Video games - Image 1The NPD results are out for the month of September, and look at what we have here! A mighty and proud showing of PS3 sales finally taking over the spot beyond the Xbox 360 and the Wii -- for the first time ever. That's not to say that it topped all of the charts, though. A couple hundred thousands more till it successfully topples down the Nintendo DS from its # 1 spot.
  • Nintendo DS: 524,200
  • PlayStation 3: 491,800
  • Wii: 462,800
  • Xbox 360: 352,600
  • PlayStation Portable: 190,400
  • PlayStation 2: 146,000
Obviously, the price cuts and the launch of the PS3 Slim did wonders for Sony's numbers. Let's see how well they sustain this increase, especially as the holiday season nears.

Overall, so far it looks like there's been quite an improvement in the hardware sales numbers after the gaming industry got heavily and consistently beat up by the recession the past year, although this movement is what analysts would describe as only "slight". Still, positive movement is positive movement, so let's not rain on that parade.

As for the top ten software sales, Halo 3: ODST takes in the top spot, with Wii Sports Resort with MotionPlus raking in the next most number of sales for this month.

  1. Halo 3: ODST (Bungie, Microsoft), Xbox 360 - 1.52 million
  2. Wii Sports Resort w/MotionPlus (Nintendo), Wii - 442,900
  3. Madden NFL 10 (EA Tiburon), Xbox 360 - 289,600
  4. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (Alphadream, Nintendo), NDS - 258,100
  5. The Beatles: Rock Band (Harmonix, MTV Games/EA), Xbox 360 - 254,000
  6. Madden NFL 10 (EA Tiburon), PS3 - 246,500
  7. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 - Fusion (Vicarious Visions, Activision), Xbox 360 - 236,000
  8. Batman: Arkham Asylum (Rocksteady, Eidos/Square Enix), PS3 - 212,500
  9. Guitar Hero V (Neversoft, Activision), Xbox 360 - 210,800
  10. The Beatles: Rock Band (Harmonix, MTV Games/EA), Wii - 208,600

Come on PS3!!

You can do it!

Guess all the Halo fanboys already have a 360 which means they wont be buying 360 for halo anymore LOL!

Halo ODST didn't do much as 360 fanboys expected.

October sales will be great too, thanks to Uncharted 2. we might finally see golden times for PS3.

» DS is still doing well!?

I can't believe Nintendo are still able to sell DS, surely the market is fully saturated by now? I guess everyone wants the DSi or reduced price old model. I'm glad PS3 is still doing well, but it's probably to be expected since it had it's price drop and now the winter holiday season is coming up... it's like THE thing to buy this christmas, and so many top games are already out, and coming up.

by mupet0000 - 2009-10-20 03:31
» Just as MS predicted

I heard in last weeks major nelson podcast, they were talking about the slim and the ps3 price cut and they said how its gonna beat the 360 in sales. Price cut = more sales. It's obvious, it isn't anything special. That goes for any console that has a price cut and then sells more.

by Bountyhunter53 - 2009-10-20 04:22
» :D

Its time for the PS3 to SHINE!

Lol that rhymes

well, isn't MS sherlock holmes of the day. clearly everyone could have predicted that. even patcher. But it is still relevant, because now that ps3/360 are on "even playing field" and ps3 sales are up, it proves what everyone is thinking - many gamers did not buy ps3 not because it's inferior to 360, but because it is expensive. Sept actually marks the real battle between ps3/360, although Sony could have done this sooner. But later better than never i guess.

@mupet0000:

Well, what YOU and many others seem to forget, that the Xbox 360 had it's own pricecut, too. Yet it didn't do as much as the SP3 pricecut did.

by Buhumith - 2009-10-20 05:54

The 360 didn't sell as much because everybody has one already

by pholly - 2009-10-20 06:13
» .

Stupid PS3 fanboys, look at the software chart. 5 of the top 10 are xbox 360 games. That's where the money is for these guys not the console sales. Why does it matter to you people which console sells more anyway, none of you get a percentage of the sales and none of you founded/work for any of these companies. And no I"m not a 360/Wii fanboy, I own all the consoles and an iPhone so I have no bias one way or the other I just love great games.

by nightros - 2009-10-20 06:38
» lol

lol, just because you have all consoles doesn't mean you're not biased lol... i have wii + ps3. I will happily admit ps3 is a million times better.

by Tyrant156 - 2009-10-20 06:52
» ...

Don't more people own the Wii, Buhumith? It still sold more than the 360

by ISOHaven - 2009-10-20 06:56
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

You can't saturate a market that caters to all ages. It's impossible.

How many people are on this planet? How many DS's have been sold?

by Tyrant156 - 2009-10-20 06:59
» ....

