!! You Politician!!You deserve to be kicked out of QJ, she will be better with guys like you.

And metalspector is a complete, 100%, genuine, Grade-A D.U.M.B-A.S.S !! Not because you spoke foully on somebody's family, it's just I'm a Spanish too, when you are showing off like " I can speak English like an American citizen!!" May I just ask you:"How about your Spanish"? YOU JUST SHAMED OUR LANGUAGE AND OUR COUNTRY!! Why don't you just tell them you are an

American, maybe that will give you a little more pride huh?