Well if that's the case then why are you pointing out what the top 5 games are? That really only applies to Nintendo since neither Sony or MS have made a profit off of the PS3 and 360.

by ISOHaven - 2009-10-20 07:00
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Wow, congrats Sony! The fact that, that is such an achievement only further strengthens Nintendo's hold on the market.

Where are all the people who claimed the PS3 Slim would fail because they dropped PS2 BC? Hello???? Where are you little trolls? LOL

Good times!

by Bountyhunter53 - 2009-10-20 07:36
» Hmm...

The X360 fanboy went around giving everyone who gave positive comments towards the PS3, sad faces......Sad times.....

» No Excuses because of Price Drop.

Sure Sony had a price drop which will help sales. But 360 had one a week later and Wii was what. a little less than 2 weeks after that.

ALL 3 Had Price Drops and Sony STILL beat the other 2 consoles. That is pretty impressive.

So MS Fanboys or Wii Fanboys cant say. WELL, they had a price cut thats why their on top. You each had one as well.

by RJ - 2009-10-20 09:35

Hmm, I didn't see anyone at all saying that. Could you provide some links? I don't think I read anyone saying the PS3 slim would fail, I read the Go would fail and so far we've been proved right.

by Csyrah - 2009-10-20 10:04
» @pholly

I hate it when that word "stupid" gets thrown at people, even fanboys. If a console really makes them that happy then more power to them. Ok now I'll try to make sense to you then. 360 was out a year previous to PS3, its generally outsold the PS3 (alot more in the beginning). 360 should have more games sold.

Console sales are more important. Why? narrow it down to this... if 5 people buy one console and 10 people buy a different console, then statistically which console should sell more software for it? the more people buy the PS3 the more software sales will shoot up and catch up with the 360. Simple math. Opinionated comment only

GO PS2!

by f31j - 2009-10-20 12:42
» @ pholly

some people seems to forget that more console sales means more confidence for developers to develop games for the console. and just because you say you're not a fanboy doesnt mean you can't be biased. and you are biased no matter what you say. if you're not biased, you wont have called people who commented here "stupid ps3 fanboys". you don't have to be a fanboy to be happy a console is doing well. Console doing well means better software support in the future, only a fool or ps3 hater will be against such news. and you are 1 of them.

p.s: why does having iphone matter, you can't possibly consider iphone a gaming console at this stage of its "gaming experiment".

by f31j - 2009-10-20 12:47

i bet naughty dog is pretty damn happy about the news. The sept ps3 sales will probably greatly help Uncharted 2 sales.

» I hate the Nintendo DS

I'm not flaming the NDS. I have one and I liked it at 1st, but then I realized that it was dumb and the graphics suck. It's a system for little kids. Cheap system with games that appeal to little kids.

by haru3173 - 2009-10-20 18:04
» sure

The price drop helped the PS3's sales but People also bought a ps3 because its a new model(SLIM). That's the reason xbox360's price cut didn't do so well compared to ps3's price cut.

@ Silver-tiger

lol about "Halo ODST didn't do much as 360 fanboys expected." I don't which is right but I thought ODST sold 2m on day 1. And if not, 1.52m is great considering how ps3 fanboys call this game an "expansion".

http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=5279

Anyways, let's see if Uncharted 2 tops that.

Where are all the people who claimed the PS3 Slim would fail because they dropped PS2 BC?

i dont remember people saying that at all.

BC had nothing to do with it.

its because its ugly, the fat PS3 look heaps better.

BC hasnt been around for ages now, so how can it be a contributing factor

@raggedjimmi

@Aces In The Palm

I personaly argued with mr common douche bag and some others regarding the need and no need for PS2 BC in the slim.

Sony themselves had to jump to attention and explain why they once again failed to return BC to the console.

The winning argument every time... if you want a PS2 so damn bad, then go buy one.

PS3 plus PS2 - $400.

by Csyrah - 2009-10-21 09:04
» ...

omg how can you really argue with what another person has seen that you obviously havnt? wtf is wrong with you people.

"the fat PS3 look heaps better"

- I agree with you, but thats a very personal opinionated comment. Not everybody likes the same things obviously. Features are ALWAYS a contributing factor... do what degree? I dont know, I dont work for Sony... but obviously THAT feature wasn't considered to be enough to bother most buyers so it wasn't included.

@raggedjimmi

are you serious right now? you think iso has some type of superhuman memory? most of us have a hard time remembering all the relevent crap in life, I really dont think he would waste time with the irrelevent things like all the QJ links hes posted/read upon. Let the guy have an opinion without being up his as$ everytime he posts something.

by ISOHaven - 2009-10-21 12:30
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Personaly I like my new slim better then the old.

1. It doesn't collect dust like it's going out of style. That in turn makes it looks better to me because it's not a big dust ball on my entertainment center.

2. It's MUCH MUCH QUIETER!!! This is a major plus. Since my PS3 runs 24/7.

3. The fat PS3 shocked the crap out of me every time I touched it. The slim doesn't.
